  • In this paper, the three-dimensional finite element model is established to investigate the structural dynamic characteristics of rotor blade using a finite element analysis. Six natural frequencies and mode shapes are calculated by computer simulation. The first three flapping modal frequencies, the first two lead-lag modal frequencies, and the first feathering modal frequency are validated through comparison with the modal test results of the fixed rotor blade. The computer simulation results are found in good agreement with experimentally measured natural frequencies. The important results are obtained as follows: (1) Natural frequencies are changed due to the variation of rotational speed and fiber angle of rotor blade, (2) Weak coupling between flapping mode shape and lead-lag mode shape are detected, (3) Centrifugal force has more effect on flapping modal frequency than lead-lag modal frequency.

  • Recently, identification of modal parameters using the response only data has attracted considerable attention particularly where the classic modal testing methods is difficult to conduct. One drawback of the response only data, also known as Operational Modal Analysis (OMA), is that only the unscaled mode shapes can be obtained which restricts the applications of OMA. The Mass change method is a usual way to scale the operational mode shapes. In this article a new method is proposed to optimize the additive mass for scaling of the unscaled mode shapes from OMA for which a priori knowledge of the Finite Element model of structure is required. It is shown that the total error of the scaled mode shapes is minimized using the proposed method. The method is validated using a numerical case study of a beam. Moreover, the experimental results of a clamped-clamped beam demonstrate the applicability of the method.

  • The set of processes performed to determine the dynamic characteristics of the constructed structures is named experimental modal analysis. Using experimental modal analysis and interpreting its results, structural failure can be assessed and then it would be possible to plan for their repair and maintenance. The purpose of the experimental modal analysis is to determine the resonance frequencies, mode shapes and Mode damping for the structure. Diverse methods for determining the shape of the mode by various researchers have been presented. There are pros and cons for each of these methods. This paper presents a method for determining the mode shape of the structures using the response spectrum in the experimental modal analysis. In the first part, the principles of the proposed method are described. Then, to check the accuracy of the results obtained from the proposed method, single and multiple degrees of freedom models were numerically and experimentally investigated.

  • In this study, an output-only modal identification approach is proposed for decentralized wireless sensor nodes used for linear structural systems. The following approaches are implemented to achieve the objective. Firstly, an output-only modal identification method is selected for decentralized wireless sensor networks. Secondly, the effect of time-unsynchronization is assessed with respect to the accuracy of modal identification analysis. Time-unsynchronized signals are analytically examined to quantify uncertainties and their corresponding errors in modal identification results. Thirdly, a modified approach using complex mode shapes is proposed to reduce the unsynchronization-induced errors in modal identification. In the new way, complex mode shapes are extracted from unsynchronized signals to deal both with modal amplitudes and with phase angles. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed approach is evaluated from numerical and experimental tests by comparing with the performance of existing approach using real mode shapes.

  • This paper presents modal contribution method to reduce vehicle vibration. Normal mode analysis is performed to obtain modal vector matrix. The proposed method uses this modal vector matrix to evaluate forced response of an active mode to the applied engine forces and the rotating force due to wheel unbalance mass. Comparing the responses, of the specific active mode with one another, it can be easily done to determine most contributed mode in the interesting frequency band. Then we can find dominant bushes by the strain energy distribution of the mode. Vibration response is decrease with modification of those bushes.

  • In this paper, two possible ways for mode shape expansion are proposed and opened for discussion for future use. The first method minimizes the modal flexibility error between the experimental and analytical mode shapes corresponding to the measured DOFs to find the multiplication matrix which can be treated as the least-squares minimization problem. In the second method, Normalized Modal Difference (NMD) is used to calculate multiplication matrix using the analytical DOFs corresponding to measured DOfs. This matrix is then used to expand the measured mode shape to unmeasured DOFs. A simulated simply supported beam is used to demonstrate the performance of the methods. These methods are then compared with two most promising existing methods namely Kidder dynamic expansion and Modal expansion methods. It is observed that the performance of the modal flexibility method is comparable with existing methods. NMD also have the potential to expand the mode shapes though it is seen more sensitive to the distribution of error between FEM and actual test data.

  • A method, termed as the substructural sensitivity synthesis method, which utilizes the computational merits of the component mode synthesis technique is proposed to calculate design sensitivity of modal parameters of substructurally combined structures. In this method, the sensitivity analysis is combined with component mode synthesis thchnique. thus the degrees of freedom of a combined structure can be dramatically reduced. Free-interface mode method including the residual attachment modes among the component mode synthesis methods is used to calculate the modal sensitivity of the combined structure. For the design sensitivities of modal properties of structure, the Nelson's method, which is exact solving method is used. It is shown that the modal sensitivities of the entire structure can be obtained by synthesizing the substructural modal data, and the sensitivities of the modal data about the design variables of modifiable substructure. Using the proposed method, the final degrees of freedom of entire structure can be remarkably reduced to calculate the modal parameter sensitivities. With a structure composed of beams and plates, as an example, the sensitivities of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors obtained by this proposed method were compared with the exact solutions in terms of accuracy.

  • This paper presents an improved version of the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) for the modal evaluation of structural systems or signals. In this improved HHT, a well-designed bandpass filter is used as preprocessing to separate and determine each mode of the signal for solving the inherent modemixing problem in HHT (i.e., empirical mode decomposition, EMD, associated with the Hilbert transform). A screening process is then applied to remove undesired intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) derived from the EMD of the signal's mode. A "best" IMF is selected in each screening process that utilizes the orthogonalization coefficient between the signal's mode and its IMFs. Through mode-by-mode signal filtering, parameters such as the modal frequency can be evaluated accurately when compared to the theoretical value. Time history of the identified modal frequency is available. Numerical results prove the efficiency of the proposed approach, showing relative errors 1.40%, 2.06%, and 1.46%, respectively, for the test cases of a benchmark structure in the lab, a simulated time-varying structural system, and of a linear superimposed cosine waves.

  • This paper presents systematic study of the experimental application of a free-interfaced component mode synthesis method. In the free-interfaced component mode synthesis method, an error the to truncated higher modes and neglected ineria loadings on a component from the connected component is inherent. Also, it is difficult to directly use experimental modal data in a modal synthesis method which links experimental model to finite-element model because of many inconsistencies between experimentally obtained and analytically obtained modal vectors and missing degrees-of-freedom (DOFs) such as rotational DOFs. In order to solve these problems, three methods, the first one based on attaching auxiliary weights to the connection points, the second one utillizing the normalization of experimental modal vector, and the third one generating smoothed and expanded experimental mode shapes, are studied in this paper. Finally, the study is illustrated for a flat-plate structure by using simulated and measured experimental data.
