During period of the rainy season of spring tide Aug. 2005, the suspended sediment transport rate from Seomjin River increased ten times as high as neap tide of low river discharge. During ebb tide of high terrestrial input, the grain size of suspended particles of both surface and bottom layer of the water column, showed a uni-modal distribution with a dominant peak at coarse fraction, which suggests a characteristic development of floc-sized particles of low mean effective density. On the contrary, the particles supplied toward upstream of Seomjin river from Gwangyang Bay during flood tide showed a bi-modal distribution with a secondary peak at finer fraction, possibly due to the resuspension and the deflocculation associated with the increased shear velocity at near bottom. Break-up of large flocs is also suggested by the increased mean effective density. However, settling velocity was lower during flood tide because of smaller grain size. Thus, net deposition of suspended sediment is expected at within Gwangyang Bay instead of upstream of Seomjin River, even though suspended sediment transport rate at near bottom water was three times higher than that at surface water during flood tide.
In this paper, vibration-based methods to monitor damage in foundation-structure interface of harbor caisson structure are presented. The following approaches are implemented to achieve the objective. Firstly, vibration-based damage monitoring methods utilizing a variety of vibration features are selected for harbor caisson structure. Autoregressive (AR) model for time-series analysis and power spectral density (PSD) for frequency-domain analysis are selected to detect the change in the caisson structure. Also, the changes in modal parameters such as natural frequency and mode shape are examined for damage monitoring in the structure. Secondly, the feasibility of damage monitoring methods is experimentally examined on an un-submerged lab-scaled mono-caisson. Finally, numerical analysis of un-submerged mono-caisson, submerged mono-caisson and un-submerged interlocked multiple-caissons are carried out to examine the effect of boundary-dependent parameters on the damage monitoring of harbor caisson structures.
Vehicle CAE models for NVH predictions are largely developed in two schemes. One is FE models generally used for below 200 Hz problems such as booming noise, and the other is SEA models for high frequencies of more than 1 kHz, representatively related to sound packages. HMC has tried to develop a CAE model for 200-1000 Hz, so-called mid-frequency region, and this paper is one of the corresponding results. The CAE model is developed based on an FE model, and then FE elements at some areas are substituted with SEA elements to reduce DOFs. SEA panels are described by modal density, radiation efficiency, stiffness and damping characteristics that are found from some numerical assessments. Sound packages are modeled similarly as a conventional SEA model. The CAE model developed in this manner, the hybrid model, was compared to experimental results. Predicted pressure and vibrational velo city generally show a good agreement. The developed CAE model and related technology are successfully being used in vehicle development process.
This study evaluates the ratio of Toluene di-isocyanate (TDI) functional group isocyanate (NCO) to the binder functional hydroxyl group (OH) in HTPB/AP/Al-based propellants on their mechanical properties, flow rate, and viscosity to determine the limitations of NCO/OH in the composition of solid propellants. The propellants consisted of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) polyurethane (PU), aluminum (Al) and tri-modal ammonium perchlorate (AP). The tri-modal AP consisted of 30% of coarse AP, 30% of medium AP, and 8% of fine AP. The ratio of NCO/OH varies from 0.73 to 0.85, with two binder percentages of 10.5% and 12%. An increase in NCO/OH ratio with 10.5% binder provided 20%, 95%, and 8 to 9% increments in UTS, modulus, and hardness, respectively. However, the propellant elongation, density, and flow rate decreased by 170%, 0.2%, and 11-12%, respectively. Viscosity increased 20% based on initial hour reading. The 12% binder provides 27%, 47%, and 5~6% an increment of UTS, modulus and hardness respectively. However, the propellant elongation, density, and flow rate decreased by 47%, 0.17% and 27%, respectively. The viscosity increased 30% based on initial hour reading. This study suggests the NCO/OH value of 0.77 and 10.5~11% binder content in propellant based on the mechanical properties, flow rate, and viscosity for better processing and pot life.

In this paper, the structural random response due to the turbulent boundary layer excitation is investigated. Using the mode shapes and natural frequencies of an undamped structural operator, a fully analytical model has been assembled. The auto and cross-spectral densities of kinematic quantities are so determined through exact analytical expansions. In order to reduce the computational costs associated with the needed number of modes, it has been tested an innovative methodology based on a scaling procedure. In fact, by using a reduced spatial domain and defining accordingly an augmented artificial damping, it is possible to get the same energy response with reduced computational costs. The item to be checked was the power spectral density of the displacement response for a flexural simply supported beam; the very simple structure was selected just to highlight the main characteristics of the technique. In principle, it can be applied successfully to any quantity derived from the modal operators. The criterion and the rule of scaling the domain are also presented, investigated and discussed. The obtained results are encouraging and they allow thinking successfully to the definition of procedure that could represent a bridge between modal and energy methods.
Vibration-based Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems use field measurements of operational signals, which are distorted by noise from many sources. Reducing this noise allows a more accurate assessment of the original "clean" signal and improves analysis results. The implementation of a noise reduction methodology for the Modal Distribution Method (MDM) is reported here. The spectral subtraction method is a popular broadband noise reduction technique used in speech signal processing. Its basic principle is to subtract the magnitude of the noise from the total noisy signal in the frequency domain. The underlying assumption of the method is that noise is additive and uncorrelated with the signal. In speech signal processing, noise can be measured when there is no signal. In the MDM, however, the magnitude of the noise profile can be estimated only from the magnitude of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) at higher frequencies than the frequency range of the true signal associated with structural vibrations under the additional assumption of white noise. The implementation of the spectral subtraction method to MDM may decrease the energy of the individual mode. In this work, a modification of the spectral subtraction method is introduced that enables the conservation of the energies of individual modes. The main difference is that any (negative) bars with a height below zero after subtraction are set to the absolute value of their height. Both noise reduction methods are implemented in the MDM, and an application example is presented that demonstrates its effectiveness when used with a signal corrupted by noise.
A railway catenary system which supplies a train with electric power is an important system in determining the maximum speed of an electric train. However, a pantograph could be separated from a contact wire because of reciprocal action between a pantograph with constant upward force and a catenary system. The contact loss of a pantograph-catenary system is mainly affected by the dynamic characteristics of damping and wave propagation velocity of contact wire. For increasing speed of an electrical train, it is necessary to establish the techniques to identify the modal parameter of a catenary system through experiment. However, it is difficult to decouple each mode and to extract respect ive damping rat io since a catenary system has an extremely high modal density. For this reason, mode decoupling process to identify modal parameters is a principal technique in analyzing a catenary system. In this paper, the damping extract ion method for a catenary system using the continuous wavelet transform is discussed.
A non-destructive time domain approach to examine structural damage using parameterized partial differential equations and Galerkin approximation techniques is presented. The time domain analysis for damage detection is independent of modal parameters and analytical models unlike frequency domain methods which generally rely on analytical models. The time history of the vibration response of the structure was used to identify the presence of damage. Damage in a structure causes changes in the physical coefficients of mass density, elastic modulus and damping coefficients. This is a part of our ongoing effort on the general problem of modeling and parameter estimation for internal damping mechanisms in a composite beam. Namely, in detecting damage through time-domain or frequency-domain data from smart sensors, the common damages are changed in modal properties such as natural frequencies, mode shapes, and mode shape curvature. This paper examines the use of beam-like structures with piezoceramic sensors and actuators to perform identification of those physical parameters, and detect the damage. Experimental results are presented from tests on cantilevered composite beams damaged at different locations and different dimensions. It is demonstrated that the method can sense the presence of damage and obtain the position of a damage.
The Yingxian wooden tower in China is currently the tallest wooden tower in the world. It was built in 1056 AD and is 65.86 m high. Field measurements of wind speed and wind-induced response of this tower are conducted. The wind characteristics, including the average wind speed, wind direction, turbulence intensity, gust factor, turbulence integral length scale and velocity spectrum are investigated. The power spectral density and the root-mean-square wind-induced acceleration are analyzed. The structural modal parameters of this tower are identified with two different methods, including the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) combined with the Random Decrement Technique (RDT) and Hilbert transform technique, and the stochastic subspace identification (SSI) method. Results show that strong wind is coming predominantly from the West-South of the tower which is in the same direction as the inclination of the structure. The Von Karman spectrum can describe the spectrum of wind speed well. Wind-induced torsional vibration obviously occurs in this tower. The natural frequencies identified by EMD, RDT and Hilbert Transform are close to those identified by SSI method, but there is obvious difference between the identified damping ratios for the first two modes.
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of steel towers has become a hot research topic. From the literature, it is impractical and impossible to develop a "general" method that can detect all kinds of damages for all types of structures. A practical method should make use of the characteristics of the type of structures and the kind of damages. This paper reports a feasibility study on the use of measured modal parameters for the detection of damaged braces of tower structures following the Bayesian probabilistic approach. A substructure-based structural model-updating scheme, which groups different parts of the target structure systematically and is specially designed for tower structures, is developed to identify the stiffness distributions of the target structure under the undamaged and possibly damaged conditions. By comparing the identified stiffness distributions, the damage locations and the corresponding damage extents can be detected. By following the Bayesian theory, the probability model of the uncertain parameters is derived. The most probable model of the steel tower can be obtained by maximizing the probability density function (PDF) of the model parameters. Experimental case studies were employed to verify the proposed method. The contributions of this paper are not only on the proposal of the substructure-based Bayesian model updating method but also on the verification of the proposed methodology through measured data from a scale model of transmission tower under laboratory conditions.
