Field measurements of various structures have been conducted for many purposes. Measurement data obtained by field measurement is very useful to determine vibration characteristics including dynamic characteristics such as the damping ratio, natural frequency, and mode shape of a structure. In addition, results of field measurements and modal identification can be used for modal updating of FEM analysis, for checking the efficiency of damping devices and so on. This paper shows some examples of field measurements and modal identification for structural health monitoring. As the first example, changes of dynamic characteristics of a 15-story office building in four construction stages from the foundation stage to completion are described. The dynamic characteristics of each construction stage were modeled as accurately as possible by FEM, and the stiffness of the main structural frame was evaluated and the FEM results were compared with measurements performed on non-load-bearing elements. Simple FEM modal updating was also applied. As the next example, full-scale measurements were also carried out on a high-rise chimney, and the efficiency of the tuned mass damper was investigated by using two kinds of modal identification techniques. Good correspondence was shown with vibration characteristics obtained by the 2DOF-RD technique and the Frequency Domain Decomposition method. As the last example, the wind-induced response using RTK-GPS and the feasibility of hybrid use of FEM analysis and RTK-GPS for confirming the integrity of structures during strong typhoons were shown. The member stresses obtained by hybrid use of FEM analysis and RTK-GPS were close to the member stresses measured by strain gauges.

In this work, to identify the dynamic characteristics of disk-spindle system in hard disk drive, experimental modal analysis was performed. And an experimental analysis system including testing apparatus, precision sensors, and analysis software was established in order to perform the testing effectively. From the experimental results, coupled and uncoupled modal characteristics of 3-disk spindle system are clearly identified.
The first Procedure to identify structural system by using measured data is transformation of data to frequency domain and try to recognize modal characteristics in graphical condition. Those methods are doubted about the reliability to the civil structures, especially bridges which has coupled and close modal characteristics. In this paper, feasibility of time domain modal Identification methods were examined and applied double least square method to overcome bias characteristics of the identification methods. To show the advantage of proposed method, simulation were carried out for mass-spring model. And to examine the usage of the method in realistic case, sensitivity of the methods to noise was performed.

Since the fuel is always exposed to turbulent flow, the grid strap shows flow induced vibration characteristics that impact on the nuclear fuel soundness. The dynamic behavior of grids in nuclear fuels is quite complex, since two pairs of spring and dimple support are contacted with rods by friction in the limited space. This paper focuses on investigation of the grid strap(test fuel strap, TFS) vibration in one cell. TFS consists of a single spring and double dimples. To identify the grid strap vibration, modal analysis of the strap is performed using finite element method(FEM). Modal testing on a $5{\times}5$ grid structure without rods is performed. The modal testing results are compared to analytic results. In addition, random test considering rod effect is performed about a $5{\times}5$ grid with rods under real contact condition in the air. Finally, the strap vibration of a $5{\times}5$ fuel bundle in investigation of flow induced vibration(INFINIT) facility is measured in real fluid velocity condition without heating. It is shown that modal frequencies from the test are almost equal to those peak frequencies in the INFINIT test.

The dynamic characteristics of a tennis racket were identified by experimental modal analysis and the sweet spot due to these was calculated. A tennis racket was selected as a model reference and modal parameters of the racket were estimated from the transfer function measured by experiment. The transfer function was reconstructed by the modified modal parameters on the assumption that the racket was locally modified, for example, a change in the material of the frame and the attachment of a damping material to the grip. The change of the dynamic characteristics, especially natural frequency and magnitude of the second and the third vibrational modes, were evaluated from the reconstructed transfer function. The change of the sweet spot due to the modified modal parameters was estimated and visualized through computer graphic simulation by the criterion of the sweet spot measured before structural modification. The modal parameters for improvement of the dynamic characteristics.

In this study the modal characteristics and responses of an asymmetric structure with added viscoelastic dampers were investigated for design parameters such as eccentricity of stiffness and added dampers, the loss factor of the damping materials used. For modal characteristics, variation of the quantities such as natural frequencies, modal damping ratios, modal participation factors, and dynamic amplification factors were observed, and displacements at flexible and stiff edges, and at center of mass were obtained. Based on the results, the problem of the optimum damper distribution to minimize the torsional effects was addressed, and the proposed method for optimum damper distribution was applied to a multi-story structure to verify the applicability Finally the effect of viscous and viscoelastic dampers were compared by varying the loss factor of the viscoelastic material.

In this study, analytical and experimental modal analyses of a scaled bridge model are carried out to extract the dynamic characteristics such as natural frequency, mode shapes and damping ratios. For this purpose, a scaled bridge model is constructed in laboratory conditions. Three dimensional finite element model of the bridge is constituted and dynamic characteristics are determined, analytically. To identify the dynamic characteristics experimentally; Experimental Modal Analyses (ambient and forced vibration tests) are conducted to the bridge model. In the ambient vibration tests, natural excitations are provided and the response of the bridge model is measured. Sensitivity accelerometers are placed to collect signals from the measurements. The signals collected from the tests are processed by Operational Modal Analysis; and the dynamic characteristics of the bridge model are estimated using Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition and Stochastic Subspace Identification methods. In the forced vibration tests, excitation of the bridge model is induced by an impact hammer and the frequency response functions are obtained. From the finite element analyses, a total of 8 natural frequencies are attained between 28.33 and 313.5 Hz. Considering the first eight mode shapes, these modes can be classified into longitudinal, transverse and vertical modes. It is seen that the dynamic characteristics obtained from the ambient and forced vibration tests are close to each other. It can be stated that the both of Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition and Stochastic Subspace Identification methods are very useful to identify the dynamic characteristics of the bridge model. The first eight natural frequencies are obtained from experimental measurements between 25.00-299.5 Hz. In addition, the dynamic characteristics obtained from the finite element analyses have a good correlation with experimental frequencies and mode shapes. The MAC values obtained between 90-100% and 80-100% using experimental results and experimental-analytical results, respectively.
This paper describes the procedure of increasing the efficiency of experimental modal analysis and updating the quality of FE model using the scaled commercial vehicle frame. In this study, it was found that the experimental modal analysis could be more efficient when the measurements were made on the areas with high kinetic energies. Such areas could be located with the aid of FE modal analysis. Also, the number of measurement points could be decided by considering the dynamic characteristics of full FE model. The correlation of FE model and experimental modal analysis was assessed by the differences between the natural frequencies and MAC matrix, which is based on normal modes. These differences of modal parameters were reduced through the sensitivity and optimization analysis of which objective function consisted of the errors of natural frequencies and the diagonal terms of MAC matrix.

In this study, the effect of modal filter error on the vibration control characteristics of flexible structures is analyzed for IMSC(Independent Modal Space Control), and optimal sensor placement in the structural vibration control with consideration of performance of modal filter has been studied. An Lyapunov asymptotic stability condition has been derived, which depends on the magnitude of the modal filter errors. The extent of the response deviation of the closed-loop system is also derived and evaluated using operator techniques. A sensor placement technique has also been suggested to maximize the performance of the modal filter. It has been found by a series of simulation that the suggested sensor placement technique is very effective on the determination of the number and placement of sensors of modal filter in the structural vibration control.

Due to test facility and specialty, it is physically difficult to conduct the modal tests of large-sized structures such as truck, bus and airplane. So, in case of a large-sized truck, the mode analysis on a full vehicle model comprised of reliable cabin, frame, and deck has been generally performed. However, the reliability of overall vibrational characteristics of the analytic model has not been fairly guaranteed by the testified models of each subsystem owing to the existence of cab suspension and the nonlinear mounting between a chassis frame and a special deck system. In this paper, a method to find out the modal characteristics of a large-sized military truck is presented. New modal test equipment is developed to set the boundary conditions of three military truck variants as close as a free-free condition. And the mode analysis method using coupled structure and dynamic models is established to consider the above-mentioned dynamic non-linearities of the vehicle itself. The usefulness of the suggested method is verified by comparing with the modal test results. Finally, the modal parameters of the final variant are extracted using the proved analytic method.
