To predict combustion instability in actual full-scale combustion chamber of rocket engines, air-injection test is proposed with scaling techniques. From the data, damping factors have been obtained as a function of hydraulic parameter and the data give us instability map. Two instability regions are presented and it is found that they coincide reasonably with them from hot-fire test with full-scale flow rates. Accordingly, the proposed approach can be applied cost-effectively to stability rating of jet injectors when mixing of fuel and oxidizer jets is the dominant process in instability triggering.

Effects of chamber configuration on combustion characteristic velocity of full-scale combustion chamber for 30-tonf-class liquid rocket engine were studied. The configurations of combustion chamber are ablative and channel cooling chamber (${\varepsilon}$=3.2) which have detachable mixing head, and single body regenerative cooling chamber which has nozzle expansion ratio of 3.5 and 12, respectively. The combustion chambers have chamber pressure of 53${\sim}$60 bar and propellant mass flow rate of 89 kg/s, and the injectors of all combustion chamber have recess number 1.0 and double-swirl characteristics. The hot firing test results at design point show that the combustion characteristic velocity of the regenerative cooling chamber which has nozzle expansion ratio of 12 is higher than that of other combustion chambers. The reasons for the above result are the increases of combustion pressure and enthalpy of kerosene which is heated due to cooling of the chamber wall before injection into the combustion field.

Design and fabrication of a sub-scale thrust chamber for verification of 7 tonf-class thrust chamber injectors were described in this paper. The 7 tonf-class thrust chamber consists of mixing head with 90 coaxial swirl injectors and regeneratively combustion chamber cooled by kerosene. The coaxial swirl injectors with different pressure drop and recess number were designed for 7 tonf full-scale thrust chamber. By applying the designed injectors to the sub-scale thrust chamber before applying them to the full-scale thrust chamber, the injector performance and functioning were verified. The sub-scale thrust chamber consists of 19 injectors, has chamber pressure of 70 bar, total propellant mass flow rate of 4.3 kg/s, mixture ratio(O/F) of 2.45.
An active ${\mu}$-mixer is important in Bio-MEMS and ${\mu}$-TAS. The mixing state depends on some kinds of factors including the intensity of ultrasonic radiation. We have visualized the mixing state of the mixing chamber with radiation time and presented the influence of the driving voltage in this research. It will be possible to compare the performances of the ultrasonic radiation parts used in the active ${\mu}$-mixer using this method.

The The turbulent mixing characteristics of Kerosene-LOx in a coaxial swirl injector 100 bar have been numerically investigated. Turbulent model is based on large eddy simulation with real-fluid transport and thermodynamics. The effects of equation of state (EOS), chamber pressure are evaluated in a point of the mixing efficiency and pressure fluctuations. The dominant frequency is same as the hairpin vortex shedding frequency generated by film wave at the LOx post.
Micromixer plays an important role in Bio-MEMS or ${\mu}-TAS$. Mixing is generally generated by turbulence and interdiffusion of two fluids. Because of low Reynolds number(Re << 2000) in ${\mu}-channel$, it is difficult to generate turbulence, so mixing mainly depends on interdiffusion. Thus long channel distance is required to mix two different fluids. To reduce the channel length required for mixing, we propose the a new active ${\mu}-mixer$ that two fluids are effectively mixed in ${\mu}-channel$ by the ultrasonic wave which is generated by PZT. The ultrasonic wave is radiated into a chamber in the cross-section directional direction to interface with the two fluids. The two fluids are positioned one on top of the other. Mixing state is measured by the changing of color due to the reaction of NaOH and phenolphtalein.

In this study, the cooling characteristics of combustion gas were investigated by injecting liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) into a liquid rocket combustion chamber, which uses liquid oxygen (Lox) and kerosene as propellants. $LN_2$ injectors and an extended chamber for mixing were installed at the end of the ordinary LRE combustion chamber, and a nozzle was installed after the chamber for mixing. First, an ignition test of the liquid rocket engine was conducted to verify the stable combustion process. Next, a hot firing test was performed step-by-step for safety. Finally, the test was performed for 20 s. The results showed that the combustion gas of the LRE could be successfully cooled by using $LN_2$.
The present study investigates gas residence time and mixing characteristics for various swirl numbers generated by injection of secondary air into a lab-scale cylindrical combustor. Fine dust particles and butane gas were injected into the test chamber to study the gas residence time and mixing characteristics, respectively. The mixing characteristics were evaluated by standard deviation value of trace gas concentration at different measurement points. The measurement points were located 25 mm above the secondary air injection position. The trace gas concentration was detected by a gas analyzer. The gas residence time was estimated by measuring the temporal pressure difference across a filter media where the particles were captured. The swirl number of 20 for secondary air injection angle of 5$^{\circ}$ gave the best condition: long gas residence time and good mixing performance. Numerical calculations were also carried out to study the physical meanings of the experimental results, which showed good agreement with numerical results.
Recently, an excavated soil-recycling machine has been receiving considerable attentions. The mobile type excavated soil-recycling machine is able to improve the soils by adding the additives such as slaked lime and cement at the construction site. However, not only the mechanical factors such as paddle inclination angle and pitch of the paddle but also the physical properties of the excavated soils affect the mixing performance of the excavated soils and additives. In this sense, experimental investigations are uneconomical and ineffective. This paper concerns with the numerical simulator to analyze the mixing behavior of excavated soils and additives in the soil-recycling machine with dual shafts in order to assist the economical and effective design of the optimum soil-recycling machine. By using the simulator, several simulations were carried out, and the effects of some mechanical parameters such as the paddle inclination angle and pitch of the paddle on the mixing performance were made clear.

This study was carried out to investigate the mixing flow of a turbulent cross jet in a cylindrical chamber. A study on the turbulent mixing flow of a cross jet at 45.deg. with respect to each other in the free atmospheric condition was conducted before this study and has given us some fundamental experimental results. Present data have been analyzed and compared with semi-empirical equations for a round and a plane jets. Interests on this kind of cross jets (flows) have been increasing during the past several years for the purpose of the analysis of mixing flows and their applications. In this study, a turbulent cross jet of air in a cylindrical chamber has been conducted and the turbulent characteristics in the mixing region have been analyzed experimentally. The experimental data were discussed by comparing with the semi-empirical equations of Hinze and Gortler. From the experimental curve, the semi-empirical equations of mean velocities and Reynolds stresses have been derived. Three dimensional data acquisitions and the statistical treatments of turbulence characteristics were carried out by on-line computer measurement system connected with the constant temperature type 2-channel hot-wire anemometer system.
