Cytologic Study of Thymoma (흉선종의 세포학적 검색)

  • The fluoroscopy-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy has been gaining widespread acceptance as a rapid and effective method to make a pre-operative diagnosis of mediastinal tumors including thymoma, malignant lymphoma, and metastatic carcinoma. Although thymoma is a most common tumor of the superior mediastinum, most cytopathologists are not experted in cytologic diagnosis of this tumor because of limited experience. In order to define the diagnostic cytologic features of thymoma, we have retrospectively reviewed imprinting smears and corresponding tissue sections from four cases of this tumor. All cases revealed an apparent biphasic pattern of epithelial cell clusters and lymphocytes with occasional branching capillary fronds extending from three dimensional epithelial cell clusters. Epithelial cell clusters predominated in one case and lymphocytes in two cases. Mixed epithelial cell and lymphocyte type represented in one of four cases. In the lymphocyte predominant type, the presence of epithelial cell clusters and small mature lymphocytes are helpful features to differentiate from a malignant lymphoma.

Ceruminous Gland Tumor in a Dog (귀지선 종양 증례 1)

  • A 9-year-old male Yorkshire terrior with recurrent chronic otitis externa and otitis interna was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University. Radiographic findings indicated mineralization around the right ear canal. A tan nodular mats, 1 cm in diameter. was noted near the tympanum after total ear canal ablation. Cytologically. the imprint smear of the cut surface of the mass produced clusters of cells with abundant and weakly basophilic cytoplasm, one small round nucleus and one or two nucleoli, mixed with both degenerate and non degenerate neutrophils. The location of the nuclei was eccentric, and some cells contained somewhat coarse black granules in their cytoplasms, on which the mass was diagnoted as ceruminous gland adenoma or hyperplasia associated with inflammation. Histopathologic examination of the tumor was compatible with a diagnosit of ceruminous gland adenoma. The patient is responding well to sugery and antimicrobial treatment.

A Case of Huge Pleomorphic Adenoma of Hard Palate (경구개에 발생한 거대 다형성 선종 1례)

  • Pleomonhic adenoma, the most common of the benign salivary gland tumor, is called benign mixed tumor. The tumor was first described by Kaltschmied in 1725 and clinically systematized by Bilroth in 1859. Most pleomorphic adenoma arise in major salivary glands. However, their development in minor salivay glands of the oral cavity, pharynx, paranasal sinuses, and in skin and lacrimal glands is well known. The palate is the most common site of origin of pleomorphic adenoma in minor salivary gland. Recently the authors have experienced a case of the huge pleomorphic adenoma of the hard palate in a 70 years old woman. This is the report of a case with review of literature.

Mixed Squamous Cell and Glandular Papilloma of the Lung in a 64-Year-Old Woman

  • Mixed squamous cell and glandular papilloma of the lung is an extremely rare benign epithelial tumor showing a mixture of squamous and glandular epithelium. Here, we report a case of mixed squamous cell and glandular papilloma that presented as a solitary nodule in the left lower lobe of a 64-year-old woman. Chest computed tomography demonstrated a lobulated mass in the basal segment of the left lower lobe. The patient underwent a lobectomy under the suspicion of lung malignancy. The histopathological diagnosis was mixed squamous cell and glandular papilloma.

Granulosa cell tumor in a sow (돼지의 과립막세포 종양)

  • A two-year-old mixed breed sow was requested to the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory of Cheju National University with a clinical signs of severe abdominal pain and sudden death. Grossly, there was severe hemorrhage in abdominal cavity. Most of internal parenchymas and subcutaneous muscle showed severe pale discoloration. Both ovaries were enlarged with oval to round protruding multilobular masses and dark red in color. And they were firm and contained multiple small cysts in their cut surface. Histopathologically, numerous neoplastic granulosa cells had spherical-to-oval, hyperchromatic nuclei and scant eosinophilic cytoplasms were distributed with follicular pattern in ovarian masses. And the typical Call-Exner bodies, distinctive microcavityies, were observed in the center of small neoplastic follicles. Based on the gross and histopathologic findings, this case was diagnosed as granulosa cell tumor. In our best knowledge, this is believed to be the first report of granulosa cell tumor in a sow in Korea.

Basal Cell Adenoma of the Parotid Gland (이하선에 발생한 기저세포선종)

  • The basal cell adenoma of the parotid gland is rare benign disease, first described and adequately documented as a distinctive tumor from benigh mixed tumors(pleomorphic adenoma) by Kleinsasser and Klein in 1967. This tumors is an isomorphic epithelial tumor of salivery gland, characteristic of absence of myoepithelial cells which are present in pleomorphic adenoma and other salivery gland tumors. Clinicopathologically the tumors is very difficult to differentiate with pleomorphic adenoma or adenoid cystic carcinoma. The prognosis is excellent by complete extirpation of the tumor. The present report presents two cases of basal cell adenoma of the parotid gland seen in 63 year old man and 71 year old man in one-year period at Department of Surgery, Yonsei University, College of Medicine.

Carcinoid tumor of gallbladder in a dog (개의 담낭에서 발생한 carcinoid tumor 증례 보고)

  • A 7-year-old female mixed-breed dog was presented to a veterinary clinic for pyometra. During abdominal ultrasonography, an abnormal finding was noted in the gallbladder. A cholecystectomy was performed. Grossly, the gallbladder wall was thickened with a polypoid nodular projection into the lumen. Microscopically, the polyp consisted of a solid sheet of round to polygonal-shaped cells that formed small packets with fibrovascular septa. The neoplastic cells contained abundant cytoplasmic eosinophilic granules. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were positive to chromogranin A and neuron-specific enolase, whereas they were negative to vimentin and cytokeratin. This case was diagnosed as a primary gallbladder carcinoid tumor.

Common plasma protein marker LCAT in aggressive human breast cancer and canine mammary tumor

  • Breast cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers. Although biomarkers are continuously being discovered, few specific markers, rather than classification markers, representing the aggressiveness and invasiveness of breast cancer are known. In this study, we used samples from canine mammary tumors in a comparative approach. We subjected 36 fractions of both canine normal and mammary tumor plasmas to high-performance quantitative proteomics analysis. Among the identified proteins, LCAT was selectively expressed in mixed tumor samples. With further MRM and Western blot validation, we discovered that the LCAT protein is an indicator of aggressive mammary tumors, an advanced stage of cancer, possibly highly metastatic. Interestingly, we also found that LCAT is overexpressed in high-grade and lymph-node-positive breast cancer in silico data. We also demonstrated that LCAT is highly expressed in the sera of advanced-stage human breast cancers within the same classification. In conclusion, we identified a possible common plasma protein biomarker, LCAT, that is highly expressed in aggressive human breast cancer and canine mammary tumor.
