Primaquine Administration after Falciparum Malaria Treatment in Malaria Hypoendemic Areas with High Incidence of Falciparum and Vivax Mixed Infection: Pros and Cons

  • Mixed infections of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax is high (~ 30%) in some malaria hypoendemic areas where the patients present with P. falciparum malaria diagnosed by microscopy. Conventional treatment of P. falciparum with concurrent chloroquine and 14 days of primaquine for all falciparum malaria patients may be useful in areas where mixed falciparum and vivax infections are high and common and also with mild or moderate G6PD deficiency in the population even with or without subpatent vivax mixed infection. It will be possibly cost-effective to reduce subsequent vivax illness if the patients have mixed vivax infection. Further study to prove this hypothesis may be warranted.

  • 집단 약동학 모형 추정의 결과는 환자에게 투약학 약물의 용량결정에 직접적 영향을 미치므로 추정 모형에 대한 타당도와 적합도의 검증이 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 다양한 집단 약동학 모형 적합도 검증을 위한 방법들을 비교, 분석하고 실제 임상자료를 이용하여 최적의 집단 약동학 모형을 찾고 이에 대하여 다양한 타당도, 적합도 검정을 실시하여 모형을 진단해 본다.

  • Vegetatiion structure and population dynamcis of pine needle gall midge were investigated from 1980 to 1982 at the southern part of Palgong mountain near Daegu. The results of investigation at the areas of A (pure stand), B(30% mixed forest) adn C(60% mixed forest) were as follow; Vegeation of 3 areas were not classified by the species diversity, but by the unequal distribution of Alnus hirsuta, Robinia pseudo-acacia, Lespedeza cyrtobotrya, Quercus variabilis and vitality of Pinus densiflora at the area C was low, due to shadow by broad-leaf trees. Soil environmental factors at 3 areas not characteristic, but the average of humus contents showed high significance and the order was A

인삼${\cdot}$당귀 혼합추출물 경구투여가 생쥐 비장세포 및 대식세포의 활성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of the Administration of Mixed Extract of Ginseng Radix and Angelicae gigantis Radix on Activity of Murine Splenocytes and Macrophages)

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate effects of mixed extract of Ginseng Radix and Angelicae gigantis Radix on activity of murine splenocytes and macrophages. GAE (300 mg/kg) was administered p.o. for 7 days. GAE decreased the viability of murine splenocytes in vivo. Also, GAE enhanced the population of $Thy1^+$ cells in splenocytes and the population of splenic $CD4^+$ cells. Furthermore, GAE increased the production of ${\Upsilon}$-interferon from splenocytes. GAE enhanced the production of nitric oxide and the phagocytic activity of peritoneal macrophages. These results suggest that GAE regulates the immune response via activation of splenic Th1 cells and peritoneal macrophages.

미생물 호흡속도에 기초한 혼합배양중의 생균수 측정 (Measurement of Viable Cell Number in Mixed Culture Based on Microbial Respiration Rate)

  • 혼합배양중의 각 미생물의 생균수 측정은 순수배양보다 훨씬 복잡하다. 특히 두 균주의 크기가 비슷한 경우에는 사용할 수 있는 방법이 더 제한된다. 본 연구에서는 두 균의 크기가 비슷한 경우에도 적용될 수 있는 간단한 생균수 측정방법을 개발하였다. 미생물 배양액의 산소흡수속도(OUR)는 세포수에 비례하며 이때의 비례상수인 최대 비산소흡수속도( maximum specific OUR)를 알고 있으면 배양액의 OUR을 측정함으로써 간접적으로 생균수를 구할 수 있게된다. 혼합배양의 경우 산소흡수속도는 각 미생물의 호흡속도의 합이 되며, 각 미생물의 호흡속도가 서로 다르고 또한 온도의존성이 다르다면 호흡속도의 측정을 이용하여 각 생균수를 간접적으로 측정할 수 있다.

Lifetime Risk Assessment of Lung Cancer Incidence for Nonsmokers in Japan Considering the Joint Effect of Radiation and Smoking Based on the Life Span Study of Atomic Bomb Survivors

  • Background: The lifetime risk of lung cancer incidence due to radiation for nonsmokers is overestimated because of the use of the average cancer baseline risk among a mixed population, including smokers. In recent years, the generalized multiplicative (GM)-excess relative risk (ERR) model has been developed in the life span study of atomic bomb survivors to consider the joint effect of radiation and smoking. Based on this background, this paper discusses the issues of radiation risk assessment considering smoking in two parts. Materials and Methods: In Part 1, we proposed a simple method of estimating the baseline risk for nonsmokers using current smoking data. We performed sensitivity analysis on baseline risk estimation to discuss the birth cohort effects. In Part 2, we applied the GM-ERR model for Japanese smokers to calculate lifetime attributable risk (LAR). We also performed a sensitivity analysis using other ERR models (e.g., simple additive (SA)-ERR model). Results and Discussion: In Part 1, the lifetime baseline risk from mixed population including smokers to nonsmokers decreased by 54% (44%-60%) for males and 24% (18%-29%) for females. In Part 2, comparison of LAR between SA- and GM-ERR models showed that if the radiation dose was ≤200 mGy or less, the difference between these ERR models was within the standard deviation of LAR due to the uncertainty of smoking information. Conclusion: The use of mixed population for baseline risk assessment overestimates the risk for lung cancer due to low-dose radiation exposure in Japanese males.

  • 연속측도의 반응변수가 반복측정된 실험 자료의 분석을 위해 흔히 선형혼합모형이 사용된다. 그러나, 잔차의 분포가 이분산성이거나 비정규성을 가질 때 표준적인 선형혼합모형은 적절하지 않은 결과를 가져온다. 잔차의 분포가 두터운 꼬리를 가진 비정규분포를 보이는 타이어 필드시험 데이터를 로버스트 선형혼합모형에 적합시킴으로써 보다 더 정확하고 신뢰할 수 있는 분석결과를 얻을 수 있다. 추가적으로 신뢰성 분석 결과를 제시한다.

  • The estimation of pest density is a prime concern of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) because the success of artificial intervention such as spraying pestcides or natural enemies depends on pest density. Also, the spatial pattern of pest population within plants or plots has been studies in various ways. In this study, we applied generalized linear mixed model to Tetranychus urticae Koch , two-spotted spider mite count in glasshouse grown roses. For this analysis, the subject-specific as well as pupulation-averaged approaches are used.

On the Robustness of Chi-square Test Procedure for a Compounded Multivariate Normal Mean

  • The rebustness of one sample Chi-square test for multivariate normal mean vector is investigated when the multivariate normal population is mixed with another multivariate normal population with differing in the mean vector. Explicit expressions for the level of significance and power of the test are derived. Some numerical results indicate that the Chi-square test procedure is quite robust against slight mixtures of multivariate normal populations differing in location parameters.
