In this paper we propose a mixed-effects least squares support vector regression (LS-SVR) for longitudinal data. We add a random-effect term in the optimization function of LS-SVR to take random effects into LS-SVR for analyzing longitudinal data. We also present the model selection method that employs generalized cross validation function for choosing the hyper-parameters which affect the performance of the mixed-effects LS-SVR. A simulated example is provided to indicate the usefulness of mixed-effect method for analyzing longitudinal data.
Breaks in presence (BIP) are those moments during virtual environment (VE) exposure in which participants become aware of their real world setting and their sense of presence in the VE becomes disrupted. In this study, we investigate participants' experience when they encounter technical anomalies during game play. We induced four technical anomalies and compared the BIP responses of a navigation mode game to that of a combat mode game. In our analysis, we applied a linear mixed model (LMM) and compared the results with those of a conventional regression model. Results indicate that participants felt varied levels of impact and recovery when experiencing the various technical anomalies. The impact of BIPs was clearly affected by the game mode, whereas recovery appears to be independent of game mode. The results obtained using the LMM did not differ significantly from those obtained using the general regression model; however, it was shown that treatment effects could be improved by consideration of random effects in the regression model.
A nonlinear mixed effects model is mainly used to analyze repeated measurement data in various fields. A nonlinear mixed effects model consists of two stages: the first-stage individual-level model considers intra-individual variation and the second-stage population model considers inter-individual variation. The individual-level model, which is the first stage of the nonlinear mixed effects model, estimates the parameters of the nonlinear regression model. It is the same as the general nonlinear regression model, and usually estimates parameters using the least squares estimation method. However, the least squares estimation method may have a problem that the estimated value of the parameters and standard errors become extremely large if the assumed nonlinear function is not explicitly revealed by the data. In this paper, a new estimation method is proposed to solve this problem by introducing the ridge regression method recently proposed in the nonlinear regression model into the first-stage individual-level model of the nonlinear mixed effects model. The performance of the proposed estimator is compared with the performance with the standard estimator through a simulation study. The proposed methodology is also illustrated using quantitative high throughput screening data obtained from the US National Toxicology Program.

Credibility models are actuarial tools to distribute premiums fairly among a heterogeneous group of policyholders. Many existing credibility models can be expressed as special cases of linear mixed effects models. In this paper we propose a nonlinear credibility regression model by reforming the linear mixed effects model through kernel machine. The proposed model can be seen as prediction method applicable in any setting where repeated measures are made for subjects with different risk levels. Experimental results are then presented which indicate the performance of the proposed estimating procedure.

In this paper we deal with the small area estimation for the case that the response variables take binary values. The mixed effects models have been extensively studied for the small area estimation, which treats the spatial effects as random effects. However, when the spatial information of each area is given specifically as coordinates it is popular to use the geographically weighted logistic regression to incorporate the spatial information by assuming that the regression parameters vary spatially across areas. In this paper, relaxing the linearity assumption and propose a geographically weighted kernel logistic regression for estimating small area proportions by using basic principle of kernel machine. Numerical studies have been carried out to compare the performance of proposed method with other methods in estimating small area proportion.

Logistic regression is a well known binary classification method in the field of statistical learning. Mixed-effect regression models are widely used for the analysis of correlated data such as those found in longitudinal studies. We consider kernel extensions with semiparametric fixed effects and parametric random effects for the logistic regression. The estimation is performed through the penalized likelihood method based on kernel trick, and our focus is on the efficient computation and the effective hyperparameter selection. For the selection of optimal hyperparameters, cross-validation techniques are employed. Numerical results are then presented to indicate the performance of the proposed procedure.

Unit level logistic regression model with mixed effects has been used for estimating small area proportions, which treats the spatial effects as random effects and assumes linearity between the logistic link and the covariates. However, when the functional form of the relationship between the logistic link and the covariates is not linear, it may lead to biased estimators of the small area proportions. In this paper, we relax the linearity assumption and propose two types of kernel-based logistic regression models for estimating small area proportions. We also demonstrate the efficiency of our propose models using simulated data and real data.
A generalized linear mixed model is an extension of a generalized linear model that allows random effect as well as provides flexibility in developing a suitable model when observations are correlated or when there are other underlying phenomena that contribute to resulting variability. We describe maximum likelihood estimation methods for logistic regression models that include random effects - the Laplace approximation, Gauss-Hermite quadrature, adaptive Gauss-Hermite quadrature, and pseudo-likelihood. Applications are provided with social science problems by analyzing the effect of mental health and life satisfaction on volunteer activities from Korean welfare panel data; in addition, we observe that the inclusion of random effects in the model leads to improved analyses with more reasonable inferences.
The generalized linear mixed model(GLMM) is widely used in fitting categorical responses of clustered data. In the numerical approximation of likelihood function the normality is assumed for the random effects distribution; subsequently, the commercial statistical packages also routinely fit GLMM under this normality assumption. We may also encounter departures from the distributional assumption on the response variable. It would be interesting to investigate the impact on the estimates of parameters under misspecification of distributions; however, there has been limited researche on these topics. We study the sensitivity or robustness of the maximum likelihood estimators(MLEs) of GLMM for counts data when the true underlying distribution is normal, gamma, exponential, and a mixture of two normal distributions. We also consider the effects on the MLEs when we fit Poisson-normal GLMM whereas the outcomes are generated from the negative binomial distribution with overdispersion. Through a small scale Monte Carlo study we check the empirical coverage probabilities of parameters and biases of MLEs of GLMM.

Quantitative high throughput screening (qHTS) assays are used to assess toxicity for many chemicals in a short period by collectively analyzing them at several concentrations. Data are routinely analyzed using nonlinear regression models; however, we propose a new method to analyze qHTS data using a nonlinear mixed effects model. qHTS data are generated by repeating the same experiment several times for each chemical; therefor, they can be viewed as if they are repeated measures data and hence analyzed using a nonlinear mixed effects model which accounts for both intra- and inter-individual variabilities. Furthermore, we apply a one-step approach incorporating robust estimation methods to estimate fixed effect parameters and the variance-covariance structure since outliers or influential observations are not uncommon in qHTS data. The toxicity of chemicals from a qHTS assay is classified based on the significance of a parameter related to the efficacy of the chemicals using the proposed method. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method in terms of power and false discovery rate using simulation studies comparing with one existing method. The proposed method is illustrated using a dataset obtained from the National Toxicology Program.
