  • Dog meat was begun to be edible by the Chinese, Japanese, the French, Belginan, German Philippines Vietnamese, North-Americans African-Indians Canadian-aborigines Alaskan aborigines including Kor-eans. According to the record, Korea has a long history to have eaten dog meat from the era of Sam-kug(three kingdoms BC 57∼AC 668) and so there are numerous languages proverbs, and customs re-lated to the dog meat. Over the long history there have been many records and recipes about the edib-leness of dog meat. But at present time only the way of cooking such as Bosintang(a soup) Suyuk(a boiled meat) Duruchighi(boiled meat added spice and slightly roasted) Muchim(boiled meat added by spice and mixed) Gaesoju(an extract) Jeongol(boiled meat mixed with spices vegetables and water on the pot) remains. Koreans eat dog meat following the traditional customs n the Boknal(hottest day in summer). Also the areas of Buyo. Sochon, Boryong adn Chongyang of Chungnam province and the ad-jacent areas like Kongju, Iksan, and Nonsan have customs to kill the dog and offer dog meat to the gue-sts in time of small or big occasions such as funeral ceremony Hoigap(anniversary of one's 60th birth-day) and one's birthday. This range of customs is expanding larger and larger. These areas are the cen-ter of past Baekche(BC 57∼AC 660). In spite of this it is unreasonable, and excessive action for foreig-ner to fine fault with the dog meat or Korean food culture.

  • In the year of 1998 the heads of dog raised in Korea were 1,846,411 and the number of the households raising dogs is 819,112 which means that the heads of pet dog and edible dos were 819,112 and 1,027,299, respectively, because each house raised about one pet dog and one edible dog breeder raised hundreds of dog. in 1998 the number of exported dogs came to 28 heads and that of imported dogs was 296 heads. But edible dog that was slaughtered or processed has not been reported to be exported or imported. It is known that at the Shenyang Xingshan Food Ltd in Shenyang, Chinese, 300,000 heads of dogs were rais-ed slaughtered and processed of dog meat per year, and 20% of them were exported. In Korea the cook of dog meat is a special food culture with a long history. During the Chosun dynasty dog meat had been eaten to be cooked diversely such as Gaejangkuk(a soup) Suyuk(a boiled meat) Sundae(a sausage) Kui(a roasted meat) Gaezim(a steamed meat) Nurumi(a meat roasted or fried to which lot of spice paste are added) Gaesoju(an extract) Musulju(a wine) Musuldang(a sweet cane) Now it is cooked as Bosintang(a soup) Suyuk (a boiled meat) Jeongol (boiled meat mixed with spices vegetables and water on the pot) Duruchigi(boiled meat added spice vegatasble and slightly roasted) Muchim(boiled meat added by spice and mixed) Gaesoju(an extract) with the number of recipes lessened compared with those of the old times. The reason is due to the intervention and criticism from foreign countries. But foreigner's blame for the dog meat is absurd and excessive action because Korea raises exceptional dogs which are edible.

  • A 6-year-old spayed female mixed-breed dog presented with noisy respiration and progressive dyspnea. A physical examination and computed tomography revealed an approximately 3-cm ill-marginated laryngeal mass. As there was no metastasis, the mass was surgically removed. Postoperatively, the dog recovered well, and the mass was diagnosed as rhabdomyosarcoma via immunohistochemical staining. At 20 months postoperatively, the dog was healthy without any clinical signs, and radiographs obtained during follow-up did not reveal any abnormalities.

  • In a 10-year old mixed dog, a $10{\times}10{\times}4$ cm mass was palpated around the left caudal thoracic mammary gland with abdomen expension. In hormonal assay, serum concentrate of progesterone was 0 pg/ml and serum concentrate of estradiol was 66.7 pg/ml. Radiological finding of the mammary gland showed higher density than that of soft tissue and ultrasonographic finding showed inhomogeneous in echogenicity. Light microscopic view of mammary gland showed neoplastic hyperplasia of epithelial and myoepithelial cells and showed some metaplastic lesion of these cells to cartilage or bone tissues with metastasis to the lung. This case was diagnosed as malignant mixed mammary tumor.

  • A 10-year-old mixed male dog, weighed 4.2 kg, was referred to an animal hospital in Pusan. Clinical signs were generalized alopecia, cough, cardiac murmur, dehydration, and right side cryptorchidism. Testis was surgically removed, fixed in formalin and submitted to Diagnostic Laboratory, Chonbuk National University. Grossly, right testis was enlarged. A bulging tumor mass of right testis was homogeneous and grayish white in cut surface, but left testis was normal. Microscopically, no border lines of tubules were formed and the cells grew diffusely, forming sheets with scant supporting stroma. Tumor cells were flirty uniform in size and round or polyhedral, and had discrete cellular lines. The nuclei were large and of variable size, and ovoid, round, vesicular but the cell cytoplasm was scanty. Mitotic figures were common. And giant cells and vacuolated histiocytes were scattered, which is called starry sky appearance. This is the case of seminoma with diffuse type in a mixed dog.

  • A 9-years female Pointer with a 5 cm opened mammary mass in the 4th right mam-mary gland was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Chungnam National University. Any abnormal sign was not found in physical examination. But there were leukocytosis, neutrophilia, and monocytosis. Values of RBC, hemoglobin, and hematocrit were low in hematologic examination. Several “cannon-ball” like nodules and pulmonary interstitial pattern were found in the thoracic radiogram. Histopathologically, proliferation of epithelial cells and myoepithelial cells and cartilage tissues were found in the mammary gland mass and infitration of spindle myoepithelial tumor cells was observed in pulmonary nodules. This dog was diagnosed as mammary mixed tumor with Pul- monary metastasis.

  • A white-yellowish 5-7 cm sized solid mass was observed in the mammary gland of a 7 years old poodle bitch. Mass was well-defined and metastasis was not observed. In microscopic findings, mass contained hyperplasia of glandular epithelial cells, proliferation of mucin-secreting myoepithelial cells and their stroma and formation of cartilage and bone. Bone marrow with fat and hematopoietic cells was observed. Based on the microscopic findings, the mass was diagnosed as benign mixed tumor of the mammary gland in dog.

  • Complications of pelvic fractures and sacroiliac joint luxation include hemoabdomen, pulmonary trauma, and soft tissue injury. Among them, rectal perforation accounts for 1% of pelvic fracture complications. Delayed diagnosis is commonly associated with a poor prognosis. A mixed-breed dog was presented to Jeonbuk Animal Medical Center (JAMC) after a traffic accident with no signs of rectal perforation. After fracture surgery, rectal perforation was seen as a perianal fistula. This report describes a case of a perianal fistula progressed from rectal perforation after a traffic accident that was curatively treated with lateral caudal axial pattern flap surgery to the perianal skin.

  • A 5-year-old spayed female mixed-breed dog, previously receiving 7 months of immunosuppressive therapy for pemphigus foliaceus, presented to our referral hospital with a history of dog bites on the right forelimb, chest, and flank 4 days prior to presentation. Physical examination revealed a rectal temperature of 38.6℃; heart rate of 130 beats per minute; panting; systolic blood pressure of 60 mmHg; and swelling, purulent discharge, warmth, pain, and lameness in the right forelimb. The laboratory investigation revealed neutropenia and elevated C-reactive protein levels. Suppurative neutrophilic infiltration with bacterial infection was detected by impression cytology of the pus on the right forelimb. Based on the results of the clinical examinations and laboratory tests, the dog was diagnosed with dog bite-induced sepsis with pemphigus. Meropenem and metronidazole were prescribed. Clinical signs, neutropenia, and C-reactive protein levels markedly improved after 5 days. Subsequently, pemphigus foliaceus relapsed in the dog, and it is currently undergoing re-administration of immunosuppressive medications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of successful management of dog bite-induced sepsis in a dog undergoing long-term immunosuppressive therapy.
