  • Based on the data representing four typical Korean pine forest types, the age structure, DBH distribution, species composition, and forking rule were systemically analyzed for old-growth Korean pine forest in Liangshui Nature Reserve, northeast China. The age structure of Korean pine trees was strongly uneven-aged with one dominated peak following normal distribution, and age of trees varied from 100 to 180 years within a stand. The DBH and height differences in same age class (20 years) varied from 28 cm~64 cm and 5 to 20 m, respectively. Many conifer and hard wood species, such as spruce, fir, costata birch, basswood, oak, and elm, were mixed with dominated trees of Korean pine. The canopy of the old-growth Korean pine forest can be divided into two layers, and differences of mean age and height between Layer I and Layer II were ranged 80~150 years and 7~13 m, respectively. The Weibull function was used to model the diameter distribution and performed well to describe size-class distribution either with a single peak in over-story canopy and inverse J-shape in under-story canopy for old-growth Korean pine stands. The forking height of Korean pine trees ranged from 16m to 24 m (mean 19.4 m) and tree age about 120 to 160 years old. The results will provide a scientific basis to protect and recover the ecosystem of natural old-growth Korean pine and also provide the model in management of Korean pine plantation.

  • Reliability analysis for various forms of data obtained from complicated electronic circuits is a necessary process for guaranteeing reliability of the system. Reliability assessment of a system starts from the estimation of failure function. A system can be composed of one item, but in most cases, several items are correlated to each other in one system. This study suggests an estimation method of failure function and reliabilities for infrequent failure events, by considering different form of data obtained from different systems. Estimates of failure function and reliabilities for complex systems composed of two or more items in parallel or in mixed connections can be done by further application of proposed method.

  • This study directly analyzes the wage distributions rather than indirectly looking at a few of their moments. It also investigates wage distributions using various descriptive and semi-parametric methods. The wage distributions of Korean manufacturing industries can in general be represented by three distinct forms, underdeveloped, advanced and the medium of the two. The discrepancies in these distribution forms are explained by differences in the labor-type distributions and their weights in the composition of wage distribution forms, and further clarified through various descriptive statistics based on them. However, the descriptive statistical analysis has a limit in that it shows mixed outcomes of different categoric variables. Then, this problem is resolved by applying a semi-parametric estimation of hazard function and the marginal effect evaluations of variable changes on estimated distributions not on the function. As a result of this marginal analysis, the common features and differences of categoric variables and their intensities of effects on distributions are revealed.

  • Upgrading of pyrolysis wax oil has been conducted in a continuous fixed bed reactor at $450^{\circ}C$, 1hour, LHSV 3.5/h. The catalytic degradation using HZSM-5 catalyst are compared with the thermal degradation and also was studied with a function of experimental variables. The raw pyrolysis wax oil shows relatively high boiling point distribution ranging from around $300^{\circ}C$ to $550^{\circ}C$, which has considerably higher boiling point distribution than that of commercial diesel. The product characteristic from thermal degradation shows a similar trend with that of raw pyrolysis wax oil. This means the thermal degradation of pyrolysis wax oil at high degradation temperature is not sufficiently occurred. On the other hand, the catalytic degradation using HZSM-5 catalyst relative to the thermal degradation shows the high conversion of pyrolysis wax oil to light hydrocarbons. This liquid product shows high gasoline range fraction as around 90% fraction and considerably high aromatic fraction in liquid product. Also, in the catalytic degradation the experimental variable such as catalyst amount and reaction temperature was studied.

  • Passive wireless devices have increasing civilian and military applications, especially in the scenario with wearable devices and Internet of Things. In this paper, we study indoor localization of a target equipped with radio-frequency identification (RFID) device in ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless networks. With known room layout, deterministic multipath components, including the line-of-sight (LOS) signal and the reflected signals via multipath propagation, are employed to locate the target with one transmitter and a single inaccurate receiver. A factor graph corresponding to the joint posterior position distribution of target and receiver is constructed. However, due to the mixed distribution in the factor node of likelihood function, the expressions of messages are intractable by directly applying belief propagation on factor graph. To this end, we approximate the messages by Gaussian distribution via minimizing the Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD) between them. Accordingly, a parametric message passing algorithm for indoor passive localization is derived, in which only the means and variances of Gaussian distributions have to be updated. Performance of the proposed algorithm and the impact of critical parameters are evaluated by Monte Carlo simulations, which demonstrate the superior performance in localization accuracy and the robustness to the statistics of multipath channels.

  • The degradation phenomenon caused by noises significantly corrupts digitalized data. Therefore, a variety of methods to preserve the edge component of signals and remove noise simultaneously have been used in time domain and frequency domain. In this paper, we have proposed a new noise reduction algorithm using wavelet approximation coefficients to reduce the mixed noise overlapping the signal. The proposed algorithm adopts the distribution characteristics of the error function which is obtained by accumulating the wavelet approximation coefficients, in order to improve the capability to separate edges of the signal and noises.

  • In a functionally graded materials(FGM), two constituent material particles are mixed up according to a specific volume fraction distribution so that its thermoelastic behavior is definitely characterized by such a material composition distribution. Therefore, the designer should determine the most suitable volume fraction distribution in order to design a FGM that optimally meets the desired performance against the given constraints. In this paper, we address a numerical optimization procedure, with employing interior penalty function method(IPFM) and FDM, for optimizing 2D volume fractions of heat-resisting FGMs composed of metal and ceramic. We discretize a FGM domain into finite number of homogenized rectangular cells of single design variable in order for the optimization efficiency. However, after the optimization process, we interpolate the discontinuous volume fraction with globally continuous bilinear function in order to enforce the continuity of volume fraction distributions.

  • Most textbooks of urban geography explain that land value drops down with distance from the Peak Land Value Intersection of urban center. However, There is little rigorous empirical work supporting this belief. Using the publicly notified individual land price data of 2013, this paper examines the structure of land value in urban center with a focus on spatial distribution of land value by land use. As an analytic result, the structure of land price varies between land uses, significantly being different from the classical model of land value in urban space. In residential lands and mixed-use lands for residence and commerce, land price gradient as a function of distance from PLVI is positive and a crater phenomenon even is identified in spatial distribution of land value. The classical model coincides only with land for commerce and office. Nonetheless, predict of land uses by land value function fairly corresponds to Alonso's model.

  • Nickel powders were synthesized by the hydrazine reduction of nickel chloride solution containing ammonia in DEA solutions. The size distribution of nickel powders were investigated as a function of ammonia concentration, hydrazine concentration and the mixed composition ratio of diethanolammine (DEA) and triethanolammine (TEA). Nickel powders with the size in submicron range were obtained at $185^{\circ}C$ for 45 minutes by hydrazine reduction of nickel chloride solution in DEA solutions. The hydrazine concentrations showed significant effects on the particle size and shape distribution of nickel powders under $NH_3/Ni^{2+}$ molar ratio of 2.0 condition. As the mixed volume ratio of TEA and DEA increased, nickel powders with relatively larger particle size and low agglomeration were obtained. Nickel powders with particle size in the ranged from 0.4 to $0.9\;{\mu}m$ were obtained at the 50 $vol.%$ of TEA.

  • This paper formulates resource allocation for decode-and-forward (DF) relay assisted multi-cell orthogonal frequency division multiple (OFDM) networks as an optimization problem taking into account of inter-cell interference and users fairness. To maximize the transmit rate of system we propose a joint interference coordination, subcarrier and power allocation algorithm. To reduce the complexity, this semi-distributed algorithm divides the primal optimization into three sub-optimization problems, which transforms the mixed binary nonlinear programming problem (BNLP) into standard convex optimization problems. The first layer optimization problem is used to get the optimal subcarrier distribution index. The second is to solve the problem that how to allocate power optimally in a certain subcarrier distribution order. Based on the concept of equivalent channel gain (ECG) we transform the max-min function into standard closed expression. Subsequently, with the aid of dual decomposition, water-filling theorem and iterative power allocation algorithm the optimal solution of the original problem can be got with acceptable complexity. The third sub-problem considers dynamic co-channel interference caused by adjacent cells and redistributes resources to achieve the goal of maximizing system throughput. Finally, simulation results are provided to corroborate the proposed algorithm.
