  • The mixed width-integrals of convex bodies are defined by E. Lutwak. In this paper, the mixed brightness-integrals of convex bodies are defined. An inequality is established for the mixed brightness-integrals analogous to the Fenchel-Aleksandrov inequality for the mixed volumes. An isoperimetric inequality (involving the mixed brightness-integrals) is presented which generalizes an inequality recently obtained by Chakerian and Heil. Strengthened version of this general inequality is obtained by introducing indexed mixed brightness-integrals.

  • In this paper, to discover the brightness improvement of ZnS:Cu powder electroluminescence (EL), a new structure is proposed in which phosphor and dielectric are mixed between electrodes. Dielectric and phosphor material are BaTiO$_3$ and ZnS:Cu, respectively. The effect of the mixed layer on EL sample is considered the improvement of source efficiency. Although the number of electrons introduced into the phosphor increases only modestly, the high electric field region of phosphor grains increases comparatively in the characteristics of brightness-voltage. Furthermore, the relaxation occurs through leading and trailing edge pairs, which is relatively efficient in characteristics of decay time. With these results, we found that the brightness of newly proposed ZnS:Cu powder electroluminescence was 167.24 cd/$m^2$ at ac voltage of 100V and frequency of 400Hz.

  • Theoretical models of radiative transfer are developed to simulate the 85 GHz brightness temperature (T85) observed by the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) radiometer as a function of rain rate. These simulations are performed separately over regions of the convective and stratiform rain. TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR) observations are utilized to construct vertical profiles of hydrometeors in the regions. For a given rain rate, the extinction in 85 GHz due to hydrometeors above the freezing level is found to be relatively weak in the convective regions compared to that in the stratiform. The hydrometeor profile above the freezing level responsible for the weak extinction in convective regions is inferred from theoretical considerations to contain two layers: 1) a mixed (or mixed-phase) layer of 2 km thickness with mixed-phase particles, liquid drops and graupel above the freezing level, and 2) a layer of graupel extending from the top of the mixed layer to the cloud top. Strong extinction in the stratiform regions is inferred to result from slowly-falling, low-density ice aggregates (snow) above the freezing level. These theoretical results are consistent with the T85 measured by TMI, and with the rain rate deduced from PR for the convective and stratiform rain regions. On the basis of this study, the accuracy of the rain rate sensed by TMI is inferred to depend critically on the specification of the convective or stratiform nature of the rain.

  • Traditionally, Hanji had been made only with the bast fiber of paper mulberry (Broussonetia kazinoki). Nowadays, Hanji has been made mainly in the mixed forms of paper mulberry bast fiber and waste paper, and consequently it has raised many problems using them. This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of Hanji mixed with paper mulberry bast part and whole stalk pulps. Hanjis made from the solfomethylated pulp were shown higher brightness and sheet strengths than those from alkali and alkali-hydrogen peroxide pulps. The brightness of solfomethylated pulp was found to be high enough not to need additional bleaching. The sheet formations were improved as the increase of whole stalk pulp contents, while the sheet strengths were decreased. In the physical properties of the Hanji mixed with bast part and whole stalk pulps, the handsheet strengths were decreased as the increase of the whole stalk pulp contents. The tensile strength and folding endurance of the Hanji containing 40∼60% of whole stalk pulps were higher as compared to the others.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the feasibility of using deinked pulp of white ledger(DIP) for the manufacture of high quality premium tissue. The three types of tissues were prepared using the softener treated bleached DIP, softener treated mixed pulp of unbleached DIP and virgin pulp, and untreated mixed pulp of bleached DIP and virgin pulp, respectively, and their tensile index. softness, and brightness were measured and compared. The bulk and surface softness increased only slightly by the addition of softener(0.2% mineral oil) into the bleached DIP. The tensile index was decreased by 15∼30%, and the brightness was the range of 86% to 87% ISO. The softener(0.2∼0.8% mineral oil or dialkyl imidazoline) treatment of mixed pulp of unbleached DIP and virgin pulp Improved the bulk and surface of tissue considerably. However, the brightness was low as 85% ISO or below. Although the softness of the tissue made from bleached DIP blended with virgin pulp was the lowest among three types of tissues evaluated, its tensile index was the highest and brightness was 87∼88% ISO. Based on the results, it may be predicted that the bleached DIP blended with virgin pulp is the best raw material for the manufacture of high quality premium tissue if softener treatment is applied to mixed pulp, because the softness can be improved by the addition of softener. In general, the softness of tissue was improved with the increase in the amount of softener: However, the tensile index inversely proportional to the amount of softener added. Dialkyl imidazoline was more effective than mineral oil with respect to the improvement in softness, even though the loss in tensile index was severe with the treatment of dialkyl imidazoline.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the papermaking characteristics of paper mulberry(Broussonetia kazinoki) for new Korean traditional paper(Hanji). Hanji has been traditionally made only with the bast fiber of paper mulberry. Besides mulberry bast part, wood core was utilized separately or in mixed forms as raw materials for the new Hanji. Hanjis made from the solfomethylated pulp were shown higher brightness and sheet strengths than those from alkali and alkali-hydrogen peroxide pulps. The brightness of solfomethylated pulp was found to be high enough not to need additional bleaching. In the physical properties of the Hanjis mixed with bast part and wood core pulps, the handsheet strengths were decreased as the increase of the wood core pulp contents. But the sheet strengths of Hanjis containing 10∼30% of wood core pulps were higher than those of the Hanji containing bast part pulp only. The sheet formations were improved as the increase of wood core pulp contents, while the sheet strengths were decreased.

  • In this study,$ 5{\times}5$ dot-matrix display was implemented with powder electroluminescent device (PELD). Generally PELD which have a luminance from powder phosphor with electric field, inserted phosphor and dielectric layer between electrodes is basic structure. To make high brightness PELD compared to conventional device, new type of PELD was proposed as follows. New PELD had only one layer, which was mixed phosphor (ZnS:Cu) and dielectric (BaTiO3) material appropriately between electrodes. To compare and estimate the conventional and new type of PELD, the EL spectrum, transferred charge density, brightness and decay time was measured. As above result, we fabricated a hish brightness $ 5{\times}5$ dot-matrix display with new type of PELD. Its brightness was 6400 $cd/m^2$ at 200 V, 400Hz.

  • This experiment was mainly performed with a biological treatment of laser printed paper using enzyme, We got the following conclusions : In the case of nonionic surfactant treatment, brightness, residual ink contents and several strength properties of deinked paper were excellent at the low dosage of cellulase 0.05%. When mixed cellulase and xylanase was used, yield was increased as the dosage increased up to 0.2%, but brightness was decreased at the same condition. In contrast, deinking efficiency of anionic type was reduced in terms of brightness, residual ink contents, and tensile strength. As flotation time was increased, yield decreased and brightness increased slightly. On the other hand, the addition of surfactant during repulping process showed better result than that during flotation process.

  • Xylan in hemicellulose has been reported as one of the reasons of the yellowing of chemical pulp and paper. But little relevant information is available in literature. In this study, we examined into the influence that glucuronoxylan or glucomannan and metallic ion($Cu^{2+},\;Fe^{2+},\;Fe^{3+},\;Mn^{2+}$) residued in pulp get each or when mixed at yellowing. Filter paper was treated with each metallic ion, glucuronoxylan and the mixture of glucuronoxylan and metal ions, and brightness and CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ was measured after accelerated aging. As the results of measurements, the filter paper processed by 10% glucuronoxylan was dropped $2{\sim}3%$ on the brightness after accelerated aging for 24 hours. Also, the filter paper treated with glucuronoxylan and $Fe^{2+}$ was dropped 7% on the brightness.

  • This study was performed to investigate the deinkability of Korean old newspaper(KONP) and the properties of newsprint made from deinked pulp with some addition of virgin pulp. When the samples of composed of 50% Australian old magazine(AuOMG) and 50% KONP were compared with the samples 50% AuOMG and 50% AuONP, the yield, opacity, strength properties of the former were high, but its brightness was low. When the mixing ratio of AuOMG : AuONP : KONP was 30:20:50, the brightness and strength properties were obtained the similar or better than those obtained samples having other mixing ratio. The brightness and opacity of samples made from deinked pulp with the some addition of TMP and BKP can meet the minium qualifications of brightness and opacity specified by Japanese Industrial Standard. The samples, which DIP, TMP, and KP were mixed with the ratio of the 85:10:5 and 90:5:5, maintained higher brightness and strength comparing to the samples containing higher amount of virgin pulp. Since the newsprint samples made from KONP was not inferior to those from imported old newspaper, the more use of KONP in producing newsprint is recommended.
