Mission Operations of the KOMPSAT-1 satellite

  • The KOMPSAT-1(Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-1) is the first multi-purpose satellite funded by Korean government for the purpose of remote sensing and scientific data gathering in KOREA. It has successfully achieved its own mission since Dec. 21, 1999. This paper provides an overview of the KOMPSAT-1 missions and addresses the nominal mission planning and operation flow. This paper also describes the routine operational orbit determination and orbit prediction process using GPS navigation solution data. Meanwhile, some problems due to inexperience of the multiple mission operations during LEOP(Launch & Early Orbit Phase) and early normal mission were investigated.   • KOMPSAT-2 will carry MSC(Multi-Spectral Camera) which provides 1m resolution panchromatic and 4m resolution multi-spectral images at the altitude of 685km sun-synchronous mission orbit. The mission operation of KOMSPAT-2 is to provide the earth observation using MSC with nadir pointing. KOMPSAT-2 will also have the capability of roll/pitch tilt maneuver using reaction wheel of satellite as required. In order to protect MSC from thermal distortion as well as direct sunlight, MSC shall be operated within the constraint of sun incidence angle. It is expected that the sunlight will not violate the constraint of sun incidence angle for normal mission operations without roll/pitch maneuver. However, during roll/pitch tilt operations, optical module of MSC may be damaged by the sunlight. This study analyzed sun incidence angle of payload using KOMPSAT-2 AOCS (Attitude and Orbit Control Subsystem) Design and Performance Analysis Soft ware for KOMPSAT-2 normal mission operations.

A Comparison of Scheduling Optimization Algorithm for the Efficient Satellite Mission Scheduling Operation (효율적인 위성 임무 스케줄링 운영을 위한 스케줄링 최적화 알고리즘 비교 연구)

  • A comparison of two kinds of scheduling optimization algorithms is presented in this paper. As satellite control and operation techniques have been developed, satellite missions became more complicated and overall quantity of missions also increased. These changes require more specific consideration and a huge amount of computation for the satellite mission scheduling. Therefore, it is a good strategy to make a scheduling optimization algorithm for the efficient satellite mission scheduling operation. In this paper, two kinds of scheduling optimization algorithms are designed with tabu-search algorithm and genetic algorithm respectively. These algorithms are applied for the same mission scenario and the results of each algorithm are compared and analyzed.

BRIEF REPORTS ON KAISTSAT-4 MISSION ANALYSIS

  • Five scientific instruments are planned on KAISTSAT-4 that is scheduled to be launched in 2002. A far ultra-violet imaging spectrograph and a set of space plasma instruments are currently being designed. The imaging spectrograph will make observations of astronomical objects and Earth's upper atmosphere. The plasma instrumentation is capable of fast measuring the thermal magnetosphere plasmas, cold ionospheric plasmas and the Earth's magnetic fields. Major system drivers and constraints on the payloads as well as the spacecraft are identified. A preliminary analysis of the K-4 mission has been undertaken with the system requirements that are derived from the system drivers. Detailed investigation shows that Sun-synchronous orbits with approximate altitudes of 800km are optimal to satisfy the identified requirements. Comparisons with other orbits of different inclinations are also shown. Four operation modes and a daily schedule of spacecraft maneuver are found from the Sun-synchronous orbital model. It is shown that the scientific objectives of K-4 can be achieved with moderate levels of design and operation risks.

  • The LEO satellite generates the power during day and consumes the power during night, so the power changes repeatedly. The power fluctuation must be verified, because it affects the mission operation and lifetime of satellite. This study describes the test-set for verification of Electrical Power Subsystem and two verification items using it. The verification test of EPS will be useful to predict the mission lifetime and to decide the mission operation of satellite.

  • he purpose of this study is to measure bio-signal to investigate the driver's physiological response change under real situation using train simulator. The train simulator used in this study is KTX model and according to changes of driving situation, The bio-signal controlled by autonomic nervous system, such as GSR(Galvanic Skin Response), SpO2(Saturation percent O2), HR(Heart Rate), ECG(Electrocardiograph), EEG(Electroencephagram) and movement and response of eye were measured. Statistically significant difference in bio-signal data and eye movement activity pattern were investigated under several different driving speeds using analysis of variance (p<0.05). The GSR and HR value measured in average and mission speed operation is higher than in high-speed operation. β wave of EEG in average speed operation become more activated than in high speed operation. In accordance with a characteristic of rail vehicle, movement and response of eye in high-speed operation requiring relatively simple maneuver become less activated than in either average or mission speed operations. Conclusively, due to more careful driving controls in average and mission speed operation are required than in high-speed operation, level of mental and physical stresses of train driver was increased and observed through changes of bio-signal and eye movement measured in this study.

  • The International Space Station (ISS) offers research opportunities to researchers through crew's space mission in the field of remote sensing. ISS provides the facilities to place and operate experiment equipments in a variety of fields, especially, microgravity experiments and Earth observations. This paper is intended to give readers a brief introduction to the ISS utilization and the capabilities for remote sensing researches. We investigate what kind of crew missions and payloads should be developed for remote sensing researches on the ISS.

  • In this paper, a total operating environment equipped with onboard wireless communication systems and ground-based mission control systems is proposed for simultaneous operation of multiple UAVs. A variety of operating structures are studied and classified systematically based on types and usages of the components. For each operating system, the strength, weakness and reliability aspects are investigated. Based on these results, a proper operating system configuration is determined and components are developed for mission formation flight. Proposed system can make a formation flight of various UAVs, execute complex missions decentralizing mission to several UAVs and cooperate several missions.

  • COMS will receive two different meteorological signals in S-Band from IDACS (Image Data Acquisition and Control System) in ground station before transmitting them in L-Band to user station. MODCS (Meteorological Ocean Data Communication Subsystem) in satellite released the value of required PFD (Power Flux Density) to receive two signals. Thus, DATS (Data Acquisition and Transmission Subsystem) needs to send two signals to satellite with a satisfied EIRP. The value of minimum HPA (High Power Amplifier) output power was estimated by subtracting antenna directional gain and path loss between antenna and HPA from the needed EIRP in this paper. Besides the minimum output power of HPA, the maximum output power was also calculated with considering IMD (Inter-Modulation Distortion) characteristics. IMD is always occurred in the output of HPA when LRIT and HRIT are amplified by using single HPA as COMS application. In this paper, the setting of maximum output power was determined when the IMD of modelled HPA was corresponded to the requirement of MODCS.

  • In this report, a specialization plan for wearable robots by mission profile was investigated and analyzed to derive an application plan. The final goal of this study was to derive the operating requirements of wearable robots according to specialized plans, and to conduct a specialized study on wearable robots by mission profile through investigation/analysis of specialized plans for each mission profile. In the study, 1) Research on technology trends related to military wearable robots such as patents and papers, 2) Research/analysis of mission profiles to characterize wearable robots, 3) Analysis of wearable robot specialization plans according to mission profiles, and 4) Requirements for wearable robot operation were derived. In the first time of the study, a survey on technology trends related to wearable robots for soldiers such as patents and papers was completed, and a military consultative body was conducted to derive measures to characterize wearable robots. In addition, a survey was conducted on mission profiles, and the second time study derived Key Performance Parameters (KPP) for operational performance, core performance, and system performance based on scenarios by mission profile. However, it is revealed that the KPP derived from the research results was not covered in this paper because it was judged that more in-depth research was needed prior to disclosure. In order to prepare for future battlefield situations and increase the usability of wearable robots, this study was conducted to characterize wearable robots by considering the characteristics of soldiers' equipment according to mission profiles and to characterize wearable robots by mission profile.
