  • An off-axis integral floating system using a concave mirror is analyzed to resolve the image distortion incurred by the off-axis optical arrangement. The concave mirror can be adopted as the floating device to improve the optical efficiency. The image distortion due to the tilting axis of the concave mirror needs to be analyzed precisely to generate the pre-distortion image. In this paper, we calculate the image deformation in the off-axis structure of the concave mirror using the geometrical optics. Using the calculation results, the compensated elemental image can be generated for the pre-distortion integrated image, which can be projected to the floating 3D image without image distortion. The basic experiments of the off-axis integral floating are presented to prove and verify the proposal.

  • Wafer scale micro mirror array with high surface quality for small form factor (SFF) optical pick-up was fabricated by micro UV-molding. To replicate micro mirror array for SFF optical pick-up, a high- precision mold was fabricated using micro-machining technology. Wafer scale micro mirror array was UV-molded using the mold and then the process was optimized experimentally. The surface flatness and roughness of UV-molded micro mirror array were measured by white light scanning interferomety system and analyzed the transcribing characteristics. Finally, the measured flatness of UV-molded micro mirror away for SFF optical pick-up, which was fabricated in the optimum processing condition, was less than 70nm.

  • Optical disk drives read information by replacing a laser beam on the disk track. As information has become larger, the more accurate position control of a laser beam is necessary. In this paper, we report the analysis and fabrication of the micro mirror for optical disk drivers. A coupled simulation of gas flow and structural displacement of the micro mirror using the Finite-Element-Method is applied to this. The mirror was fabricated by using MEMS technology. Especially, the process using the lapping and polishing step after the bonding of the mirror and electrode plates was employed for the Process reliability. The mirror size was 2.5mm${\times}$3mm and it needed about 35V for displacement of 3.2 ${\mu}$.

  • For the Space-borne optical imaging payload system design, light weighting and moderate stiffness of mirror and/or mirror fixation device is very important aspects. The front surface of mirror is regulated by optical performance requirement, but the shape of backplate of mirror is to be optimised while satisfing the required stiffness and weight. According to the results, the best shape of backplate cell is triangular. And also related geometric dimensions and the optimised mounting point of MFD(Mirror Fixation Device) is presented. Finally, natural frequencies and shpaes of mirror structure are analysed.

  • Active sunlighting systems have been applied to deliver sunlight into the indoor space where natural light is insufficient, mainly because of the congested high-rise buildings in urban areas. Among various active sunlighting systems, a mirror sunlighting system which is simple structure and economically reasonable has been widely used in different types of spaces such as underground, north facing place and atrium. This study was to evaluate the mirror sunlighting systems, which were consisted of the first mirror of $3.5m{\times}2.5m$, the eight sets of the second mirrors of $1.0m{\times}1.25m$ and a sun tracker. Ten sets of the systems were installed for 40 apartment living rooms, the configuration of $3.5m(W){\times}4.0m(D){\times}2.5m(H)$ where sunlighting were not possible due to high retaining walls located in the front of the living rooms. The 45 HOBO data logger sensors for the indoor illuminance were equipped and 2 Li-cor photometers for outdoor illuminance. Both indoor and outdoor horizontal illuminances were monitored every second from 9am to 3pm on 17 January 2010 under clear sky condition. The results showed that the indoor illuminance of installed mirror sunlighting system was significant relationship with outdoor illuminance and increased the indoor illuminance level by 4.2 times on the whole floor space, by 8 times on the sun patch space of 6m2 and even by 2 times on the no sun patch space. In addition, the luminous conditions of the living room under real sky conditions met the KS recommendation for difficult task (600-1000-1500 lux) such as sewing and reading on whole floor space and sun patch space. It was proved that the benefits of mirror sunlighting systems included an effective technology for penetrating daylight into indoors where sunlighting was not possible and improving occupants' satisfaction and health, and contributing to energy saving in apartments during daytime.

  • In this paper, the structural-thermal-optical performance analysis of the mirror was performed by setting the laser heat source as the boundary condition of the thermal analysis. For the laser heat source model, the Beer-Lambert model considering semi-transparent optical material based on Gaussian beam was selected as the boundary condition, and the mechanical part was not considered, to analyze the performance of only the mirror. As a result of the thermal analysis, thermal stress and thermal deformation data due to temperature change on the surface of the mirror were obtained. The displacement data of the surface due to thermal deformation was fitted to a Zernike polynomial to calculate the optical performance, through which the performance of the mirror when a high-energy laser was incident on the mirror could be predicted.

  • In order to contain as much information as possible in a single image, a wide FOV(Field-Of-View) imaging system is required. The catadioptric imaging system with hyperbolic cylinder mirror can acquire over 180 degree horizontal FOV realtime panorama image by using a conventional camera. Because the hyperbolic cylinder mirror has a curved surface in horizontal axis, the original image acquired from the imaging system has the geometrical distortion, which requires the image processing algorithm for reconstruction. In this paper, the image reconstruction algorithms for two cases are studied: (1) to obtain an image with uniform angular resolution and (2) to obtain horizontally rectilinear image. The image acquisition model of the hyperbolic cylinder mirror imaging system is analyzed by the geometrical optics and the image reconstruction algorithms are proposed based on the image acquisition model. To show the validity of the proposed algorithms, experiments are carried out and presented in this paper. The experimental results show that the reconstructed images have a uniform angular resolution and a rectilinear form in horizontal axis, which are natural to human.

  • Characteristic analysis of the depth measurement system with a laser, a camera and a rotating mirror has been done and the parameter calibration technique for it has been proposed. In the proposed depth measurement system, the laser beam is reflected to the object by the rotating mirror and again the position of the laser beam is observed through the same mirror by the camera. The depth of the object pointed by the laser beam is computed depending on the pixel position on the CCD. There involved several number of internal and external parameters such as inter-pixel distance, focal length, position and orientation of the system components in the depth measurement error. In this paper, it is shown through the error sensitivity analysis of the parameters that the most important parameters in the sense of error sources are the angle of the laser beam and the inter pixel distance. The calibration techniques to minimize the effect of such major parameters are proposed.

  • We are developing Adaptive Optics (AO) system for astronomical use. The He-Ne laser works as an artificial light source. The tip-tilt correction servo is added to our AO system. The tip-tilt term, among the Zernike terms, is the biggest contributor of wavefront deformation caused by atmospheric turbulence at small telescopes. The tip-tilt correction servo consists of a Piezo tip-tilt platform with a mirror, a quadrant photodiode as a tip-tilt sensor, and controllers. The Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor measures the residual wavefront errors and they are corrected by the MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) deformable mirror. The MEMS deformable mirror allows the compact size at low cost compare to adaptive secondary mirror and other deformable mirrors. As the frame rates of the MEMS deformable mirror is about tens of kHz, the frame rates of the detector in wavefront sensor is the bottleneck of the wavefront correction speed. For faster performance, we replaced a CCD which provides frame rates only 70 Hz with a CMOS with frame rates up to 450 Hz.

  • To design a wide-field optical system, the inverted telephoto configuration, which has a negative front group and a positive rear group, is popular. For a two-mirror system, the inverse Cassegrain system has the inverted telephoto configuration, but the inverse Cassegrain system with the conventional, axially symmetric configuration shows severe field screening and ray obstruction. To avoid these problems, we put the aperture stop on the secondary mirror of an inverse Cassegrain system to increase field of view, and designed a wide-field off-axis two-mirror system which only uses the off-axis field, without ray obstruction.
