  • This paper reviews the optical link technologies which have been developed for gigabit-per-second wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical networks (WDM-PONs). Similarly to the 100Mb/s WDM-PON systems which have been deployed for trial services by KT, the most important requirement for 1Gb/s WDM-PON is wavelength independence (colorless feature) of its ONU/ONTs, which makes possible convenient operation and cost-effective maintenance with minimum inventory cost. Among various methods to implement such colorless feature, four promising candidates for gigabit WDM-PON are analyzed with their own development issues and their expected performances are compared.

Numerical analysis results of the cathodic protection for the underground steel pipe by anode installation method

  • This study aims to find out the best anode location for buried pipelines. Numerical simulation program known as CATPRO (Elsyca, Belgium) were used for confirming the best location of anodes and the effects of impressed current cathodic protection system. Applied conditions for numerical simulation were similar to on-site environmental conditions for optimal application of cathodic protection system. Used criterion of cathodic protection was NACE SP 0169, which describes that minimum requirement for cathodic protection is -850mV vs. CSE. Various layouts for anodes' installation were applied, which were distance between anodes, anode installation location, and applied current. The areas where cathodic protection potential was lower than -850mV vs. CSE was limited up to 50m from anode installation locations. It was founded numerical analysis obtain cost-effective and efficient cathodic protection methods before design and application the impressed cathodic protection system to on-site environment.

Application of Dynamic Programming to Optimization of a System Reliability

  • This paper is concerned with the optimization of a system reliability. Two kinds of the reliability model for optimal allocation of parallel redundancy are considered. The algorithm for solving the optimal redundancy problem is proposed by the use of dynamic programming(DP) method. The problem is approached with a standard DP formulation and the DP algorithm is applied to the model and then the optimal solution is found by the backtracking method. The method is applicable to the models having no constraints or having a cost constraint subject to a specified minimum requirement of the system reliability. A consequence of this study is that the developed computer program package are implemental for the optimization of the system reliability.

  • Present situation of Korean textile products regarding European eco-label criteria was assessed by analyzing harmful substances including pH, PCP & TeCP, formaldehyde, heavy metals, cleavable arylamines, allergenic dyes, pesticides, organic carriers, TBT as well as color fastness as the minimum quality requirement. Fabric specimens were submitted from six typical textile companies for product eco-testing. In six product groups selected, arylamines, allergenic dyes, halogenated organic carriers and color fastness were found to be parameters that failed to meet the criteria. Source elucidation of harmful substances were presented with their instrumental analysis results.

진동형 분체 최소착화에너지측정장치의 특성

  • It is widely recognized that conventional means for determining the minimum ignition energy(MIE) of powder are time-consuming and require operational skill. As a variety of new fine powders are being produced day by day in industry, there is an urgent need to a quicker and more economical means to measure MIE. To meet this requirement, we have developed a measurement system which employs a novel method to create an air/dust mixture in a miniature combustion box. In this system, the powder to be tested input into a hopper made of metal mesh, and successively fed downward to form a thin, curtain-like dust/air mixture by vibration. With this new apparatus, three type of powders -Lycopodium, Anthraquinone, and Polyacrylonitrile-were tested and the MIE data were compared with those taken with a conventional apparatus(the Hartmann tube). Two of them agreed satisfactory, but the other, anthraquinone, showed quite different values supposedly due to the agglomeration of the powder particles by static-charge.

  • HTS (High Temperature Superconducting) cable termination current lead has been designed based on simplified boundary conditions such as fixed temperature at both end and sdiabatic/convection in the side wall. However, in the real situation the current lead is enclosed with insulators and exposed to insulation oil and L$N_2$. Therefore it is necessary to consider them for the proper current lead design. In this paper, several important design parameters were chosen and their effect on the temperature distribution and heat loads on the current lead has been investigated. It was found that current lead has to be 2 stage to reach the minimum temperature requirement of insulation oil and insulator is required to reduce the cooling capacity of cryogenic system.

  • The quasi-phase matching (QPM) technique has dramatically changed the guidelines in developing nonlinear optical materials, which doesn't require birefringence and off-diagonal components for efficient wavelength conversion. Minimum requirement for QPM is the modulation of nonlinearity and ferroelectric materials with low coercive field has become fascinating in periodical poling. Stoichiometric lithium tantalate (SLT) has attractive advantages of low coercive field (∼l .5 KV/mm), high nonlinearity, high optical damage resistance and low thermo-optic coefficients, leading to a large aperture QPM devices for high power operation.   • To meet an increasing demand for high performance in gun dynamic plant, both a precise and a fast response positioning are strongly required for the gun servo system. A mode switching control(MSC) scheme, which includes a fine stabilizing controller, fast positioning one and a switching function, is widely used to meet this requirement. Stabilization is performed through PID controller, while a time optimal control method is used for target designation. In this paper, a modified PTOS(Proximate Time Optimal Servomechanism) algorithm is derived so as to accommodate the damping term in the gun plant model. Also, applying a mode switching strategy, the bumpless transfer is made possible when the controller switches from PTOS to PID. To show the effectiveness of the overall control system, simulation results are given including the gun dynamics.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the physical properties of rapid-setting asphalt concrete grouting materials. This study investigates the fluidity, viscosity and compressive strength at 3-hour of grouting materials with various mixing ratio. From the test results, when the quantity of CSA is over about 30 $\%$, the compressive strength of 3-hour was satisfied a minimum requirement of 7 days in Japan. Also, the fluidity for the time to infiltrate into pore of the asphalt concrete are enough to be applied in construction field.

  • This paper highlights the importance of carrying out global slope stability analysis as part of design calculations for geosynethetic walls in tiered configuration. Four design case histories were selected to examine the appropriateness of their design by performing additional slope stability analyses using the shear strength reduction method with in the frame work of finite element analysis. The results indicated that all of the walls examined, which were designed to meet the current design guide lines, did not satisfy the global slope stability requirement, and that longer reinforcements are required in the upper tiers to achieve the minimum factor of safety. Practical implications of the findings are discussed.
