Optimum location for the belt truss system for minimum roof displacement of steel buildings subjected to critical excitation

  • Currently, there are many lateral resisting systems utilized in resisting lateral loads being produced in an earthquake. Such systems can significantly reduce the roof's displacement when placed at an optimum location. Since in the design of tall buildings, the minimum distance between adjacent buildings is important. In this paper, the critical excitation method is used to determine the best location of the belt truss system while calculating the minimum required distance between two adjacent buildings. For this purpose, the belt truss system is placed at a specific story. Then the critical earthquakes are computed so that the considered constraints are satisfied, and the value of roof displacement is maximized. This procedure is repeated for all stories; i.e., for each, a critical acceleration is computed. From this set of computed roof displacement values, the story with the least displacement is selected as the best location for the belt truss system. Numerical studies demonstrate that absolute roof displacements induced through critical accelerations range between 5.36 to 1.95 times of the San Fernando earthquake for the first example and 7.67 to 1.22 times of the San Fernando earthquake for the second example. This method can also be used to determine the minimum required distance between two adjacent buildings to eliminate the pounding effects. For this purpose, this value is computed based on different standard codes and compared with the results of the critical excitation method to show the ability of the proposed method.

An Efficient Method for Minimum Distance Problem Between Shapes Composed of Circular Arcs and Lines (원호와직선으로 구성된 도형간의 효율적인 최소거리 계산방법)

  • Generally, to get the minimum distance between two arbitrary shapes that are composed of circular arcs and lines, we must calculate distances for all the possible pairs of the components from two given shapes. In this paper, we propose an efficient method for the minimum distance problem between two shapes by using their structural features after extracting the reduced component lists which are essential to calculate the minimum distance considering the relationship of shape location. Even though the reduced component lists may contain all the components of the shapes in the worst case, in the average we can reduce the required computation much by using the reduced component lists. This method may be efectively applied to calculating the minimum distance between two shapes which are generated by the CAD tool, like in the nesting system.

Evaluation of required seismic gap between adjacent buildings in relation to the Egyptian Code

  • International seismic codes stipulate that adjacent buildings should be separated by a specified minimum distance, otherwise the pounding effect should be considered in the design. Recent researches proposed an alternative method (Double Difference Combination Rule) to estimate seismic gap between structures, as this method considers the cross relation of adjacent buildings behavior during earthquakes. Four different criteria were used to calculate the minimum separation distance using this method and results are compared to the international codes for five separation cases. These cases used four case study buildings classified by different heights, lateral load resisting systems and fundamental periods of vibrations to assess the consistency in results for the alternative methods. Non-linear analysis was performed to calculate the inelastic displacements of the four buildings, and the results were used to evaluate the relation between elastic and inelastic displacements due to the ductility of structural elements resisting seismic loads. A verification analysis was conducted to guarantee that the separation distance calculated is sufficient to avoid pounding. Results shows that the use of two out of the four studied methods yields separation distances smaller than that calculated by the code specified equations without under-estimating the minimum separation distance required to avoid pounding.

  • This paper analyzes potential interference effect of DTV service on Radio Microphone in adjacent channel. For analysis, we assume that DTV operates on CH 51(692 MHz ~ 698 MHz) and radio microphone operates on CH 52 (698 MHz ~ 704 MHz) according to the Korea Communications Commission policy. Minimum Coupling Loss(MCL) method is used to determine the required protection distance and Monte Carlo method is used to determine guard band to meet interference probability of 0 % below. In conclusions, protection distance of 1.71 km and guard band of 2.4 MHz are required for indoor and protection distance of 18.86 km and guard band of 5.7 MHz are required for outdoor.

A Study on the Approaching Distance in Taking Action to Avoid Collision (피항동작시의 한계접근거이에 관한 연구)

  • In the Sailing Rules of International Regulation for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972, any definite distance between two vessels approaching each other is not referred for adequate maneuvering to avoid collision. At sea the officer in charge of bridge duty is required to guess safe distance before he takes maneuvering actions needed to avoid collision. Papers on safe distances calculated on the base of the motiional characteristics of ships for collision avoiding actions are very few. In this paper, the minimum safe approaching distances necessary for actions to be taken to avoid collision are calculated in numerical numbers definitely by mathematic formula based on the maneuvering indices got from experiments of actual ships. On the assumption that two vessels same in size and conditions are approaching each other, the author calculated the minimum safe approaching distance as 4.5 times, sufficient safe approaching one as 9.0 times the length of the ship involved in head-on situation and 5.0 times, 10 times respectively the length of the ship in each case mentioned above in crossing situation.

Methodology to estimate minimum required separation distance between vehicle and bicycle when overtaking (자동차와 자전거 간 추월 최소요구 이격거리 추정 방법론 연구)

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to develop a methodology to estimate the minimum required separation distance (MRSD) between a vehicle and a bicycle when overtaking. METHODS : Three steps have been conducted to develop a methodology to estimate MSRD. First, a literature review has been conducted on the measurement of MSRD, and how it may be applied in Korea. Second, two assumptions have been made to develop a methodology to estimate the MSRD. The first assumption is that the maximum separation distance between a vehicle and a bicycle can be observed when they are at the same location longitudinally. In addition, it is assumed that the separation distance is invalid when the contra-flow exists. Finally, three cameras were installed at a height of 10 m to record the vehicle-bicycle interaction. Moreover, the vehicle trajectories as well as the separation distance were coded and analyzed. Through the hypothesis test and the interval estimation, the sample mean was tested and the confidence interval was estimated. RESULTS : 141 records of separation distance data were collected, and the hypothesis test demonstrated that the MSRD in Korea is significantly higher than other countries. In addition, the confidence interval of the population mean of MSRD is from 1.51 m to 1.65 m with 95% level of confidence. CONCLUSIONS : It is expected that the proposed methodology to estimate MSRD would be beneficial in studying road safety of vehicles and bicycles. Also, the proposed MSRD is expected to be designated in the act of road and transportation.

  • The number of searched nodes and the computation time in an index should be minimized for optimizing the processing cost of the nearest neighbor query. The Measurement of search distance considered a circular location property of objects is required to accurately select the nodes which will be searched in the nearest neighbor query. In this paper, we propose the processing method of the nearest neighbor query be considered a circular location property of object where the search space consists of a circular domain and show its performance by experiments. The proposed method uses the circular minimum distance and the circular optimal distance which are the search measurements for optimizing the processing cost of the nearest neighbor query.

A study on the northern sea route safety convoy using ship handling simulation (선박조종시뮬레이션을 이용한 북극해 안전 호송에 관한 연구)

  • Due to global warming it is estimated that the arctic ocean route will be avaliable and traffic will increase by approximately year 2030. However, most navigation in the arctic is based on the ice breaker captains'orders, there is no exact measurement of convoy speed and distance between ships. So, this research was conducted to find out the minimum safe separation distance and minimum breaking distance via ship controling simulations, and the results are as stated. For breaking distances, for ships that have a lead distance which is 2~4 times the width of the ship and traveling less than 7 knots, crash astern and crash astern & hard rudder showed no significant difference. But ships traveling at 10 knots there was a decrease in breaking distance of 1L, from 3.5L to 2.5L. By analyzing 10 subject ships by crash astern the breaking distance for 5 knots is 0.98L~1.8L, for 8 knots is 1.9L~4.0L. The minimum safe separation distance in narrow sea-ways is 6L, but as the arctic sea-way is only one-way 3L is required. As the result, it is found that in the arctic the safe escort speed is less than 5 knots, if the escort speed is 8knots or more and by using crash astern & hard rudder to break the safe distance should be kept at 3.4L.

A Basic Study on the VTS Operator's Minimum Safe Distance (VTS관제사의 최소안전거리에 관한 기초 연구)

  • This study aims to enhance the effectivity of VTS(Vessel Traffic Service) control by investigating the minimum safe distance between vessel and vessel, vessel and land(obstacle) for the vessel's safe navigation within the VTS control area. In addition, to suggest basic data for the safe navigation, this study has done survey and analysis to each VTS center, and individual on the minimum safe distance to VTS operators of each ports of korea. Through ocean voyage by training ship, Singapore and Malacca strait's congested vessel traffic zone's control distance was compared and investigated the difference on safe distance by the different VTS operators. As a result, there was huge difference of minimum safe distance between the VTS operators belong to the same center. Over all, the port with gentle coastline, like donghae, the safe distance was wider than the other port. On the other hand, port with complex coastline and frequent entry and departure of the vessel, like mokpo, the safe distance was the shortest of all. Therefore, development of module suitable to port's natural conditions and traffic volume's necessity is required, for the operators affiliated to the same VTS center control according to formal method. Lastly, the full discussion by the expert group about establishment of standard control procedure in the future should be considered as well.

Seismic loss-of-support conditions of frictional beam-to-column connections

  • The evaluation of the loss-of-support conditions of frictional beam-to-column connections using simplified numerical models describing the transverse response of a portal-like structure is presented in this paper considering the effects of the seismic-hazard disaggregation. Real earthquake time histories selected from European Strong-motion Database (ESD) are used to show the effects of the seismic-hazard disaggregation on the beam loss-of-support conditions. Seismic events are classified according to different values of magnitudes, epicentral distances and soil conditions (stiff or soft soil) highlighting the importance of considering the characteristics of the seismic input in the assessment of the loss-of-support conditions of frictional beam-to-column connections. A rigid and an elastic model of a frame of a precast industrial building (2-DoF portal-like model) are presented and adopted to find the minimum required friction coefficient to avoid sliding. Then, the mean value of the minimum required friction coefficient with an epicentral distance bin of 10 km is calculated and fitted with a linear function depending on the logarithm of the epicentral distance. A complete parametric analysis varying the horizontal and vertical period of vibration of the structure is performed. Results show that the loss-of-support condition is strongly influenced by magnitude, epicentral distance and soil conditions determining the frequency content of the earthquake time histories and the correlation between the maxima of the horizontal and vertical components. Moreover, as expected, dynamic characteristics of the structure have also a strong influence. Finally, the effect of the column nonlinear behavior (i.e. formation of plastic hinges at the base) is analyzed showing that the connection and the column are a series system where the maximum force is limited by the element having the minimum strength. Two different longitudinal reinforcement ratios are analyzed demonstrating that the column strength variation changes the system response.
