  • Vibration of a non-linear system with multiple degrees of freedom under random parametric excitations was evaluated by probabilistic method. The non-linear characteristic terms of system structure were quasi-linearized and excitation terms were remained as they were. An analytical method where the expectation values of square mean of error was minimized was used. The numerical results were compared with those obtained by Monte Carlo simulation. A linear congruential generator and Box-Muller method were used in Monte Carlo simulation. The comparison showed the results by probabilistic method agreed well with those by Monte Carlo simulation.

  • Nonlinear dynamic analysis is generally used in automobile crash analysis and structural optimization considering crashworthiness uses the results of nonlinear dynamic analysis. Automobile crash optimization has high nonlinearity and difficulty in calculating sensitivity. Recently the equivalent static load (ESL) method has been proposed in order to overcome these difficulties. The ESL is the static load set generating the same displacement field as the nonlinear dynamic displacement field at each time step in dynamic analysis. From various researches regarding the ESL method, it has been proved that the ESL method is fairly useful. The ESL method can mathematically optimize a crash optimization problem through nonlinear analysis and well developed static optimization. The ESL is applied to nonlinear dynamic structural optimization of the automobile frontal impact problem. An automobile bumper is optimized. The mass of the structure is minimized while some constraints are satisfied.

  • Lip reading is a field of image processing to assist the process of sound recognition. In some environment, the capture of sound signal usually has significant noise and therefore, the recognition rate of sound signal decreases. Lip reading can be a good feature for the increase of recognition rates. Conventional lip extraction methods have been proposed widely. Maia et. al. proposed a method by the sum of Cr and Cb. However, there are two problems as follows: the point with maximum saturation is not always regarded as lips region and the inner part of lips such as oral cavity and teeth can be classified as lips. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a method which adopts the histogram-based classifier for the extraction of lips region. The proposed method consists of two stages, learning and test. The amount of computation is minimized because this method has no color conversion. The performance of proposed method gives 66.8% of detection rate compared to 28% of conventional ones.

  • The paper develops a method of minimizing power transmission losses by optimum control of reactive power flow. In the past, because the optimizing method considers as the first step the minimization of node voltage deviations and as the second step the minimization of transmission losses within the system, the calculating procedure was more complex and difficult to handle. In this paper, a new computing method for real time control on a digital computer is described which aims at a coordinated use of reactive power sources and voltage regulating devices. The power transmission losses are minimized by a gradient method while satisfying the constrained system voltage conditions and sensitivity parameters are the basis of the method.

  • The nonlinear analytic function expansion nodal (AFEN) method is applied to the solution of the time-dependent neutron diffusion equation. Since the AFEN method requires both the particular solution and the homogeneous solution to the transient fixed source problem, the derivation solution method is focused on finding the particular solution efficiently. To avoid complicated particular solutions, the source distribution is approximated by quadratic polynomials and the transient source is constructed such that the error due to the quadratic approximation is minimized. In addition, this paper presents a new two-node solution scheme that is derived by imposing the constraint of current continuity at the interface corner points. The method is verified through a series of applications to the NEACRP PWR rod ejection benchmark problem.

  • Recently, identification of modal parameters using the response only data has attracted considerable attention particularly where the classic modal testing methods is difficult to conduct. One drawback of the response only data, also known as Operational Modal Analysis (OMA), is that only the unscaled mode shapes can be obtained which restricts the applications of OMA. The Mass change method is a usual way to scale the operational mode shapes. In this article a new method is proposed to optimize the additive mass for scaling of the unscaled mode shapes from OMA for which a priori knowledge of the Finite Element model of structure is required. It is shown that the total error of the scaled mode shapes is minimized using the proposed method. The method is validated using a numerical case study of a beam. Moreover, the experimental results of a clamped-clamped beam demonstrate the applicability of the method.

  • Optimization is an important subject which is widely used in engineering problems. In this paper, an analytical method is developed for optimum design of reinforced concrete beams considering both flexural and shear effects. A closed-form formulation is derived for optimal height and rebar of beams. The total material cost of steel and concrete is considered as the objective function which is minimized during the optimization process. The ultimate flexural and shear capacities of the beam are considered as the main constraints. The ultimate limit state is considered for deriving the relations for flexural capacity of the beam. The design requirements are considered according to the item 9 of the Iranian National Building. Analytical formulas and some curves are proposed to be used for optimum design of RC beams. The proposed method can be used to perform the optimization of RC beams without the need of any prior knowledge in optimization. Also, the results of the studied numerical example show that the proposed method results in a better design comparing with the other methods.

  • This paper proposes a new method for the recognition of road surface marks and numbers. The proposed method designates a region of interest on the road surface without first detecting a lane. The road surface markings are extracted by location and size using a connection component analysis. Distortion due to the perspective effect is minimized by normalizing the size of the road markings. The road surface marking of the connected component is recognized by matching it with the stored road marking templates. The proposed method is implemented using C language in Raspberry Pi 4 system with a camera module for a real-time image processing. The system was fixedly installed in a moving vehicle, and it recorded a video like a vehicle black box. Each frame of the recorded video was extracted, and then the proposed method was tested. The results show that the proposed method is successful for the recognition of road surface marks and numbers.

  • In this study, a heuristic for surface mounters is developed to find an efficient sequence on PCB and rack assignment by component grouping. As setting up 4 reels in a group, the distance of rack moving can be minimized. And then, a generalized model for N reels in a group is developed. It is found that the performance of this heuristic is better than other heuristics found in the literature. Throughout the simulation study, the suggested heuristic is performed about 8.2 ∼ 12% better than other heuristics.
