Abstract For mobile multimedia data services, future mobile communication networks will consist of small cells. In case of smaller cell size, the number of user movements between cells will increase and more network resources will be consumed for processing frequent handoffs. This processing delay will cause frequent connection service disruptions. To solve these problems, a multicast-based handoff method ,called SGMH(Sub-Group Multicast-based Handoff), is suggested. SGMH method estimates future movements of mobile hosts and setups a dynamic multicast connection tree for procesing handoffs. For performance evaluation, we represent flows of data and control messages as timing diagrams and introduce several network related factors. In terms of buffer overhead and service disruption time we compared the SGMH method to other methods. The results show that SGMH method has better performance in that it can reduce consumption of network resources and minimize service disruption time.

  • Asynchronous transfer mode(ATM) is flexible to support the various multimedia communication services such as data, voice, and image by applying asynchronous time-sharing and statistical multiplexing techniques to the existing data communication. ATM service is categorized to CBR, VBR, UBR, and ABR according to characteristics of the traffic and a required service qualities. Among them, ABR service guarantees a minimal bandwidth and can transmit cells at a maximum transmission rate within the available bandwidth. To minimize the cell losses in transmission and switching, a feedback information in ATM network is used to control the traffic. In this paper, predictive control algorithms are proposed for the feedback information. When the feedback information takes a long propagation delay to the backward nodes, ATM switch can experience a congestion situation from the queue length increases, and a high queue length fluctuations in time. The control algorithms proposed in this paper provides predictive control model using slop changes of the queue length function and previous data of the queue lengths. Simulation shows the effectiveness result of the proposed control algorithms.

  • Background Chloral hydrate (CH) is the primary agent most commonly used for pediatric sedation prior to diagnostic, therapeutic procedures. In the management of pediatric facial laceration, the initial dose of CH has to balance the need for adequate sedation against the need to minimize sedative complications. Methods A retrospective review of medical records of 834 children who visited our emergency room for facial lacerations from August 2010 to September 2012 was conducted. They were divided into six groups on the basis of the initial dose of CH administered. Further, each group was compared with the standard group (70 to ${\leq}80mg/kg$) with respect to sedation success, augmentation dose, failed sedation, time to procedure, and time of stay. Results With respect to the complication rate, only group 1 (range, 40 to ${\leq}50mg/kg$) showed a significantly lower complication rate. In the case of all the other variables considered, there were no significant differences among any of the groups. Conclusions An initial CH dose of $48{\pm}2mg/kg$ does not negatively affect the success rate of sedation or the need for additional sedative during the primary closure of facial lacerations in pediatric patients. Further, lower doses reduce the incidences of adverse effects and do not delay procedure readiness. Therefore, $48{\pm}2mg/kg$ of CH can be considered the optimal initial dose for pediatric sedation.

  • Recently the interest in disaster prevention on super tall buildings is increasing. Especially in fire, against increasing of evacuation time due to high-rise, It is being tried to minimize the fire spread in building. Fire compartments using the fire-resistant wall and door, typical method to control the fire spread in buildings, delay the fire spread to other compartments and consequently evacuation time increases. But the existing provisions adjure only 2-hour fire resistance with maximum limit regardless of the super tall buildings, so this is a obstacle for research and development of the fire resistance wall in super tall buildings. In this study, we reviewed the fire resistance ratings of the wall, and presented the development directions for the fire resistance wall in super tall buildings considering fire resistance, construction and application of the wall.

  • Virtual Machine (VM) resource management is crucial to satisfy the Quality of Service (QoS) demands of various multimedia services in a media cloud platform. To this end, this paper presents a VM resource allocation model that dynamically and optimally utilizes VM resources to satisfy QoS requirements of media-rich cloud services or applications. It additionally maintains high system utilization by avoiding the over-provisioning of VM resources to services or applications. The objective is to 1) minimize the number of physical machines for cost reduction and energy saving; 2) control the processing delay of media services to improve response time; and 3) achieve load balancing or overall utilization of physical resources. The proposed VM allocation is mapped into the multidimensional bin-packing problem, which is NP-complete. To solve this problem, we have designed a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model, as well as heuristics for quantitatively optimizing the VM allocation. The simulation results show that our scheme outperforms the existing VM allocation schemes in a media cloud environment, in terms of cost reduction, response time reduction and QoS guarantee.

  • A recently developed tunnel section enlargement method can maintain traffic flow during construction by using a protector. By keeping traffic flowing, it can minimize the lost time and costs associated with diversions and also the accompanying environmental pollution. On the other hand, installing the protector can lengthen the construction period and increase the direct cost. This paper presents a method for analyzing the economic feasibility of tunnel section enlargement methods considering the direct construction cost and the indirect social cost. The indirect costs are divided into categories of: vehicle driving cost, travel time delay cost, and environmental pollution cost. The economic efficiency of existing technology is compared with the new method in an case study of Namsan Tunnel 3.

  • Real-time Internet multi-media services requires fast data transmission, QoS and IP multicast. MARS is proposed to support IP multicast in the ATM Networks based on Internet, and RSVP is proposed to guarantee QoS in the Internet which is originally based on only best-effort service. In this paper, we propose two mechanisms to support IP multicast service involving QoS support over the ATM networks with MARS architecture based on multiple MCSs. In the first mechanism, when an ATM host requests joining into a specific multicast group, the MARS selects a proper MCS among the multiple MCSs to minimize the average time of transfer delay between the sender and the group members. In the second mechanism, when the RSVP reservation message from group member arrive at the MARS, the MARS which can process the RSVP reservation message select again the MCS with using the MCS management table. Finally, we recommend the mechanism to keep the QoS of Internet service and to reduce the processing-overhead between MARS and MCS.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a cycle-free signal timing model for minimizing delays based on Third-generation control concept using Genetic Algorithm. A special feature of this model is its ability to manage delays of turning movements on the cycle basis. The model produces a cycle-free based signal timing(cycles and green times) for each intersection to minimize delays of turning movements on the cycle basis. The performance of cycle-free signal timings was evaluated on normal (v/c = 0.7) and oversaturated (v/c=1.0) conditions. The performance measures are throughput and the number of queued vehicles at the end of green time. The result shows that the cycle free signal timing is superior to the fixed signal timing to manage traffic flows of intersections; (1) the proposed model accomplishes the basic objective of the research, producing cycle free signal timings on the cycle basis, (2) on normal conditions, cycle free signal timings produce less queued vehicles at the end of green time, and (3) on oversaturated conditions, the cycle free signal timing is superior to the fixed signal timing to manage saturated traffic flows of intersections.

  • The vitamin K antagonist (VKA), cumadin, or warfarin, is the only antithrombotic drug that can be orally administered and has excellent effective for decades. However, it is cumbersome to periodically inspect the prothrombin time (PT) order to maintain adequate concentrations that do not cause bleeding, takes a few days to indicate therapeutic effects, gets affected by several factors such as food and drugs etc, and narrow in the therapeutic range. Although recently in development, the non-vitamin K antagonist anticoagulants(NOACs) exhibit a rapid onset of action and have relatively short half- lives compared to Coumadin. Because of these pharmacokinetic properties, it is possible to modify an individual's anticoagulation status quite rapidly, minimizing the period where the anticoagulation activity is therapeutically suboptimal. And the short half -lives of these drug allow for the relatively rapid reduction of their anticoagulation effects. There are currently no published clinical trials specifically assessing the bleeding risks associated with dental procedures for patients taking the NOACs. It is not necessary to interrupt NOAC medication for dental procedures that are likely to cause bleeding, but which have a low risk of bleeding complications. Because the bleeding risk for these procedures is considered to be low, the balance of effects is in favour of continuing the NOAC treatment without modification, to avoid increasing the risk of a thromboembolic event. The patients should be advised to miss(apixaban or dabigatran) or delay(rivaroxaban) a dose of their NOAC prior to dental procedures that are likely to cause bleeding and which have a higher risk of bleeding complications. Because the risk of bleeding complications for these procedures is considered to be higher, the balance effects is in favour of missing or delaying the pretreatment NOAC dose. The interruption is only for a short time to minimize the effect on thromboembolic risk.

  • Cognitive Radio Ad-Hoc Networks (CRAHNs) enable to overcome the shortage of frequency resources due to the increase of radio services. In order to avoid interference with the primary user in CRANH, channel sensing to check the idle channel is required, and when the primary user appears, the time delay due to handover should be minimized through fast idle channel selection. In this paper, throughput was improved by reducing the number of channel sensing and preferentially sensing a channel with a high probability of being idle, using reinforcement learning. In addition, we proposed a multi-channel MAC (Medium Access Control) protocol that can minimize the possibility of collision with the primary user by sensing the channel at the time of data transmission without performing periodic sensing. The performance was compared and analyzed through computer simulation.
