  • Objective : To test the hypotheses that individualized traditional Korean acupuncture improves pain and disability in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee and that benefits remain after stopping treatment more so than is the case for standardized minimal acupuncture. Design : Randomized single blind controlled trial with two intervention arms (individualized traditional Korean acupuncture, standardized minimal acupuncture) of six weeks' duration and three months follow-up. Setting : Acupuncture interventions were applied by two training doctors in the Department of Acupuncture and Moxibustion in a 1000-bed hospital. Assessment of the result was performed in a university-based laboratory. Participants : 50 patients with symptoms of knee osteoarthritis as diagnosed by an orthopedist. Intervention : Individualized traditional Korean acupuncture or standardized minimal acupuncture for six weeks. Main outcome measures: Primary outcome measure was pain as measured by the visual analogue scale. Secondary measures of pain and disability included the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) index, Short Form-36 (SF-36), Lequesne Functional Index (LFI) score and Korean version of Health Assessment Questionnaire (KHAQ). Discussion : This paper presents detail on the rationale, design, methods and operational aspects of the trial.

  • Nowadays minimalism has influence on Korean Architecture and Interior Architecture at the turning of new generatiov. Minimalism is a plural phenomenon that has developed from Modernism to Contemporary but there is the tendency to define minimalism within Architecture and Art. Also it is a fact that there are many disordered minimal aspects in Architecture. This study is started from accurate understanding the mistakes in the field of Interior Architecture, that are brought by the elapse of time, and analogizing the circumstances of Interior Architecture in the field of Architecture. Especially the purpose of this study is to grasp the relation between the minimal characteristics of Korean traditional Architecture and the stagnancy of Korean Architecture. Under the assumption that the characteristics of minimalism exist in Korean tradition, this study contents the characteristics of minimalism in western modernism to analyze the contemporary Korean Architecture and interior Architecture that the assumption is appled to.

  • Minimalism combines the adjective 'minimal' and the suffix 'ism', and was first coined in the 1960s. Minimalism draws on the belief that when the use of artistic skills and adaptation is minimized and only the essentials or core is expressed, the discrepancy or distance between reality and art can be kept to a minimum; and thus, true reality can be achieved. To realize minimalism, artists creating paintings, sculptures and other forms of visual art eliminate unnecessary elements and strip objects to its essentials. And hence, most minimalist artwork used minimum amount of color and focused on expressing the geometric essence of objects. Such simplistic styles of minimalism can be seen today in various designs. Apple's iPod design and other product designs as well as graphic designs are just few of the examples. Drawing on the spirit of minimalism, Icongraphics pursues beauty and pleasure in the minimal use of color and form. And what lies beneath Icongraphics' artistic style is its pursuit of simplistic essentials, sending a strong message to the digitalized and complex lives of modern people.

  • In this paper, we present a procedure to design the robust optimal supervisor which has the minimal cost in the sense of average for a given multiple-modelled discrete event system DES. In order to design the robust optimal supervisor, we extend the optimal supervisor design algorithm for a deterministic DES to the case of multiple-modelled DESs. In addition, using the proposed algorithm with modified costs of events and penalities of states, we can show whether a robust supervisor for a given multiple-modelled DES exists and design the minimally restricted robust supervisor.

  • Creating an artificial strain with a minimal gene set for a specific purpose is every biologist's dream. With the complete genome sequencing of more than 50 microorganisms and extensive functional analyses of their genes, it is possible to design a genetic blueprint for a simple custom-designed microbe with the minimal gene set. Two different approaches are being considered. The first 'top-down' approach is trimming the genome to a minimal gene set by selectively removing genes of an organism thought to be unnecessary based on microbial genomics. The second 'bottom-up' approach is to synthesize the proposed minimal genome from basic chemical building blocks. The 'top-down' approach starting with the genome of a well known microorganism is more technically feasible, whereas the bottom-up approach may not be attainable in the nearest future because of the lack of the complete functional analysis of the genes needed for a life. Here in this study, we used the top-down approach to minimize the E. coli genome to create an artificial organism with 'core' elements for self-sustaining and self-replicating cells by eliminating unnecessary genes. Using several different kinds of sophisticated deletion techniques combined with a p:1age and transposons, we deleted about 19% of the E. coli genome without causing any damages to cellular growth. This smaller E. coli genome will be further reduced to a genome with a minimal gene l;et essential for cell life. This minimized E. coli genome can lead to the construction of many custom-designed strains with myriad practical and commercial applications.

  • For a shunt power quality controller (SPQC) the DC side voltage value which is closely related to the compensation performance is a significant parameter. Buy so far, very little discussion has been conducted on this in a quantitative manner by previous publications. In this paper, a method to design the DC side voltage of SPQC is presented according to the compensation performance in the single-phase system and the three-phase system respectively. First, for the reactive current and the harmonic current compensation, a required minimal value of the DC side voltage with a zero total harmonic distortion (THD) of the source current and a unit power factor is obtained for a typical load, through the equivalent circuit analysis and the Fourier Transform analytical expressions. Second, when the DC side voltage of SPQC is lower than the above-obtained minimal value, the quantitative relationship between the DC side voltage and the THD after compensation is also elaborated using the curve diagram. Hardware experimental results verify the design method.

  • In this paper. for $\pi$/4 and $\pi$/8 PSK. we proposed to condition to obtain coding gain increasing states, by design encoder of analytical method with minimal complexity in limited bandwidth and power channels. In order to improve the bit error rate(BER), comparing Ungerboeck designed the TCM. we propose MTCM(Multiple trellis-coded modulation) with multiplicity(k=2), by optimum encoder design. By design encoder of analytical method. the trellis encoder can be minimal complexity and the decoder be used Viterbi decoder(MLSE). When compared to the TCM and MTCM with AWGN channels. the condition of performance enhancement of the MTCM with multiplicity(k=2) is the case of parallel transition in TCM systems. without alternating data transmission rate in bandwidth and power limited channels.

  • As a practical and effective seismic resisting technology, the base isolation system has seen extensive applications in buildings and bridges. However, a few problems associated with conventional lead-rubber bearings have been identified after historical strong earthquakes, e.g., excessive permanent deformations of bearings and potential unseating of bridge decks. Recently the applications of shape memory alloys (SMA) have received growing interest in the area of seismic response mitigation. As a result, a variety of SMA-based base isolators have been developed. These novel isolators often lead to minimal permanent deformations due to the self-centering feature of SMA materials. However, a rational design approach is still missing because of the fact that conventional design method cannot be directly applied to these novel devices. In light of this limitation, a displacement-based design approach for highway bridges with SMA isolators is proposed in this paper. Nonlinear response spectra, derived from typical hysteretic models for SMA, are employed in the design procedure. SMA isolators and bridge piers are designed according to the prescribed performance objectives. A prototype reinforced concrete (RC) highway bridge is designed using the proposed design approach. Nonlinear dynamic analyses for different seismic intensity levels are carried out using a computer program called "OpenSees". The efficacy of the displacement-based design approach is validated by numerical simulations. Results indicate that a properly designed RC highway bridge with novel SMA isolators may achieve minor damage and minimal residual deformations under frequent and rare earthquakes. Nonlinear static analysis is also carried out to investigate the failure mechanism and the self-centering ability of the designed highway bridge.

  • This paper investigates the relationship between the two problems, supervisor reduction and observation function (projection) design, which arise in supervisory control of DEDS. It is shown through an example that a reduced supervisor of minimal size does not necessarily result in a maximal projection when a projection design method which uses the transition structure of a supervisor is applied. Also, if an L-realizable projection P is available and if a supervisor has a special structural feature, a cover C for supervisor reduction can be easily obtained. By investigating the control-compatibility of states of the reduced supervisor based on C, we can also check maximality of P in a simple manner.
