Development of a New Miniature Actuator providing both Kinesthetic and Vibrotactile Feedback for Haptic Interface (근감과 진동촉감 피드백을 제공하는 햅틱 인터페이스용 새로운 소형 액추에이터의 개발)

  • This paper presents a new miniature haptic display to convey ample haptic information to a user of a handheld interface. There are buttons on interfaces or general electronic devices, but existing buttons provide haptic feedback of only one passive pattern to a user. Because humans perceive tactile and kinesthetic information simultaneously when they handle objects the proposed actuator provides both sensations at once. It is able to generate various levels of kinesthetic sensations when pressing a button under diverse situations. Also, vibrotactile feedback can be delivered for exciting haptic effects with numerous patterns. Its performance was evaluated in accordance with the resistive force by changing the intensity of the input current. Experiments show that the proposed actuator has the ability to provide numerous haptic sensations for more realistic and complex haptic experiences.

Thread Shape Design Using Joining and Release Analysis of Bolts (조임 및 풀림 해석을 이용한 나사산 형상 설계)

  • As the sizes of mobile phones and watch phones decrease, the joining bolt for the products should also be decreased to a miniature size. However, the miniature-sized bolt has to support sufficient joining and anti-releasing torque to keep the product fastened. In this study, the thread shapes are designed to improve anti-releasing performance of bolts. Especially, when bolt materials is stronger than nut materials, the design of thread shapes is needed, like bolt for wood, to improve the fastening capability. Through the joining and releasing analyses of bolts, the thread shapes for SUS302 bolt and Mg alloy nut are newly designed. It was shown that the newly designed bolt has 20 % higher anti-releasing torque and 35% lower torque loosening slope compared to the standard bolt.

Modeling and Vibration Control of the Miniature Universal Testing Machine (소형 재료시험기의 모델링 및 진동 제어)

  • This paper proposes the modeling scheme of the Miniature Universal Testing Machine (MUTM) composed of 36 thin-beam-type bimorph PZTs and the control algorithm to minimize the residual vibration of the MUTM in the dynamic testing of specimens. In the operation of the MUTM, hysteresis, residual displacement and vibration of it are major issues. From the analysis of the MUTM behaviors, the hysteresis is described by the curving fitting scheme with the function of an input voltage. The dynamic characteristics of the MUTM are identified by the frequency domain modeling technique based on the experimental data. The interested bandwidth is focused on 125-315HZ for effective modeling and control. For the robust vibration control of the MUTM, the sliding mode control and the Kalman filter as observer are proposed. The paper also proposes the best input signal type to operate the MUTM effectively. The feasibility of the proposed modeling scheme and control algorithm are tested and verified experimentally.

  • Bellows is used to control temperature of a Joule-Thomson micro cryocooler. It is made of Nickelcobalt alloy that retains mechanical properties from cryogenic temperature to temperature of 570K. The geometry of bellows is an axisymmetric shell and Nitrogen with high pressure was charged at temperature of 293K. During cool-down process, the pressure and volume of Nitrogen are changed and must be satisfied with state equation. At cryogenic temperature, Nitrogen can exist as a part liquid and part vapor. Pressure-density-temperature behavior under this vaporliquid phase equilibrium is closely given by the Modified-Benedict-Webb-Rubin(MBWR) state equation. To evaluate deformation of bellows for temperature change, the numerical calculation of the volume within bellows and finite element analysis of bellows under internal pressure were iteratively performed until MBWR state equation is satisfied. The numerical results show that deformation of the bellows can be analyzed by the present method in a wide range of temperature including cryogenic temperature.

Assessment of Creep Properties of 9Cr Steel Using Small Punch Creep Testing (소형펀치 크리프 시험을 이용한 9Cr강의 크리프 상수 평가)

  • Recently small punch creep testing (or miniature disc bend creep test) has received much attention through European collaborative research projects. This method was considered as a substitute for the conventional creep rupture testing by which the residual creep life is measured from the specimen taken out from serviced components of high temperature plants. It would be beneficial if the material creep properties such as power law creep constants as well as the creep rupture life can be measured from the small punch creep test. In this paper a method of assessing creep constants from the small punch creep testing is proposed. Finite element analyses were performed to investigate evolution of stress and strain rate at the weakest locations of the small punch creep specimen. Elastic-plastic-secondary creep analyses were carried out. The estimation equations for creep constants by the small punch creep testing are proposed based on the finite analysis results. Small punch creep tests were also performed with 9Cr steel and the accuracy of the proposed equation was verified by the experimental results.

  • A fuel metering unit using PWM(Pulse Width Modulated) solenoid valve has some advantages such as low cost, small size and simple structure. The mathematical model and its experimental rig of the fuel metering unit using PWM solenoid valve and CPDV(Constant Pressure Drop Valve) for miniature turbo engines were constructed. As the results of simulation, some major parameters which have dominant effects on the performance were found. And the experimental results verified the validity of established model by showing the good agreement with the numerical simulation results. Hence, this system modeling could be used effectively in the actual development of a PWM fuel control system.

  • 본 논문에서는 $CAVEW^{TM}-like$ 시스템과 같은 대형 디스플레이 기반의 몰입형 시뮬레이션 환경에 필요한 인터랙션 기법을 제안한다. 축소 모형(miniature) 인터랙션은 원거리에 있는 객체를 쉽게 선택하거나 조작하기 위하여 가상 세계 전체를 축소하여 사용자 근처에 디스플레이하고 이를 조작함으로써 대상 객체와 상호작용 할 수 있도록 해준다. 또한, 조감도(bird's eye view)로 표현되는 지도상에 사용자 위치를 표시하여 가상 세계 탐색시 이동 경로를 쉽게 파악할 수 있도록 하였다. 축소 모형은 투명 패널 인터페이스를 통하여 보여지며 사용자는 이를 이용하여 택타일 피드백(tactile feedback)을 제공 받을 수 있다. 그리드(grid)를 이용한 비주얼 가이더는 가상 세계 내에 그리드를 디스플레이하여 대상 객체와 사용자간의 위치 관계를 쉽게 파악할 수 있도록 해준다. 일반적으로 대형 디스플레이 환경에서의 인터랙션은 정확한 깊이 인식이 어렵기 때문에 인터랙션 시사용자의 불필요한 행위를 유발하게 된다. 본 논문에서 제안하는 기법은 이 같은 문제점을_개선하여 객체 조작 시 느껴지는 피로감을 최소화 시킬 수 있으며 다양한 몰입 및 상황 기반 시뮬레이션 어플리케이션에 적용되어 활성화 될 수 있다.

  • The ballast, one of track components, plays an essential role as intermedium in transmitting train load to subgrade safely, and the deterioration of ballast directly effects the growth of track irregularity. In this study, we determined the main factor of ballast deterioration was miniature of ballast gravel caused MTT (Multiple Tie Tamper) works and accumulated traffic loads. To estimate the deterioration characteristics of ballast, we carried out field test (Chap.2) through track construction for test and the model test (Chap.3) simulating the actual operation environment, have done a comparative analysis with the sample's result (crushing rate) of high-speed railroad running actually.

  • Experimental study was conducted to evaluate the performance of a miniature loop heat pipe (MLHP) with non-inverted meniscus type capillary structure. All parts of MLHP in this study were made of copper including the capillary structure and the distilled water was used as a working fluid of MLHP. The outer diameter of evaporator was 9 mm and its length was 119 mm. The effective pore size of the capillary structure was 30 micron and its porosity was 60%. The vapor transport line, the liquid transport line and the condenser were consisted of single 4.0 mm copper tube. The distance between the evaporator and the condenser region was 200 mm and the length of the loop was 969 mm. This MLHP was operated successfully at any orientation but the gravity highly influenced the thermal performance of the MLHP. The maximum thermal load was 130 watts at the bottom heat mode and the 20 watts at the top heat mode.
