Cavitation in a Shaft-less Double Suction Centrifugal Miniature Pump

  • Based on the consideration that the cavitation would affect the operation stability of miniature pumps, the 3-D turbulent cavitating flow in a test pump was simulated by using a mixed cavitation model and k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model. In order to investigate the influence of inlet geometry parameters on the cavitation performance of the miniature pump, two more impellers are designed for comparison. Based on the results, the following conclusions are drawn: 1) Cavitation performance of the double suction shaft-less miniature pump having different impeller is equivalent to the centrifugal pump having ordinary size, though the flow passage at impeller inlet is small; 2) The miniature pump having radial impeller can produce much higher pump head, but lower cavitation performance than that having the impeller based on the conventional design method; 3) It is believed that by applying the double suction design, the miniature pump achieved relatively uniform flow pattern upstream the impeller inlet, which is favorable for improving cavitation performance.

Experimental investigation of jet pump performance used for high flow amplification in nuclear applications

  • The jet pump can be used in a test device of a nuclear reactor for high flow amplification as it reduces inlet flow requirement and thereby size of the process components. In the present work, a miniature jet pump was designed to meet high flow amplification greater than 3. Subsequently, experiments were carried out using a test setup for design validation and performance evaluation of the jet pump for different parameters. It was observed that a minimum pressure of 0.6 bar (g) was required for the secondary fluid inside the jet pump to ensure cavitation free performance at high amplification. Spacing between the nozzle tip and the mixing chamber entry point had significant effect on the performance of the jet pump. Variation in primary flow, temperature and area ratio also affected the performance. It was observed that at high flow amplification, the analytical solution differed significantly from experimental results due to very large velocities encountered in the miniature size jet pump.

Study on the Development of Two-Stage Centrifugal Blood Pump for Cardiopulmonary Support System

  • In the cardiopulmonary support system with an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), a higher pump head is demanded for a blood pump. In order to realize a blood pump with higher pump head, higher anti-hemolysis and thrombosis performances, a study on the development of unprecedented multistage blood pump was conducted. In consideration of the application of the blood pump for pediatric patients, a miniature two-stage centrifugal blood pump with the impeller's diameter of 40mm was designed and the performance was examined in experiments and computations. Some useful knowledge for a design of the blood pump with higher anti-hemolysis and thrombosis performances was obtained.

기상측정용 3축 구조의 초소형 와전류 센서 개발 및 평가 (Ultra Miniature Eddy Current Sensor with 3 Axes for On-Machine-Measurement)

  • The OMM(On-Machine-Measurement) system has many advantages compare to conventional measurement in the way the time and cost. But, the sensor suitable to OMM system is restrictive use. Touch trigger probe sensor has long time for measurement and non-contact sensor has directional demerit. Because the long mechanical parts such as gear and lead screw for pump, injector and machine tools has big and heavy, unclamp and transferring for measurement in machining process is very difficult. This paper presents a development of ultra miniature eddy current displacement sensor with 3 axes for On-Machine-Measurement system. The accuracy of the sensor is experimentally proved in the grinding machine. In experimental results, the accuracy has under ${\pm}5\;{\mu}m$.

  • Soft fluidic actuators (SFAs) are widely utilized in various areas such as wearable systems due to the inherent compliance which allows safe and flexible interaction. However, SFA-driven systems generally require a large pump, multiple valves and tubes, which hinders to develop a miniaturized system with small range of motion. Thus, a highly integrated soft actuator needs to be developed for implementing a compact SFA-driven system. In this study, we propose an electro-hydraulic soft zipping actuator that can be used as a miniature pump. This actuator exerts tactile force as a dielectric liquid contained inside the actuator pressurized its deformable part. In addition, the proposed actuator can estimate the internal dielectric liquid thickness by using its self-sensing function. Besides, the electrical characteristics and driving performance of the proposed system were verified through experiments.

HMD용 발향장치 설계와 적용 (Application and Design of Scent Display Device for Head-Mounted Display)

  • Studies to augment emotion and immersion in multimedia content through olfactory stimulation are being increasingly conducted in the past two decades, and a variety of scent devices have been developed. Most of the scent devices are very large and heavy; consequently, they are installed on a table rather than being attached to the Head-mounted Display (HMD). Even if such devices are mounted on the HMD, it is not possible to control the scent density because of the size limitation, and it is not easy to be immersed in the experience because of the noise caused by the scent device. In order for an actual virtual reality or an augmented reality system to work efficiently with the scent device, three conditions - noiseless, a compact design, and concentration control- must be satisfied. In this study, we design a scent device that satisfies these three conditions. By using a miniature piezoelectric pump, a small size scent device is designed so that it can be easily attached to the lower end of the HMD, and hardly any noise is generated. Moreover, it is possible to control the concentration of the scent by controlling the piezoelectric pump using amplitude and frequency.

지로터(2개의 타원 조합) 형상 및 포트 설계를 통한 오일펌프 성능인자 향상 (Performance Improvement of Oil Pump by Design of Gerotor (Combined Profile - Two Ellipses) and Port)

  • A gerotor is suitable for miniature manufacturing because it has high discharge per 1 cycle and a simple structure, while also being widely used for lubrication oil of engines and as a hydraulic source of automatic transmission. In the automobile industry, improvements in fuel efficiency and noise reduction have recently come to the fore. It has also been necessary to continuously improve the flow rate and noise of internal gear pumps for better fuel efficiency through optimal gerotor and port shape design. In this study, to develop an optimal gerotor with a new lobe shape, 2-ellipses-combined, the equation of the lobe shape was derived, and CFD analysis results were compared for 2-ellipses with those of the previous gerotors (3-ellipses and ellipse1-involuteellipse2). A performance test for the oil pump with the optimal rotor (2-ellipses) was carried out and showed good agreement with the results obtained from CFD analysis.

  • A gerotor is suitable for miniature manufacturing because it has a high discharge per cycle and a simple structure, while also being widely used as lubrication oil of engines and the hydraulic source of automatic transmission. In the automobile industry, it has been necessary to continuously improve the flow rate and noise of internal gear pumps for better fuel efficiency through optimal gerotor design. In this study, to obtain an optimal gerotor with an ellipse-elliptical involute-ellipse combined lobe shape, an automatic program was developed for calculating performance parameters and drawing a gerotor profile. An oil pump was assembled with the optimal gerotor together with the port used at the actual field and CFD analysis was performed on this assembly using Ansys-CFX. A performance test for the oil pump was carried out and showed good agreement with the results obtained from the theoretical analysis and the CFD analysis.

상자 모형으로 추정한 동해의 생물 펌프 (Biological Pump in the East Sea Estimated by a Box Model)

  • 산업혁명 이후 인류가 과량으로 방출한 이산화탄소가 지구환경에 어떤 영향을 미치는지, 그리고 해양이 흡수하는 탄소량의 크기가 얼마인지에 대한 연구들이 진행되고 있다. 대양과 비슷한 순환 특징을 가지고 있는 동해가 이산화탄소 증가와 지구온난화에 대해 어떻게 반응하는지를 알아보기 위한 연구계획의 일환으로 탄소순환에 중요하게 기여하는 생물펌프의 크기를 간단한 상자모형을 적용시켜 추정하였다. 매개변수로는 인산염을 사용하였는데, 동해에서 일어나고 있는 수층 구조의 변화를 고려해서 해수 수지와 용존산소 수지를 맞춘 다음에, 인산염의 과거 자료를 바탕으로 인의 순환 플럭스를 모사하였다. 1952년부터 2040년까지 모사해 본 결과, 동해에서 생물펌프는 점차 강화되고 있고, 현재 0.0156 Pg C yr$^{-1}$ 정도를 해양 내부로 내보내고 있는 것으로 추정된다. 한편 동해의 해수순환은 저층수를 만드는 것이 줄어드는 반면 중앙층으로 유입이 증가하는 추세이다. 산소가 풍부한 표층수가 중앙층으로 유입되면서 유광층에서 하강한 생물입자들의 분해가 이 층에서 활발해져서 영양염을 표층으로 되돌리는 것이 강화될 것으로 보인다. 이렇게 되면 생물에 의한 탄소제거가 늘어나게 될 깃이다. 지난 50년간의 생물펌프 변화로 블 때 산업혁명 이후 생물에 의한 동해의 인류기원 이산화탄소 흡수량은 0.025 Pg C 정도로 추정된다.

Relaxin Hormone의 직접젇인 작용에 의한 돼지 유선상피세포의 발달과 세포외간 기질의 분해개조 촉진 (Direct Action of Relaxin on the Pig Mammary Glands to Promote Development of the Alveoli and Remodeling of the Extracellular Matrix)

  • 돼지에 있어서 약 115일간의 임신 기간 중 마지막 40일 동안에 유선 내에서 유액도관(duct), 분비소엽(lobules), 분비낭포(alveoli) 등의 parenchyma 조직이 현저하게 발달하게 되는데, 이는 단백질 호르몬 relaxin과 estrogen의 공동작용에 기인하여 촉진되는 것으로 알려져 있다. 최근에는 면역조직화학적 실험방법을 통해 relaxin hormone이 유선조직 세포(mammary gland parenchyma cells)에 직접적으로 작용하여 lobuloalveolar의 발달을 촉진할 수 있는 가능성을 시사하였다. 즉 Relaxin에 특이적이고 포화 가능한 Relaxin의 결합부위가 lobulo-llveolar 구조 및 유액도관(lactiferous duct)의 상피세포(epithelial cells)뿐만 아니라 혈관세포에서도 존재함을 관찰하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 유선조직 세포에 존재하는 relaxin 결합부위가 기능적으로 활성을 지닌 relaxin 수용체(functional relaxin receptor)인지를 규명하고 동시에 relaxin hormone이 유선조직 세포에 직접적으로 작용하여 lobulo-alveolar의 발달을 촉진하는 지에 대한 직접적인 증거를 제공하는 데 있다. 정상적인 생리주기를 가진 3마리의 생후 7개월 된 잡종재지에 대하여 양쪽 난소를 모두 제거하는 양측난소 절제시술(Bilateral ovariectomy)을 실시하였다.(day 0). 난소 절제시술 후 15일부터(day 15) 29일(day 29)까지 각 개체별로 estradiol benzoate(1 mg/2 ml /Com oil)를 12시간 간격으로 근육주사 하였다. 시술 후 22일째부터(day 22) 순수 정제된 relaxin을 miniature osmotic pump를 통하여 몸의 anterior end로부터 왼쪽부위의 4번째 유선에 일정한 속도(1 ug/hr)로 주입하기 시작하였으며, 동일한 개체의 오른쪽 부위의 4번째 유선에는 동일한 방업으로 생리적 식염수(대조군)을 주입하였다. 난소 절제수술 후 29일째(day 29) 각 개체를 희생하여 젖꼭지의 base로부터 1cm 떨어진 지점에서 osmotic pump의 위치로부터 가까운 parenchyma 조직 시료를 채취하여 약 5-mm cube으로 자른 다음 조직학적 분석을 위한 일반적 조직시료 처리과정을 시행하였다. 조직절편을 Weigert's iron hematoxylin과 함께 염색한 다음 Olympus AH-2 광학현미경을 이용하여 lobulo-alveolar의 발달과 세포외간 섬유사인 collagen의 밀도와 정렬정도를 조사하였다. 생리식염수로 처리된 유선조직에 있어서는 lobulo-alveolar의 발달이 거의 일어나지 못한 반면, relaxin을 처리한 유선조직은 lobulo-alveolar의 현저한 발달을 보였을 뿐만 아니라 분비낭포(alveoli) 내에서는 두드러진 분비물이 존재하였다. 또한 식염수로 처리된 유선조직에서는 비교적 조밀하고 매우 잘 발달된 collagen 섬유사 묶음을 가진 세포의 간 기질의 특징을 보였으나, relaxin 호르몬이 처리된 유선조직에서는 collagen 섬유사가 비교적 분산되어 있고 느슨하며 덜 조밀한 구조적 특징을 나타내었다. 결론적으로, 본 연구의 결과는 유선조직 내의 특이적 relaxin 결합세포가 기능적으로 활성을 지닌 relaxin 수용체를 함유하고 있으며, relaxin hormone이 유선조직 세포에 직접적으로 작용함으로써 lobulo-alveolar의 발달을 촉진함을 보여준다.
