This research focused on the effects of heavy metals on the biomonitoring activity of genetically engineered bioluminescent bacteria, Pseudomonas putida mt-2 KG1206. KG1206 was exposed to single or binary mixtures of different heavy metals as well as soils contaminated with heavy metals. In case of single exposure with different inducer pollutant, the toxicity order was as followings : As(III) > Cd, As(V) >> Cu, Cr(VI). The toxic effects of the binary mixtures was compared to the expected effect based on a simple theory of probabilities. The interactive effects were mostly additive, while in few cases antgonistic and synergistic mode of action was observed for some concentration combinations. No considerable correlation was found between the total metal contents in soils and the bioluminescence activity of each sample. However, statistically significant differences (p = 0.0102) were observed between two groups, classified based on arsenite contamination. These results demonstrate the usage of recombinant bioluminescent microorganism in biomonitoring and the complex interactive effects of metals.
The mixtures which are in the chemical composition of Portland cement were prepared from oyster shell, casting dust and BOF slag. The clinkerbility and the behaviour of formation of clinker minora]s were studied using the mixtures mainly by the mineral and microstructural observation. By virtue of the characteristics of starting raw materials, the clinkering temperature was lower as much as 100$^{\circ}C$ than that of a mixture prepared from normal raw materials. Uncombined calcium oxide was vanished entirely below 1350$^{\circ}C$. and the formation of major cement minerals such as alite and belite could be nearly accomplished without too much liquid phase within 1400$^{\circ}C$.
Korea is one of the typical rice eating countries where availability of animal protein is limited even for the growing generation. Nutritive food products for infants and children are not available commercially in large scale at the present time, although a limited amount of expensive milk products are produced. The present study deals with a pioneering attempt on a new food mixture to meet this demand. Several food mixtures, possibly produced in the country, consisting of rice, soybean, FPC, vitamin, minerals and other food additives are developed in this work Sixty female and male rats aged $30{\sim}40$ days were divided into five groups, twelve rats each. The rats had been maintained with the six different diets, as follow. Formulation of proposed infant food mixturesComposition F-R-1 F-S-2 F-F-3 F-P-4 S Rice 100% 40% 37% 46% 70% Sugar - 12 13 10 70 Casein - - - - 20 Bean - 40 37 24 - Yeast - 3 2 3 - Mineral Vitamain - 2 4 2 4.3 F.P.C - 3 4 7 - Fat - - 4 8 4 Cod liver Oil - - - - 3 The findings of this study presented in FER, PER, final organ weights, body weights growth, percentage of nitrogen retention in the body. F-P-4 group tended to remain the heaviest and F-R-1 the lightest in the body weight among three groups throughout the experimental period. In terms of FER (Feed Efficiency Ratio) and PER (Prortein E. R.) value, F-P-4 group kept the highest record throughout. F-P-4 group showed the highest value of nitrogen retention in the body. In comparision between F-P-4 groups and casein 20% group (standard) in all respects of this experiment, F-P-4 group which is the most superior among experimental group, revealed statisfically no significant inferior than that of standard group. This fact could be interpreted that most limiting a. a., methionine in the soy protein produced little inferiority of the experimental groups in the study.
In this study, performance of 2 pure hydrocarbons and 3 mixtures was measured in an attempt to substitute R22 under 3 different temperature conditions. The mixtures were composed of R1270(propylene), R290(propane) and R152a. They were tested in a refrigerating bench tester with a hermetic rotary compressor The test bench provided about 3.5 kW capacity and water and water/glycol mixture were employed as the secondary heat transfer fluids. All tests were conducted under the same external conditions resulting in the average saturation temperatures of $7^{\circ}C/45^{\circ}C$ and $-7^{\circ}C/41^{\circ}C$ and $-21^{\circ}C/28^{\circ}C$ in the evaporator and condenser, respectively. Test results show that the coefficient of performance (COP) of these refrigerants is up to 11.54% higher than that of R22 in all temperature conditions. Compressor discharge temperatures were reduced by $14{\sim}31^{\circ}C$ with these fluids. There was no problem with mineral oil since the mixtures were mainly composed of hydrocarbons. The amount of charge was reduced up to 58% as compared to R22. Overall, these fluids provide good performance with reasonable energy savings without any environmental problem and thus can be used as long term alternatives for residential air-conditioning and heat pumping application.
This study was conducted to determine the effect of root zone cooling on growth and quality of turfgrasses including Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.‘Nuglade’), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.‘Accent’), tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.‘Pixie’), and Japanese lawngrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) in simulated athletic field during summer season in Korea. Mineral contents in clippings of turfgrasses grown at different soil mixtures and temperatures were also analyzed. Root zone cooling (approximately 4~6$^{\circ}C$ lower than that of untreated-control) resulted in good uniformity, little disease incidence and higher level of chlorophyll contents in cool-season turfgrasses. The effectiveness of root zone cooling in protecting disease incidence from high temperature stress was the most manifest in perennial ryegrass compared to others. Fresh clipping weight in treatment of root zone cooling was increased approximately 2 times in Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass, and 2.5 times in tall fescue compared to those of control. There was higher growth rate in a soil mixture composed of 80% peat moss +10% sand +10% soil (v/v/v) than in that of 80% pea moss +20% sand (v/v), Mineral contents of N, P, K, Ca, and Mg in clippings of three species of cool-season turfgrasses were significantly increased in treat-ment of root zone cooling but this was not found in Japanese lawngrass. Results showed that root zone cooling has a benefit in keeping good quality and growth of cool-season turfgrasses in sports field under supraoptimal ambient temperature during summer season.
β'-Sialon with different compositions was synthesized by the carbothermal reduction-nitridation of compacts containing kaolin graphite and silicon or aluminum at temperature of 1300-1450℃ under flowing gas of 90% N2-10% H2 or 20hrs. Quantitative analysis of minerals which were formed in the specimens was carried out by using the calibration curve which has been prepared from X-ray diffraction patterns. The obtained results were as follows : 1. In the formation of β'-Sialon by carbothermal reduction-nutridation of Si-Al-O-C system mixtures at 1400℃ for 20hrs. (2) β'-Sialon as a major mineral and α-Al2O3 as a minor mineral were identified in the specimen which was prepared of kaolin and graphite. (3)α-Al2O3 and 15R as a minor minerals were measured in the specimen which was prepared of kaolin aluminum and graphite. (4) AlN instead of α-Al2O3 and 15R was formed in the compacts that excess graphite(=35 wt%) was added to the mixture of kaolin and aluminium. 2. As the reaction time and temperature were increased the formation of β'-Sialon was increased whereas the phases of mllite SiC and Si2ON2 were decreased gradually.
Mineral filler is used for resin compounds, because it increases the stiffness and thermal stability of a resin compound, and it also cuts down the cost. Calcium carbonate, silica, magnesium oxide, and others are used as filler materials in general, and the type of filler material, the size, and content can affect the physical properties of compounds. Those factors also influence the viscosity of resin mixtures and the workability, and should be adjusted by changing the contents of the filler, which depends on the size. In this study, five kinds of ground calcium carbonate, which were different in size, were used to produce polyester compounds ; the physical properties were compared with the filler size and contents. The mechanical properties were measured by bending strength and tensile strength, and the heat deflection temperature was obtained for thermal stability.

Advanced argillic, argillic, and phyllic zones are the most important alteration patterns to predict the hidden ore body during exploration of hydrothermal deposits. We examined the quantitative relationship between the spectral absorption characteristics and the mineral content of the synthetic mixtures such as alunite-kaolinite and illite-kaolinite using short wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectroscopy. In the alunite-kaolinite mixtures, the spectral absorption characteristics of the alunite was highly correlated with the Hull quotient reflectance(0.99) and the kaolinite had the highest correlation with the Gaussian peak(0.92). Illite-kaolinite mixtures are essential for Gaussian deconvolution because of the overlap of absorption region. Illite and kaolinite mixtures indicate the high correlation of 0.93 and 0.98, respectively. The error ranges in the alunite-kaolinite(8%) and illite-kaolinite mixtures(5%) derived from SWIR were smaller than the ones(29% and 26%) obtained from X-ray diffraction(Rietveld) analysis. These results show that SWIR spectroscopic analysis is more reliable than XRD Rietveld analysis in terms of quantification of allowed minerals.
For the separation of aluminum and iron from platinum mixtures, extraction resins were synthesized and separation efficiencies were compared with those by commercial one, $P_{204}$. During synthesis, the suspension polymerization method was adopted with D2EHPA as an extractant. Also, benzoyl peroxide as a starter was divided into 3parts and injected for the uniform size and dispersion of resin particles. Comparison tests resulted in 100% separation of Fe and Pt for both synthetic and $P_{204}$ resins. In case of Al and Pt, synthetic and $P_{204}$ resin gave extraction efficiencies of 99.9% and 98.9%, respectively. Difference in extractant contents of synthetic resin(61.8%) and $P_{204}$(60%) was considered to give differences in separation efficiencies of aluminum and iron elements. For both resins, separation efficiencies of Al and Fe increased up to $55^{\circ}C$. According to FT-IR analyses of both resins, specific peaks of D2EHPA and crosslinked polystyrene were identified at the wavenumber of $1000cm^{-1}$ and $2900cm^{-1}$ respectively.

The corrosion of reinforcement induced by chloride ingress is the main deterioration cause of coastal reinforced concrete structures. In this paper, an experimental study was executed to investigate the effect of the kinds and replacement ratios of mineral admixtures (fly-ash, ground granulated blast-furnace slag silica fume and meta-kaolin), W/B and curing time on chloride diffusion of concrete by long-time immersion test in chloride solution. According to the result, the use of mineral admixtures was effective in improving the resistant to chloride ingress. The chloride penetration depth and diffusion coefficient were decreased as replacement ratios of mineral admixture were increased. The kind and replacement ratio of the mineral admixture are more important than the W/B in reducing the chloride diffusion of concrete. Chloride binding capacity of mineral admixture, which was sequenced in the order of MK
