Computer Program for Mineral Identification (CPMI) (광물감별을 위한 컴퓨터프로그램 개발)

  • Recently computers are transforming our classroom by means of initiating and expanding teaching and learning. Lloyd (1989) indicates that computers show great promise in a way augmenting the classroom instructional process under the guidance of the teacher. In this paper computer program for mineral identification (called CPMI) is introduced. This program is is to provide a short list of 26 minerals. These mineras are classified using some properties for mineral identification that is color, streak, hardness, specific gravity, luster, and crystal form. Mineral properties can be divided into two groups for operating this program: (1) properties with numeric values, that is hardness and specific gravity; (2) properties whith a single word, that is color, streak, luster, and crystal form.

The Influencing Factors of the Compliance Level with Therapeutic Regimen after the Bone Mineral Densitometry (골밀도 검사 후 치료지시 이행정도에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: This study was to identify the influencing factors of the compliance level to a therapeutic regimen after a bone mineral densitometry test. Method: The sample for the study was 95 people who took the bone mineral densitometry test from March, 2002 to July, 2002. Data was collected by mail using aself reporting questionnaire on the selected variables such as the compliance level, self efficacy, health locus of control, susceptibility, severity, usefulness, barrier, and self esteem. Results: The average compliance level was 63.93. Through multiple regression, three independent variables including chance health locus of control on personality, the result of bone mineral density and self-efficacy were entered in the model as the significant determinants of the compliance level after a bone mineral densitometry test. The coefficients of determination of each variable were 10.9%, 8.3% and 8.1% respectively. Conclusion: The identification of the determinants of the compliance level to the therapeutic regimen after bone mineral densitometry is expected to contribute to the development of an intervention program to improve the compliance level to the therapeutic regimen in osteoporosis patients.

Formation Identification using Anisotropic Parameters from Sonic and Density Logs (음파검층과 밀도검층 자료에서 산출된 이방성 변수를 이용한 지층 구분)

  • For the formation identification, surface geological survey, drill core analysis, core description and well log analysis are widely used. Among them well log analysis is a popular method with drill core analysis, since it measures continuously physical properties at in-situ. In this study we calculated Thomsen anisotropic parameters (${\varepsilon},\;{\delta},\;{\eta}$) after applying Backus averaging method to the P wave velocity, S wave velocity, and density logs. The well log data application of Blackfoot, Canada, shows the formation could be divided by 12 layers. This shows that Thomsen anisotropic parameters for identifying formation using anisotropic parameters is useful if there is no natural gamma log that is widely used for the formation identification.

Studies on Identification and Enumeration of Soil Microorganisms in Mineral and Volcanic Ash Soil of the Jeju Island (제주도(濟州道) 화산회토양(火山灰土壤)의 미생물상(微生物相)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • A laboratory experiment was conducted to find out the number of soil microorganisms, identification and enumeration of soil microbial species on the mineral and volcanic ash soil with different cropping system of the Jeju Island. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The number of bacteria was high in mineral soil with rotation of upland crops than that of volcanic ash soil with continuous cropping system. 2. According to identification of soil bacteria, the most of bacteria were composed to short rod with Gram negative. Among the bacteria species, Rhizobium spp. and Flavobacterium spp. were most high population in both of mineral and volcanic ash soil. 3. The number of fungi in mineral soils were reduced by the rotated cultivation of upland crops but no significant differences were observed in volcanic ash soil with continuous cropping system. On the other hand, Aspergillus spp., Fusarium spp., and Penicillium spp. were most high population in both of mineral and volcanic ash soil. 4. Comparing of the number and species ot microorganism to the cash crops soil in main land, about 10 to 100 times for bacteria and more than two times for the number and species of fungi were lowered in Jeju Island soil.

Factors Affecting Bone Mineral Density of the Femur in Parkinson's Disease Patients (파킨슨병 환자의 골밀도 영향요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the level of bone mineral densities of the femur neck and to identify factors affecting bone mineral density of the femur in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Methods: Participants were 121 PD patients visiting the outpatient clinic of D University Hospital in B City. Bone mineral density was measured at the femur neck by using a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. The serum vitamin D level, the amounts of milk intake, caffeine intake, cigaret smoking, and alcohol consumption, and the number of steps taken daily were measured. Past and present disease history, the medication history, and duration of the disease were also collected. The level of disability was obtained by neurologists using the Hoehn and Yahr stage and the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale. Results: Among PD patients, 57% had osteopenia and 15.7% had osteoporosis. The bone mineral density of the femur was associated with weight, serum vitamin D level, age, and working status. Conclusion: The identification of weight and serum vitamin D level as important predictive factors emphasizes the importance of balanced nutrition for PD patients.

  • A total of one hundred and twenty three goldbearing mineral deposits in the Charters Towers area west of Townswille, Queensland, Australia were initially classified into four named and unnamed separate vein styles, with different trends and alteration patterns, a breccia-style deposit and placer gold deposits. The area has vein deposits in Ordovician and Silurian granitoids and breccia-style in the Carboniferous volcanics. In this paper a modeling of these deposits is described using geological mapping, landscape analysis and digital imagery (Landsat TM and geophysics) to improve the classification and identification of possible new target for exploration.

Bone Mineral Density and Breast Cancer Risk Factors among Premenopausal and Postmenopausal Women - A Systematic Review

  • Background: Bone mineral density (BMD) is a lifetime marker of estrogen in a woman's body and has been associated with increased breast cancer risk. Nonetheless the actual association is still debatable. Furthermore, estrogen is very crucial in maintaining human bone density and gradually decreases over age. A systematic search was conducted to assess any association of BMD with breast cancer risk factors among premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Materials and Methods: Review identification was performed through databases searching on MEDLINE, CINAHL and SCOPUS and 19 qualified studies were elected. The keywords used were "bone mineral density", "breast cancer", and "breast density". Results: A total of 19 articles showed variation with the majority of the studies focused on postmenopausal and a few focused on premenopausal women. Overall there was no concensus on effects. Conclusions: An enormous effort is being undertaken by researchers to prove that BMD might be one of the significant risk factors for breast cancer.

Possibility about Application and Interpretation of Surface Nondestructive X-ray Diffraction Method for Cultural Heritage Samples by Material (유형별 문화재 시료의 비파괴 표면 X-선 회절분석법 적용과 해석 가능성)

  • Preservation of the original form is the principle for conservation, management and utilization of cultural heritages. Thus, non-destructive analysis of these samples are important field of the conservation science. In this study, examined the applicability of nondestructive surface X-ray diffraction analysis (ND-XRD) for cultural heritage by materials (rock specimen, jade stone, pigment painted specimen, earthen artifact, metal artifact). In result, all type of sample is recorded suitable X-ray diffraction patterns for identifying mineral composition in case of surface condition with adequate particle size and arrangement. And diffraction pattern is reflected surface information than matrix. Therefore, ND-XRD is thought to be applicable not only mineral identification but also interpretation of manufacturing technique and alteration trend about layered sample (in horizontally or vertically). Whereas some exceptional diffraction patterns were recorded due to overlapping information on specific crystal planes. It caused by skip the sample treatment (powdering and randomly orientation). It could be advantageously used for mineral identification, such as preferred orientation of clay minerals. In contrast, irregular diffraction pattern caused by single crystalline effect is required careful evaluation.

  • The development of methods for the identification of irradiated foods helps enforce national and international regulations on labelling to ensure the consumer's free choice to buy irradiated or unirradiated foods. and the availabilityof such methods may assist the promotion of international trade in irradiated food products and help prevent abuse of the technology. A number of approaches to determine the physical , chemical, microbiological and biological changes that occur in foods treated with ionizing radiation have been studied. However no single method is universally applicable. Among physical measurements, the leading methods of indentification are electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and thermoluminescence(TL). ESR is an established non-destructive method for the analysis of free radicals from their traps and TL is the emission of light from irradiated mineral extracts by heating. Viscosity of carbohydrate polymers by causing chain breaks by irradiation, measuring the impedance of potatoes and detection of gases produced radiolytically are promising techniques for identification purposes. Irradiated water-containing foods show significant supercooling when monitored with a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), which can be applied to identifying irradiated ones.
