Potential Antioxidant Trace Mineral (Zn, Mn, Cu and Fe) Concentrations Measured by Biochemical Indices in South Koreans

  • The concern of the antioxidant micronutrient status in normal healthy people, including antioxidant trace minerals such as Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe and Se is focused since systemic oxidation is involved in various chronic diseases. In the present study, we evaluated the concentration of trace minerals (Cu, Zn, Mn, and Fe) which are considered as potential antioxidant minerals in plasma, red blood cells (RBCs) and urine in normal healthy Korean subjects. The 760 subjects (male 341, female 419; mean age 54.2 $\pm$ 18.9) were recruited from the rural, urban and metropolitan city in South Korea. Dietary intake was evaluated using 24-hours recall for general major nutrient intake assessment. The trace elements (Cu, Zn, Mn, and Fe) concentrations in plasma, RBCs, and urine were measured by inductively coupled plasma spectrophotometer (ICP) and atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Cu and Zn levels in plasma, RBCs and urine in normal healthy South Koreans were within the normal range of those mineral levels, but Mn and Fe levels were higher compared to the normal range of those mineral levels. None of the selected trace mineral levels in plasma and RBC's was lower than the normal range value. The results showed that Zn and Cu levels in plasma and RBC's in Korean were within the normal range, and plasma and urinary Mn and Fe levels were higher than the normal reference values. Potential antioxidant trace mineral (Cu, Mn, Zn and Fe) levels in Koreans are within or a bit higher than the normal range.

Cloud Generation Using a Huge Vertical Mine

  • In order to study the characteristics of cloud, a real-scale experiment for cloud generation was carried out using an extinct vertical mine (430 m height) located in the northeastern Honshu, Japan. The dry particles generated from the three-step concentrations of NaCl solutions were used for cloud generation. The number size distributions of initial dry particles and cloud droplets were monitored by Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) and Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP) at bottom and upper sites of pit, respectively. The polymeric water absorbent film (PWAF) method was employed to measure liquid water content ($W_L$) as a function of droplet size. Moreover the chemical properties of individual droplet replicas were determined by micro-PIXE. The CCN number concentration shows the lognormal form in dependence of the particle size, while the number size distributions of droplets are bimodal showing the peaks around $9{\mu}m$ and $20{\mu}m$ for every case. In comparison to background mineral particles, right shifting of size distribution line for NaCl particles was occurred. When NaCl solutions with three-step different concentrations were neulized, $W_L$ shows the strong droplet size dependence. It varied from $10.0mg\;m^{-3}$ up to $13.6mg\;m^{-3}$ with average $11.6mg\;m^{-3}$. A good relationship between $W_L$ and cloud droplet number concentration was obtained. Both chemical inhomogeneities (mixed components with mineral and C1) and homogeneities (only mineral components or C1) in individual droplet replicas were obviously observed from micro-PIXE elemental images.

  • The heavy metal effects on the degradation of fluorene by Sphingobacterium sp. KM-02 was determined in liquid cultures. The results showed that 10 mg/L cadmium, copper, zinc, and lead not only affected the growth of KM-02 with fluorene but also the ability of growing or resting cells to degrade this compound. Growth and fluorene degradation were strongly inhibited by cadmium and copper at 10 mg/L, while the inhibitory effect of zinc and lead at the same concentration or at 100 mg/L were not significant. In contrast, arsenic did not affect degradation or growth, even at very high concentrations of 100 mg/L. Subsequent analyses additionally revealed that concentrations of arsenic remained unchanged following incubation, while those of cadmium and copper decreased significantly.

금왕 금·은광산 주변 지구화학적 환경에서의 중금속 원소들의 분산 (Dispersion of Heavy Metals in the Geochemical Environment around the Geumwang Gold-Silver Mine)

  • Soil, tailings, stream sediment and surface water samples collected in the vicinity of the Geumwang Au-Ag mine were analyzed in order to investigate the pollution level of heavy metals and to determine the dispersion patterns. Although the maximum concentrations of soils collected at the flotation plant and tailings dam were 9,270 ppm As, 17 ppm Cd, 1,480 ppm Cu, 10,080 ppm Pb and 18,400 ppm Zn, dispersion of heavy metals were limited in the vicinity of the flotation plant and tailings dam. This may be due to high pH values (> 8.0) of the soils by flotation solution for mineral processing. The pH values of water samples near the flotation plant and tailings dam were over 8.0 and Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations were not detected. The waters in the vicinity of Geumwang mine generally belong to a $Ca^{2+}-SO_{4}{^{2-}}$ $(HCO_3{^-})$ type.

춘천지역 일부 주민들의 먹는물 중 미량금속 및 무기 음이온에 대한 노출 (Exposure of Selected Chuncheon Residents to Trace Metals and Inorganic Anions in Drinking Water)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the distribution of the concentrations of selected trace metals and inorganic anions in five types of drinking water samples (mineral spring water, well water, small community water, municipal tap water, and commercial mineral water) collected from Chuncheon, Gangwon-do in 2007. Forty four samples were analyzed for five metals and five anions using an atomic absorption spectrometer and an ion chromatograph, respectively. Arsenic (As) and nitrate (${NO_3}^-$) concentrations in some groundwater samples did not meet the future (10 ${\mu}g/L$) and current (44 mg/L) Korean drinking water standards, respectively. On the other hand, any municipal tap water samples, the sources of which were lake surface water, satisfied the Korean standards. Human health risk assessment results showed that arsenic in all types of water, especially groundwater including commercial mineral water, may pose both noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic effects on the residents. It is concluded that groundwater is not safe drinking water any longer and that a national survey and follow-up measures need to be taken.

인조광물섬유 제품 제조 및 취급 근로자의 공기중 섬유 노출 평가 및 노동부 노출기준 고찰 (Workers' Exposure to Airborne Fibers in the Man-made Mineral Fibers Producing and Using Industries)

  • In this study, occupational exposures to man-made mineral fibers (MMMFs) including glass wool, rock wool, and continuous glass filament fibers were determined and evaluated on the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Value (TLV). A total of 171 personal samples collected from 4 glass wool fiber, 2 rock wool fibers, 4 continuous filament glass fiber products manufacturing and a glass fiber and rock wool insulations using industries, and determined respirable fibers concentrations using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Method 7400, "B counting rule. The fiber concentrations of samples from workers installing thermal insulations in a MMMF using industry showed the highest value: geometric mean (GM) = 0.73 f/cc and maximum = 2.9 f/cc, 70% of them were above the TLV, 1 f/cc. Workers' exposure level (GM= 0.032 f/cc) in the rock wool manufacturing industries was significantly higher than those of glass wool (GM=0.012 f/cc) and continuous filament glass fibers (GM=0.010 f/cc) manufacturing industries (p<0.01). No samples were more than the TLV in the MMMF manufacturing industries. There was a significant difference among companies in airborne fiber levels.

치과용(齒科用) 순(純) 타이타늄 스크랩을 재활용(再活用)한 Ti-6Al-4V 합금(合金)의 제조(製造) 및 산소(酸素) 제어(制御) (Preparation and oxygen control of Ti-6Al-4V alloys by recycling dental pure Ti scraps)

  • 본 연구는 치과용 순 타이타늄 스크랩을 재활용하여 진공 아크 용해에 의해 Ti-6Al-4V 합금을 제조하였고, 이때 산소함량이 다르게 제조된 Ti-6A1-4V 합금의 물성을 평가하였다. 사용된 타이타늄 스크랩은 치과용 임플란트 재료로써 ASTM G1~G4 등급으로 산소함량이 다르게 진공 아크 용해에 의해 건전한 잉곳을 만든 후 Ti-6Al-4V 합금을 제조하였다. 합금 제조시 875 torr의 가압 아르곤 분위기에서 용해하였을 때 Al 조성의 손실이 방지됨을 확인하였다. 제조된 Ti-6Al-4V의 산소함량이 1170~3340 ppm으로 증가함에 따라 Ti-6Al-4V의 경도가 증가하여 순 타이타늄의 경향과 동일함을 확인하였다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해서 Ti-6Al-4V 합금 제조에 있어서 진공 아크 용해에 의해 치과용 순 타이타늄 스크랩의 재활용 가능성을 확인하였다.

광미-물 상호반응에서 반응시간이 중금속 용출에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Kinetics on the Leaching Behavior of Heavy Metals in Tailings-Water Interaction)

  • 이번 연구는 광미시료를 대상으로 반응시간(1, 2, 4, 7, 14, 21 및 30일)과 반응용액의 pH(1, 3 및 5)를 달리하여 실내 용출실험을 실시하였다. pH 5와 pH 3의 반응용액과의 용출실험에서는 반응 2일 후 최종 pH가 4.6-6.1 혹은 2.8-3.5로 안정화되었으며, 반응시간이 지남에 따라 점진적으로 낮아졌다. 황산염 농도와 산도는 7일 이후 증가하는 것이 관찰되었는데, 이는 황화광물의 산화작용때문인 것으로 판단된다 pH 5와 pH 3에서 용출된 Pb 함량은 반응기 간(1-30일) 동안 뚜렷한 변화가 보이지 않은 반면에 Zn, Cd 및 Cu는 시간이 지남에 따라 용출함량이 증가하는 경향을 보였다. 반응용액 pH 1에서의 용출특성은 Zn 형태(Zn, Cd, 및 Cu)와 Pb 형태(Pb)로 구분되었다. Zn 형태는 시간에 따라 용출함량이 증가되었고, 이는 지속적인 용해작용에 의한 것이다. Pb 형태는 시간에 따라 용출농도가 감소하였으며, 이는 황산염의 용출함량이 높아짐에 따라 용해된 Pb가 앵글레사이트(anglesit)로 침전됨을 지시한다. 높은 황산염 농도는 Fe, Zn, 및 Cd의 높은 용출함량과 밀접한 관련이 있다. 이들 용출실험 결과 Zn과 Cd의 용출과 산도는 광산주변 환경의 지표수와 지하수 수질에 악영향을 주는 요인이 될 수 있다. 용출반응에서 kinetics 문제는 광미가 빗물과 반응하여 유출수에서의 중금속 농도를 증가시킬 수 있는 중요한 요인이 된다.

이천 화강암지역 지하수의 우라늄과 라돈 함량 특성 (Uranium and Radon Concentrations in Groundwater near the Icheon Granite)

  • 국내 화강암지역 지하수의 우라늄과 라돈 함량의 범위와 특성 파악을 위하여 이천지역 74개 지하수를 조사한 결과 우라늄 함량은 $0.02{\sim}1,640.0\;{\mu}g/L$ (중앙값 2.03 ${\mu}g/L$), 라돈 함량은 40~23,400 pCi/L (중앙값 4,649 pCi/L)으로 나타났다. 74개 지하수 중 8개인 10.8%에서 미국 EPA의 우라늄 기준치(30 ${\mu}g/L$)를 초과하였다. 라돈은 44개인 59.5%에서 미국의 음용 제안치(AMCL)인 4,000 pCi/L를 초과하였고 핀란드의 음용 제안치인 8,100 pCi/L를 초과하는 시료는 전체의 13.5%인 10개이다. U-$HCO_3$ (0.71), U-Ca (0.69), U-Li (0.45), U-Sr (0.43), U-F (0.42)를 제외하고는 우라늄(라돈)과 주요 성분간의 상관성은 없는 것으로 나타났다. 연구지역 지하수의 우라늄과 라돈 함량은 유사한 지질을 가지는 외국에 비교하면 낮은 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 천부 지하수의 공내 유입으로 인해서 실제 함량보다 낮게 검출되었을 가능성이 크다.

Changes in the Mineral Components in Cheese Juice (Aqueous Phase of Cheese) during Ripening

  • Four different types of cheeses were measure detailed changes in the mineral concentrations of cheese-serum during ripening. Concentrations of minerals in cheese juice were measured. The pH value using the low pH method (LPM) cheese was significantly (p<0.05) lower than that of other cheeses. Similarly the total Ca, S, Mg, and P contents of LPM cheese were significantly lower in than those of other cheeses. Ca, S, Mg, and P remained in colloidal form, while other minerals were mostly in soluble forms after 1 day. The minerals associated with the structure of cheese (i.e., casein or colloidal calcium phosphate) remained largely insoluble even after 1 month of ripening.
