The Influence of Communication, Resilience, Mental health on Military Adjustment of Soldiers in the Rear Air Force (후방 공군 병사의 의사소통, 회복탄력성, 정신건강이 군 적응에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was designed to investigate the factors that influence soldiers' military adjustment in the rear air force. The data were collected through a survey of 160 soldiers in N city from Nov. 16th to Dec. 11th, 2015, using appropriate instruments to assess their military adjustment, type of communication, resilience and mental health, and analyzed using IBM SPSS WIN 21. The mean scores for military adjustment, resilience, mental well-being and disorder were $1.25{\pm}0.33$, $3.69{\pm}0.56$, $2.98{\pm}0.94$ and $1.24{\pm}0.36$, respectively. In the analysis of their general characteristics, there were significant differences in age, perceived health and future career. Significantly positive correlations were found between adjustment and placating, blaming and irrelevant communication and mental disorder and significantly negative correlations were found between adjustment and resilience and mental well-being. Mental disorder and blaming communication accounted for 41% of the variance in the military adjustment. The result of this study shows that soldiers' military adjustment is related to mental disorder and blaming communication.

The Effects of Cognitive Behavioral Anger Management Program on Self-consciousness and Anger in Korean Military Man (인지행동적 분노관리 프로그램이 군인의 자의식과 분노에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate a cognitive behavioral anger management intervention in order to increase self-consciousness and decrease anger among Korean military men, Methods: A quasi-experimental design was used for this study. Ninety two soldiers were screened for unhealthy anger expression using a questionnaire. Among them, 26 soldiers who showed unhealthy anger expression were selected for this study. They were matched by rank and assigned to either a treatment or control group. The treatment group received the intervention three consecutive times, once a week and for 120 minutes per session. Participants were assessed before and after the intervention for anger (the State-Trait Anger Scale) and self-consciousness (Self-consciousness Scale). Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, $x^2-test$, Mann-Whitney test, and Wilcox on signed rank test. Results: There was no statistically significant decrease in anger or increase in self-consciousness between the two groups following treatment. However, there was a significant increase in private self-consciousness in the treatment group after the intervention(p=.006). Conclusion: The cognitive behavioral anger management program improves private self-consciousness in soldiers. However, Additional research is needed to explore whether long-term intervention is more effective for anger control in the military setting. The findings from this study suggest that more attention should be given to mental health care for Korean soldiers.

Effectiveness of the Military Mental Health Promotion Program (군 정신건강증진 프로그램의 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was done to evaluate the Military Mental Health Promotion Program. The program was an email based cognitive behavioral intervention. Methods: The research design was a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Participants were 32 soldiers who agreed to participate in the program. Data were collected at three different times from January 2012 to March 2012; pre-test, post-test, and a one-month follow-up test. The data were statistically analyzed using SPSS 18.0. The effectiveness of the program was tested by repeated measures ANOVA. Results: The first hypothesis that the level of depression in the experimental group who participated in the program would decrease compared to the control group was not supported in that the difference in group-time interaction was not statistically significant (F=2.19, p=.121). The second and third hypothesis related to anxiety and self-esteem were supported in group-time interaction, respectively (F=7.41, p=.001, F=11.67, p<.001). Conclusion: Results indicate that the program is effective in improving soldiers' mental health status in areas of anxiety and self-esteem.

  • Purpose : This study attempted to find out the relationship between leadership style, knowledge transfer in nursing officers' job, considering the task characteristics. Methods : The data were collected from the military hospital during November 1st to November 17th, 2008 using a structured questionnaire and analyzed with the statistical method of frequency, correlation, and regression analysis, in SPSS 12.0 program package. Results/Conclusion : The results of empirical analysis shows that the levels of job tension and job focused task domain affect the job characteristics of the nursing officers' organization. The job characteristics have a moderating effect on the relationship between leadership style and knowledge transfer. The research is very useful in finding out the job characteristics which well depict military nursing organizations. This research suggests that a desirable leadership styles affect the knowledge transfer in the job characteristics type.

The Influence of Ego-resilience, Positive affect, Negative affect on military life stress in ROK air force soldiers (공군 병사의 자아탄력성, 정적 정서, 부적 정서가 군 생활 스트레스에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is the descriptive research tried in order to identify how the air force soldier's ego-resilience, positive affect, negative affect of air force soldiers on their military life stress. and a survey was conducted targeting 321 air force soldiers. The results of this study found that the subjects average scores in terms of ego-resilience, positive affect, negative affect, military life stress were 3.11, 3.16, 2.26 and 1.94 points, respectively. The factors of ego-resilience and positive affect showed significantly positive correlation, but the factors of negative affect and military life stress showed some negative correlation. The ego-resilience indirectly influence on the subjects' military life stress through the positive and the negative affect, not directly influenced on them. And the positive and the negative affects directly influenced on the subjects' military life stress. Therefore it needs to reduce soldiers' military life stress by developing a program to enhance soldiers' ego-resilience and to do more positive emotional experiences.

Knowledge regarding Cervical Cancer, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Intention for Vaccination among the Personnel in Korean Military Service (병사들의 자궁경부암, 인유두종 바이러스(HPV)에 대한 지식 및 백신 접종 의향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate knowledge of cervical cancer, HPV and intention for vaccination in Korean soldiers on active duty. Methods: Participants were 494 army men aged 18 to 26 serving in D area. Knowledge of cervical cancer was measured using the 8 item scale developed by Han et al. (2007) and knowledge of HPV was measured using the 13 item scale developed by Pitts et al. (2009). Collected data were analyzed with t-test, $x^2$-test, and ANOVA. Results: Mean scores for cervical cancer and HPV knowledge were $6.03{\pm}1.52$ and $8.15{\pm}1.75$ respectively and vaccination intention was 75.6%. HPV vaccination intention had significant differences depending on knowledge about cervical cancer (${\chi}^2=12.76$, p=.001), and HPV (${\chi}^2=9.00$, p=.003), education (${\chi}^2=12.24$, p=.002), sexual intercourse after first meeting (${\chi}^2=11.79$, p=.003), and sexual education in the military service (${\chi}^2=12.27$, p=.001). Conclusion: When planning education program for men in military service, it is necessary to consider include content to increase knowledge of cervical cancer and HPV.

Factors associated with Behavior Problems of Military Children in Elementary School (초등학생 군인 자녀의 문제행동 관련요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate predictors of behavior problems of military children in elementary school. Methods: Participants were 195 military children who were attending D-elementary school in C-city. Data were collected from July 8 to July 10, 2013, using self-report questionnaires which included Han's Externalized Behavior Problems Scale, Lee's Parent's Rearing Attitude Scale, and Hong's Friend/Teacher Support Appraisal Scale. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program, which included the t-test, the one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and the multiple liner regression analysis. Results: The mean score of the subjects' behavior problem was 1.47/5.0 points. The degree of the score is similar to or slightly lower than that of ordinary children. There were statistically significant differences in behavior problems according to gender, grade, birth order and economic status. Behavior problems have a negative correlation with parent's rearing attitude, parent-child relationship, teacher's support, and friend's support. Influencing factors of behavior problems were teacher's support, father-child relationship, and mother's rearing attitude, which explained 20.6% of the variance. Conclusion: The finding of this study suggests there is a need to increase teacher's support for elementary students and to educate parents to improve their parenting skills by developing proper school health programs.

An Analysis of Nursing Managerial Competencies;Military Hospital Head Nurses (병동선임간호장교의 간호관리역량 격차분석과 원인조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the gap between need-level and demonstration-level in nursing managerial competencies. In addition, the study proposes solutions to narrow this gap. The results of this study are as follows : 1) The mean score for need-level of each item was 4.0, and for demonstration-level, 3.5. This indicates that military hospital head nurses demonstrate a higher level of managerial competencies than the moderate level on all items. But items which were related to resource/ cost/ information managament, staff development management and professionalism management got relatively low ratings in the need-level. 2) The mean score for need-level of each category was 4.14, and for demonstration-level, 3.53. Categories on the individual dimension got a higher rating than categories on the group or organization dimension in both need-level and demonstration level. 3) The gap between need-level and demonstration-level appeared in all items(p<.05) and categories(p<.001). Although the gap was relatively low, it indicates that it is essential to plan a developmemt program for all nursing management competencies for military hospital head nurses. 4) There were significant differences in the gap between need-level and demonstration-level according to specific characteristics of the subjects. The gap did not appear in many categories on the individual dimension where the number of nursing staff was more than 10, a major grade, ICU head nurse or for head nurses having a long career. 5) Need-level and demonstration-level showed a difference according to specific characteristics of the subjects, because need-level and demonstration-level were higher where the number of nursing staff was more than 10, a major grade, and for ICU or Medical ward head nurses. The categories which showed need-level difference and demonstration-level differences according to specific characteristics of the subjects existed almostly completely in the group and organization dimension. Gap-level differences according to the number of hospital bed existed in only two categories. 6) The general causes of the gap were indicated to be 'Knowledge/ skill/ experience deficit', 'Limitation of rules and systems/ Inappropriate organizational environment' for most items, categories, and dimensions. The results of this study indicate that extensive competency developing strategies must be developed, because a gap was found in all items and categories. Specially, there is a need to concentrate attention on competencies in the group and organizational dimension which had a wider gap level. And it is important to take an individual approach according to the cause for each gap. In order to produce effective competency developing strategies, top managers must have sinsights into the importance of nursing staff development and nursing officer's efforts to develop themselves must be achieved. Further multi-dimensional(education, personnel-policy, nursing/ organizational environment) solutions to the gap must be developed and utilized.

A Study on Stress and Symptoms of Stress in Soldiers in the Army (병사의 지각된 스트레스와 스트레스 반응에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to measure the level of stress and symptoms of stress (SOS) in soldiers and to investigate the factors that have effects on the symptoms of stress. Methods: Data was collected from soldiers of two military units located in north Kyounggi-Do from August 2 to 9, 2006 by using the survey instruments. Results: This research found that the average values on the level of stress and symptoms of stress were about $2.53{\pm}0.60$ (range 1.00-4.35) and $0.95{\pm}0.55$ (range 0.04-2.83), respectively. The things which affected symptoms of stress, according to this study, were the external factors in the military (${\beta}=.28$, p<.001), role and relation factors (${\beta}=.21$, p<.001), work factors (${\beta}=.15$, p=.01) and passive coping styles (${\beta}=.19$, p<.001). These variables explained 28% (F=36.68, p<.001) of the variance of the total symptoms of stress. Conclusion: This study suggests that soldiers need to under go stress management.
