  • A flexible and tunable microwave photonic filter based on adjustable optical frequency comb source is demonstrated. We use a combination of a dual parallel Mach Zehnder modulator and an intensity modulator to generate fifteen comb lines with proper weights to implement a desired filter. The optical comb weights, corresponding to the tap coefficients of the filter, are flexibly changed by adjusting the operation parameters of the modulators. The achieved bandwidth and stopband attenuation of the tunable filter are 0.7 GHz and 20 dB, respectively. In addition, we overcome the undesired low frequency suppression appeared in a conventional scheme by applying a dual parallel Mach Zehnder modulator for single sideband suppressed carrier modulation.

  • In this study, microwave dielectric properties of 0.182BaO-0.818TiOS12T ceramics were investigated with sintering temperature and annealing time, and the application for the microwave dielectric resonator was studied. In the specimen simtered at 1400[$^{\circ}C$], dielectric constant, unloaded Q and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency had good values of 35.36, 5692, -4.43[ppm/$^{\circ}C$], respectively. The specimen which temperature coefficient of resonant frequency($\tau$f) was vared positive to negative value was selected, thereafter microwave dielctric properties was investigated with annealing time(0~4[hr]) in the fixed annealing temperature of 1350[$^{\circ}C$]. Increasing the annealing time, dielectric constant and unloaded Q were increased and temperature coefficient of resonant frequency was decreased.

  • Background: Evaluation of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)-strand break is important to elucidate the biological effect of ionizing radiations. The conventional methods for DNA-strand break evaluation have been achieved by Agarose gel electrophoresis and others using an electrical property of DNAs. Such kinds of DNA-strand break evaluation systems can estimate DNA-strand break, according to a molecular weight of DNAs. However, the conventional method needs pretreatment of the sample and a relatively long period for analysis. They do not have enough sensitivity to detect the strand break products in the low-dose region. Materials and Methods: The sample is water, methanol and plasmid DNA solution. The plasmid DNA pUC118 was multiplied by using Escherichia coli JM109 competent cells. The resonance frequency and Q-value were measured by means of microwave dielectric absorption spectroscopy. When a sample is located at a center of the electric field, resonance curve of the frequency that existed as a standing wave is disturbed. As a result, the perturbation effect to perform a resonance with different frequency is adopted. Results and Discussion: The resonance frequency shifted to higher frequency with an increase in a concentration of methanol as the model of the biological material, and the Q-value decreased. The absorption peak in microwave power spectrum of the double-strand break plasmid DNA shifted from the non-damaged plasmid DNA. Moreover, the sharpness of absorption peak changed resulting in change in Q-value. We confirmed that a resonance frequency shifted to higher frequency with an increase in concentration of the plasmid DNA. Conclusion: We developed a new technique for an evaluation of DNA damage. In this paper, we report the evaluation method of DNA damage using microwave dielectric absorption spectroscopy.

  • High temperature superconducting YBCO films have been grown on MgO substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) with Nd:YAG laser Superconducting microwave filter was fabricated by conventional photolithography method. We have designed filter with the center frequency of 14 GHz. We have measured the center frequency of filter at 77 K and its critical temperature 89K. Also we have designed another filter to compare frequency responses. The measured frequency responses will be presented.

  • An electron Boltzmann equation is solved numerically to calculate the electron energy distribution functions in plasma discharge which is generated by radio-frequency (RF) and microwave frequency electric field. The maintenance field strengths are determined self-consistently by solving the homogeneous electron Boltzmann equation in the Lorentz approximation expressed by 2nd order differential equation and an additional particle balance equation expressed by integro-differential equation. By using this numerical code, the electron energy distribution functions in argon discharge are calculated in the range from RF to microwave frequency. The influence of frequency of the HF electric field on the electron energy distribution functions and ionization rate are investigated.

  • This paper presents a design methodology for wideband single-layered microwave absorbers with arbitrary absorption at the design center frequency using reactive Salisbury screens. The bandwidth of the absorber increases when the flatness of the reflection response at the design center frequency is maximized. Based on this observation, closed-form design formulas for wideband absorbers are derived. As they are scalable to any design frequency, wideband reactive screens can be systematically realized using two-dimensional periodic crossed-dipole structures patterned on a resistive sheet. Based on this method, a single-layered absorber with a 90% bandwidth improved to 124% of the design center frequency is presented. For the purpose of physical demonstration, an absorber with a design center frequency of 10 GHz is designed and fabricated using a silver nanowire resistive film with a surface resistance of 30 Ω/square. The measured absorption shows a good agreement with both the calculation and the electromagnetic simulation.

  • We had experimental studies of microwave output generator. We experimented with a corrugate-shped K-band slow wave guide in the backward wave oscillator. It generated output 표 interaction between electron beam's generation and magnetic field. We estimated oscillation frequency at 24GHz by changing propagation velocity and group velocity. We identified movement by second harmonic of Cherencov interaction and slow cyclotron mode. In our study we achieved oscillation stabilization, generation of long pulse, improvement of oscillation efficiency and output.

  • The defects on the metal surface. such as the ended circular pressed hole. the penetrated circular drilled hole, and the linear hollow lanes have been investigated by means of the microwave. In this experiment, frequency was set at 9.2GHz with 3kHz modulation, and the methods of reflection, transmission, fixed carrier frequency, and mod-demodulated technique have been used for investigating defects. The magnitudes of the microwave signals have been changed at the ended circular pressed hole and the penetrated circular drilled hole. The defect sizes that were estimated from the reflected microwave signals had the dimensions enlarged by twice the original size of the penetrated circular drilled hole and 2.5 times the original size of the ended circular pressed hole. The magnitudes of the reflected microwave signals from the linear hollow lane have increased with expansion of the width of the notch. In the linear hollow lane with the depth of 2.4mm, the reflected microwave signals versus the defect widths had a maximum value at the defect width of 50mm, and in the linear hollow lanes with the depths of 1.2mm and 0.45mm, the reflected microwave signals versus the defects widths had the maximum values each at the defect depths of 55mm.

  • A new microwave wideband frequency discdriminator is described, which is based on the theory of transmission line frequency discriminator known as having the widest bandwidth. It has been realized with microstrip lines and slot lines. It is experimentally verified that the discriminator is linear in a 1.6 GHz bandwidth centered at frequency of 3.2 GHz and has return loss of 20dB or more in that bandwidth.
