  • Heat-treatment is one of the core technologies to enhance various characteristics such as strength, hardness, toughness, abrasion resistance and fatigue resistance for the mold material. This paper focuses on characteristics of the laser heat-treatment according to the cylindrical bar diameter variation in case of the SM45C. From the results of the experiments, it has been observed that the maximum hardness is 744Hv when the power is 1630W and the travel of laser is 0.5m/min. And then, the hardness width, depth and microstructure were observed for characteristics. Finally, when the cylindrical bar diameter size grow, the hardness width decrease whereas hardness depth increase.

  • Recently, the properties of nanostructured materials as advanced engineering materials have received great attention. These properties include fracture toughness and a high degree of hardness. To hinder grain growth during sintering, it is necessary to fabricate nanostructured materials. In this respect, a high-frequency induction-heated sintering method has been presented as an effective technique for making nanostructured materials at a lower temperature in a very short heating period. Nanopowders of W and $Al_2O_3$ are synthesized from $WO_3$ and Al powders during high-energy ball milling. Highly dense nanostructured $W-Al_2O_3$ composites are made within three minutes by high-frequency induction-heated sintering method and materials are evaluated in terms of hardness, fracture toughness, and microstructure. The hardness and fracture toughness of the composite are $1364kg/mm^2$ and $7.1MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively. Fracture toughness of nanostructured $W-Al_2O_3$ is higher than that of monolithic $Al_2O_3$. The hardness of this composite is higher than that of monolithic W.

  • The general purpose of this paper is Evaluation of material properties in spring steels by investigate correlation between ultrasonic attenuation and virker's hardness, charpy impact properties, microstructures. The three test speciments of the $490{\times}90 mm$ plates and 20 mm thick are used but differ in heat treatment, one is rolled plate, the second is quenched and then tempered, and the third is quenched. ultrasonic attenuation were obtained at fifteen locations on the plates. In order to investigate the correlation between hardness ( especially, HV ) and the attenuation, the virker's hardness and the microstructures were observed for three spring steels. also the charpy impact test were carried out at the room temperature in order to investigate the relationship between impact properties and the attenuation. The experimental results obtained from three different spring related to the heat treatment conditions and attenuation coefficient is increased with increasing the hardness(HV). Ultrasonic attenuation coefficients have shawn are ability to distinguish among spring steels.

  • To obtain the optimal condition of heat treatment of wear-resistant alloy, hardness and Charpy V-notch test have been performed with Co-based Stellite No.4, No.6 and Tribaloy 800 alloys, following by heat treatment at the various conditions. Heat treatment at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 1 hours caused the as-casted Tribaloy 800 with FCC crystal structure to transform to HCP structure and lamellar eutectic structure was disappeared, which did not influence on the hardness. Aging at $800^{\circ}C$ for 20 hours, following by $1250^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours heat treatment has enhanced hardness significantly, which is due to the precipitation of large amounts of Laves-phase. The hardness of Stellite alloys was increased by the aging at $800^{\circ}C$ to 5 hours, and was nearly constant by the aging over 5 hours. The toughness of Stellite alloys was a few influenced by the aging treatment.

  • Experimental Ti-13%Zr and Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloys were made in an argon-arc melting furnace. The grade 2 CP Ti was used to control. The alloys were cast into phosphate bonded $SiO_2$ investment molds using an argon-arc casting machine, and The hardness and microstructures of the castings were investigated in order to reveal their possible use for new dental casting materials and to collect useful data for alloy design. The hardness of the Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloy(379Hv) became higher than that of Ti-13%Zr(317Hv) alloy, and the hardness of this alloys became higher than that of CP Ti(247Hv). Increasing in the hardness of the Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloy was considered to be solid solution hardening as the Ti-Zr system shows a completely solid solution for both high temperature $\beta$phase and low temperature $\alpha$ phase and also the inclusion of the eutectoid structure($\alpha Ti+Ti_{2}Cu$). No martensitic structures are observed in the specimen made of CP Ti, but Ti-13%Zr and Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloys show a kind of martensitic structure. Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu shows the finest microstructure. From these results, it was concluded that new alloys for dental casting materials should be designed as Ti-Zr-Cu based alloys.

  • The microstructure and hardness of a porcelain fused Au-Pt-Cu-In alloy was investigated using optical microscopy, secondary electron microscopy, electron probe microanalyzer, transmission electron microscope, and vickers hardness. The hardness of the heat-treated Au-Pt-Cu-In quartenary alloy reached a maximum value in 30 min at 550$^{\circ}C$ in the range of 150 to 950$^{\circ}C$. In the aged Au-Pt-Cu-0.5In alloy at 550$^{\circ}C$, the hardness of the alloy rapidly increased until 30min with increasing aging time and after that it was remained nearly constant value. Based on above results, glazing and final aging of the porcelain fused Au-Pt-Cu-0.5In alloy were performed at 920 and 550$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The hardness of Au-Pt-Cu-0.5In alloy glazed at 920$^{\circ}C$ was 90 Hv and that of the alloy aged for 30 min at 550$^{\circ}C$ increased to 160 Hv. This indicates that a ceramic-metal crown with high strength can be manufactured using the glazing at 920$^{\circ}C$ and followed final aging at 550$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min.

  • The formation of a thicker hard alloyed layer have been investigated on the surface of aluminum cast alloy (AC2B) by PTA overlaying process with Cr, Cu and Ni motel powders under the condition of overlaying current 125-200A. overlaying speed 150 mm/min and different powder feeding rate 5-20 g/min. In addition the characteristics of hardening and wear resistance of alloyed layer here been examined in relation to the microstructure of alloyed layer. Main results obtained were summarized as follows: 1) There was an optimum overlaying condition to get a good alloyed layer with smooth surface. This good layer became easy to be formed as increasing overlaying current and decreasing powder feeding rate under a constant overlaying speed. 2) Cu powder was the most superior one in metal powders used due to a wide optimum overlaying condition range, uniform hardness distribution of Hv250-350, good oar resistance and freedom from cracking in alloyed layer with fine hyper-eutectic structure. 3) On the contrary, irregular hardness distribution was usually obtained in Cr ar Ni alloyed layers of which hardness was increased as Cr or Ni contents and reached to maximum hardness of about Hv400-850 at about 60wt%cr or 40wt%Ni in alloyed layer. 4) Cracking occurred in Cr or Ni alloyed layers with higher hardness than Hv250-300 at mere than 20-25wt% of Cr or Ni contents in alloyed layer. Porosity was observed in all alloyed layers but decreased by usage of spherical powder with smooth surface.

  • Tungsten carbide has many industrial applications due to its high electrical and thermal conductivity, high melting temperature, high hardness and good chemical stability. Because tungsten carbide is difficult to sinter, it is sintered with nickel or cobalt as a binder and is currently used in nozzles, cutting tools, and molds. Alumina is reported to be a viable binder for tungsten carbide due to its higher oxidation resistance and lower cost than nickel and cobalt. The ultrafine tungsten carbide-graphene-alumina composites were rapidly sintered in a high frequency induction heating active sintering unit. The microstructure and mechanical properties (fracture toughness and hardness) of the composites were investigated and analyzed by Vickers hardness tester and electron microscope. Since the high-frequency induction heating sintering method enables high-speed sintering, ultrafine composites can be prepared by preventing grain growth. In the tungsten carbide-graphene-alumina composites, the grain size of tungsten carbide increased with the amount of alumina participation. The hardness and fracture toughness of the tungsten carbide-5% graphene- x% alumina (x = 0, 5, 10,15) composites were 5.1, 8.6, 8.6, and 8.4 MPa-m1/2 and 2384, 2168, 2165, and 2102 kg/mm2, respectively. The fracture toughness increased without a significant decrease in hardness. Sinterability was improved by adding alumina to tungsten carbide-graphene.

  • Microstructure and hardness of metallic powder of Cu was studied after high pressure torsion (HPT) with 10 torsions and high pressure of 6 GPa. The size Cu grain decreases drastically after HPT and reaches the nano size range. During HPT, Cu powder increases hardness and Hall-Petch hardening, due to the decreasing grain size. In this study, effect of HPT on the hardness of Cu powders and consolidation with Nanocrystalline of the work reported here. The results indicated that Cu powder has a beneficial effect on homogeneous deformation, reducing grain size.
