Microstructural characteristics such as hydrates and porosity greatly influence the development of concrete strength. In this study, a strength estimation model for early-age concrete considerig, the microstructural characteristics was proposed, which considers the effects of both an increment of degree of hydration and capillary porosity on a strength increment. Hydration modeling and compressive strength test with curing temperature and curing ages were carried out. By comparing test results with estimated strength, it is found that the strength estimation model can estimate compressive strength of early-age concrete with curing ages and curing temperature within a margin of error.
The microstructures of the HAZ (Heat Affected Zone) are generally different from the base metal due to rapid thermal cycle during welding process. Particuraly, CGHAZ (Coarsened Grain Heat Affected Zone) near the fusion line is the most concerned region in which many metallurgical and mechanical discontinuities have been normally generated. A computer program by the numerical formularization of phase transformation during cooling with different rates was developed to generate the CCT diagram, and to predict microstructural (phase) changes in the CGHAZ. In order to verify simulated results, isothermal and continuous cooling transformation experiments were conducted. The simulated and experimental results showed that the developed computer model could successfully predict the room temperature microstructural changes (changes in volume fraction of phases) under various welding conditions (heat input & cooling rate $(Δt_{8/5})$).

Modeling of vibrations of a rotating pendulum with working shape memory alloy rod has been performed in the frames of a microstructural model taking into account the latent heat release, absorption and the heat exchange during direct and reverse martensitic transformation. It has been shown that the influence of the latent heat, the rate of preliminary deviation of the pendulum from the equilibrium, the rate of heating and cooling can have a significant impact on the vibrations and damping characteristics of the system.

This paper is concerned with the prediction of micro structural changes of pearlitic steel wire during clod drawing. The most important microstructural aspects are ferrite/cementite interlamellar spacing, cementite shape and thickness, since those are crucial factors to determine the mechanical strength of pearlitic steel. In this study, a couple of new algorithms to predict the above microstructural changes are developed based on the deformation histories of macro material points obtained from finite element simulations for pearlitic steel wire drawing. Some predictions are shown. The special features of the algorithms developed in this study are discussed in details.
In this study a new analytical model which can describe the relationship between the bridging stress and microstructure has beenproposed in order to investigate the microstructural effect on the R-curve behavior in polycrystalline aluminas since the R-curve can be derived via the bridging stress function. In the currently developed model function the distribution of grain size is considered as a microstructural factor in modeling of bridging stress function and thus the bridging stress function including three constants PM, n, and Cx, can be established analytically and quantitatively. The results indicate that the n value is closely related to the grain size distribution thereby providing a reliability of the current model for the bridging stress analysis. Thus this model which explains the correlation of the bridging stress distribution and microstructual parame-ters is useful for the systematic interpretation of microfracture mechanism including the R-curve behavior in polycrystalline aluminas.
A stochastic model, based on the coupling of the finite volume(FV) method for macroscopic heat flow calculation and a two-dimensional cellular automaton(CA) model for treating microstructural evolution was applied-for the prediction of microstructural evolution in squeeze casting. The interfacial heat transfer coefficient at the casting/die interface was evaluated as a function of time using an inverse problem method in order to provide a quantitative simulation of solidification sequences under high pressure. The effects of casting process variables on the formation of solidification grain structures and on the columnar to equiaxed transition of an Al-4.5wt%Cu alloy in squeeze casting were investigated. The calculated solidification grain structures were in good agreement with those obtained experimentally.

A two-layer beam consisting of an elastoplastic layer and a functional layer made of shape memory alloy (SMA) TiNi is considered. Constitutive relations for SMA are set by a microstructural model capable to calculate strain increment produced by arbitrary increments of stress and temperature. This model exploits the approximation of small strains. The equations to calculate the variations of the strain and the internal variables are based on the experimentally registered temperature kinetics of the martensitic transformations with an account of the crystallographic features of the transformation and the laws of equilibrium thermodynamics. Stress and phase distributions over the beam height are calculated by steps, by solving on each step the boundary-value problem for given increments of the bending moment (or curvature) and the tensile force (or relative elongation). Simplifying Bernoulli's hypotheses are applied. The temperature is considered homogeneous. The first stage of the numerical experiment is modeling of preliminary deformation of the beam by bending or stretching at a temperature corresponding to the martensitic state of the SMA layer. The second stage simulates heating and subsequent cooling across the temperature interval of the martensitic transformation. The curvature variation depends both on the total thickness of the beam and on the ratio of the layer's thicknesses.

The present study numerically investigates the fuel-air mixing characteristics, flame structure, and pollutant emission inside a double-swirler combustor. A PSR(Perfectly Stirred Reactor) based microstructural model is employed to account for the effects of finite rate chemistry on the flame structure and NO formation. The turbulent combustion model is extended to nonadiabatic flame condition with radiation by introducing an enthalpy variable, and the radiative heat loss is calculated by a local, geometry-independent model. The effects of turbulent fluctuation are taken into account by the joint assumed PDFs. Numerical model is based on the non-orthogonal body-fitted coordinate system and the pressure/velocity coupling is handled by PISO algorithm in context with the finite volume formulation. The present PSR-based turbulent combustion model has been applied to analyze the highly intense turbulent nonpremixed flame field in the double swirler combustor. The detailed discussions were made for the flow structure, combustion effects on flow structure, flame structure, and emission characteristics in the highly intense turbulent swirling flame of the double swirler burner.
Uncertainty in concrete properties, including concrete modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture, are predicted by developing a microstructural homogenization model. The homogenization model is developed by analyzing a concrete representative volume element (RVE) using the finite element (FE) method. The concrete RVE considers concrete as a three phase composite material including: cement paste, aggregate and interfacial transition zone (ITZ). The homogenization model allows for considering two sources of variability in concrete, randomly dispersed aggregates in the concrete matrix and uncertain mechanical properties of composite phases of concrete. Using the proposed homogenization technique, the uncertainty in concrete modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture (described by numerical cumulative probability density function) are determined. Deflection uncertainty of reinforced concrete (RC) beams, propagated from uncertainties in concrete properties, is quantified using Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. Cracked plane frame analysis is used to account for tension stiffening in concrete. Concrete homogenization enables a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between concrete materials and structural modeling, which is necessary for realistic serviceability prediction.
A new analytical model which can discribe the relationship between the bridging stress and the crack opening displacement was proposed to investigate the microstructural effect on the R-curve behavior in a polycrystalline alumina. The crack opening displacement according to the distance behind the stationary crack tip was measured using in-situ fracture technique in an SEM, and then used for a fitting procedure to obtain the distribution of bridging stress. The current model and an empirical power law relation were introduced into the fitting procedure. The results indicated that the bridging stress function and R-curve computed by the current model were consistent with those computed by the power law relation. The microstructural factor, e.g., the distribution of grain size, was also found to be closely related to the bridging stress. Thus, this model explained well the interaction effect between the distribution of bridging stress and the local-fracture-controlling microstructure, providing important information for the systematic interpretation of microfracture mechanism including R-curve behavior of a monolithic alumina.
