  • A new colloidal silver (Ag) system is present in which a fine colloidal Ag is in situ deposited onto functionalized porous poly (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (poly (EGDMA)) microspheres. The effectiveness of Ag deposition was investigated considering the surface characteristics of poly (EGDMA) microspheres. The result reported in this study illustrates that the control of surface area and surface functionality (in this study, a hydroxyl group) of poly (EGDMA) microspheres is an important factor that determines practically the degree of deposition of colloidal Ag. The x-ray analysis showed that Ag nanoparticles were dispersed evenly inner and outer surfaces and had a face center cubic (fee) phase. In the preservative efficacy test, the Ag-containing poly (EGDMA) microspheres had a powerful anti-bacterial activity, showing a high potential for a new preservative in cosmetic industry.

  • Porous alumina ceramics are involved in many industrial applications due to the exceptional properties of these products. This study addresses the preparation of porous alumina ceramics using hollow microspheres as a pore-forming agent and slip casting as a green-body-forming technique. A uniform distribution of pores is a basic requirement of a porous material. This study investigates three different slurry systems, i.e., as-prepared alumina slurry, alumina slurry electrostatically dispersed by hydrochloric acid (HCl), and slurry dispersed by the commercial dispersant 'Darvan C-N'. At a low viscosity, the hollow microspheres in the slurry tend to float, which causes a non-uniform pore distribution. To avoid this phenomenon, the viscosity of the slurry was increased to the extent that the movement of hollow microspheres ceased in the slurry. As a result, a uniform pore distribution was achieved.

  • We investigated the feasibility of dispersion polymerization without any stabilizer, which has been considered essential for ensuring colloidal stability. By employing small amounts of a lyophilic comonomer, 4-vinyl pyridine, styrene was successfully polymerized by dispersion polymerization in aqueous alcohol without stabilizer to afford stable poly(styrene-co-4-vinyl pyridine) copolymer microspheres. The stable microspheres were produced in the 4-vinyl pyridine range of 2-15 wt% to styrene. Without 4-vinyl pyridine, severely coagulated particles were obtained, implying that the poly(4-vinyl pyridine) moiety endowed colloidal stability. The polymerization kinetics, behavior, and properties of the ultimate particles showed general features of dispersion polymerization. The study results suggest that stabilizer- tree dispersion polymerization is possible, thereby facilitating the synthesis of impurity(stabilizer)-tree polymer particles.

  • Biodegradability of poly $Poly({\gamma}-benzyl L-Glutamate)/poly(ethylene oxide)/Poly({\gamma}-benzyl L-Glutamate)$ block copolymer (GEG) having different content of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) were examined using magnetite as a tracer in mice. GEG microspheres containing magnetite were injected into mice through tail vein. Biodegradability and tissue distribution of microspheres were examined by analyzing the amount of magnetite in the microspheres recollected from mice organs after specific time interval. The results showed that GEG microsphere of high content of PEO was degraded more rapidly than those of low content of PEO in the mice organs.

  • This study was aimed at improving the white index (WI) to prepare thermally expandable microspheres for wallpaper. In particular, thermally expandable microspheres were prepared for different colloidal silica particle sizes to study thermal properties, foaming ratio, and WI. The spheres obtained from tiny colloidal silica were the best in terms of WI and yellowing. Additionally, thermogravimetric analysis results show that small colloidal silica particles are more likely to be adsorbed physically or chemically to the microsphere surface, thereby improving WI at higher temperatures.

  • Mesoporous $TiO_2$ microspheres were prepared by spray pyrolysis for photocatalysis. Post modification of $TiO_2$ by heat treatment was performed to optimize its photocatalytic performance. First, spherical $TiO_2$ particles with mesoporous structure were synthesized at pyrolysis temperatures of 500, 600, and $700^{\circ}C$. After characterization by XRD, SEM, and $N_2$ adsorption, a sample prepared at $500^{\circ}C$ was found to possess desirable properties for photocatalytic performance through post-modification. In methylene blue degradation, mesoporous $TiO_2$ microspheres synthesized at $500^{\circ}C$ outperformed other microspheres. Furthermore, samples obtained by spray pyrolysis at $500^{\circ}C$ were calcined at various temperatures as a post-modification process. The sample calcined at $350^{\circ}C$ showed improved photocatalytic activity due to optimal anatase crystallinity and surface area.

  • The in vitro release of rhGH from PLGA microspheres was characterized. rhGH-loaded PLGA microspheres were prepared with 50:50 poly(D.L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) polymers using a double emulsion process. To simulate rhGH release under physiological conditions. the microspheres were suspended in a physiological buller at 37$^{\circ}C$. Quantification of the rhGH released and its molecular form analysis were carried out using SE-HPLC. (omitted)

  • We propose a characterization method for the scattering property of microspheres using spectroscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT). To prove the effectiveness of the proposed method, we prepare solutions of different concentrations using microspheres ranging from 28 to 2300 nm in diameter. Time-frequency analysis is performed on the measured interference spectrum of each solution, and the resulting spectroscopic information is converted into histograms for centroid wavelengths. The histograms present a very sensitive response to changes in the concentration and size of microspheres. We classify them into three categories according to their characteristics. When the histogram of each category is replaced with the corresponding calculated value of the scattering coefficient, each category is mapped to a different scattering-coefficient region. It is expected that the proposed method could be used to investigate the optical characteristics of a biological sample from OCT images, which would be helpful for optical diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

  • Meloxicam-loaded microspheres were prepared with poly(D,L-lactic acid)(PLA) by a solvent-emulsion evaporation method. The morphology, particle size, drug loading capacity, drug entrapment efficiency (EE) and release patterns of drug were investigated in vitro. Various batches of micro spheres with different size and drug content were obtained by changing the ratio of meloxicam to $PLA^{\circ}{\AE}s$ with different molecular weight, PLA concentration in the dispersed phase and stirring rate. Meloxicam crystals on microsphere surface, which were released rapidly and could act as a loading dose, were observed with increasing drug content. The release rate was increased with increase in drug contents and decrease in the molecular weight of PLA. Microspheres prepared with smaller molecular weight produced faster drug release rate. The release rate of meloxicam for long-acting injectable delivery system in vitro, which would aid in predicting in vivo release profile, could be controlled by properly optimizing various factors affecting characteristics of microspheres. Blood concentration-time profile of meloxicam after intramuscular injection of meloxicam-loaded microspheres in rabbits showed possibility of long term application of this system in clinical settings.
