Activated carbon fibers (ACFs) with high surface area and pore volume were modified with metal Ni impregnation and fluorination and investigated hydrogen storage properties by volumetric method. Micropore volume values of ACFs obtained from surface modification with Ni impregnation and fluorination were decreased 9 and 35 %, respectively. Hydrogen storage capacities of fluorinated ACFs were slightly changed, on the other hand, that of Ni impregnated ACF was considerably increased. It means that hydrogen was not only adsorbed on ACF surface, but also on Ni metal surface by means of dissociation. Although the microphone volume of ACF modified with fluorination was decreased, its hydrogen storage were found not to be changed compared with fresh ACF. These results indicated that the surface of ACF after fluorination modification may be strongly attracted hydrogen due to high electronegativity of fluorine. Therefore, it was proven that hydrogen storage capacity was related with micropore volume and surface property of carbon materials as well as specific surface area.
The structural parameters such as Lc, La and d of $CO_2$activated isotropic carbon fibers(ACFs) were obtained from XRD in order to understand a development mechanism of micropores. And the structural parameters were compared with specific surface area(SSA) data. The $d_{002}$, Lc, and La of the original fiber were measured to be 4.04$\AA$, 6.2$\AA$, and 23.6$\AA$, respectively. Carbonization of outer-parts and oxidization of inner-parts of the original fibers were far from completeness. It was observed that the structural changes of the ACFs during activation take place severely, therefore the carbonization and the oxidization of the fibers take place simultaneous with pore developments. The $d_{002}$ of the ACFs was increased to be 2.80$\AA$, and the La of the ACFs was decreased to be 17.0$\AA$ by activation. It was shown that the pores are developed continuously from the outer-parts to the inner-parts of the fibers, therefore the SSA increases as a result of the development of pores fully to the inner-parts of the fiber when the burn-off degree was over :39%. It seems that the (002) planes of crystallites contribute to the micropore wall related to the super high SSA.SSA.
Cigarettes were made using a triple filter with several porous materials in its cavity. The removal effect of the adsorbents on carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide in cigarette smoke was investigated with the variation of their surface area and pore volume distributions. Several attempts were made to activated coconut shell based char under the fixed steam purging rate. 1. The specific surface area increased in number of micropore. It was found for transitional pore to have a little effect on the total surface area. 2. A Small amount of the particulate matter adsorbed on the adsorbents with transitional pores, Zeolite showed a little effect on the carbon monoxide adsorption though its small pore volume, but there was no significant difference in the adsorption capacity zeolite and the others. 3. In the adsorption for hydrogen cyanide as a vapor phase in cigarette smoke, the adsorption effect of the adsorbents increased remarkably with increasing their surface area and number of micropore. It was considered that the adsorbents with small pore volume like molecular seive 4A, in which the capillary diffusion of adsorbates could not be able, would not be effective for the adsorption of hydrogen cyanide.
A novel electrode for an NO gas sensor was fabricated from electrospun polyacrylonitrile fibers by thermal treatment to obtain carbon fibers followed by chemical activation to enhance the activity of gas adsorption sites. The activation process improved the porous structure, increasing the specific surface area and allowing for efficient gas adsorption. The gas sensing ability and response time were improved by the increased surface area and micropore fraction. High performance gas sensing was then demonstrated by following a proposed mechanism based on the activation effects. Initially, the pore structure developed by activation significantly increased the amount of adsorbed gas, as shown by the high sensitivity of the gas sensor. Additionally, the increased micropore fraction enabled a rapid sensor response time due to improve the adsorption speed. Overall, the sensitivity for NO gas was improved approximately six-fold, and the response time was reduced by approximately 83% due to the effects of chemical activation.
In this work, multi-functional groups, i.e., nitrogen and oxygen, contained microporous carbons (MF-MCs) were prepared by the one step carbonization of the poly(vinylidene chloride-co-acrylonitrile-co-methyl methacryalte) (PVDC-AN-MMA) without activation. The electrochemical performance of MF-MCs was investigated as a function of carbonization temperature. It was found that MF-MCs had a high specific surface area over $800m^2/g$ without additional activation, resulting from the micropore's formation by the release of chlorine groups. In addition, although functional groups decreased, specific surface area was increased with increasing carbonization temperature, leading to the enhanced electrochemical performance. The pore size of the carbon distributed mainly in small micropore of 1.5 to 2 nm, which was idal for aqueous electrolyte. Indeed, the unique microstructure features, i.e. high specific surface area and optimized pore size provided high energy storage capability of MF-MCs. These results indicated that the microporous features of MF-MCs lead to feasible electron transfer during charge/discharge duration and the presence of nitrogen and oxygen groups on the MF-MCs electrode led to a pseudocapacitive reaction.
We intended to make the activated carbon fibers which could separate, remove and recover the volatile organic compounds of benzene, toluene, acetone and methanol. Changing activation temperature and time, large specific surface area and narrow pore distribution could be obtained. The activated carbon fibers have large adsorption capacity and selectivility for those organic compounds. We characterized the adsorption capability of the activated carbon fibers for benzene, toluene, acetone and methanol by BET specific surface area and pore size and micropore volume measurements. In the result of activation, the maximum value of BET specific surface area of the fibers was $1100\m^2$/g at $800^{\circ}C$ for 60 minutes and $K_2$O was reduced actively in this condition. Their average pore size was 5.8~5.9$\AA$. The activated carbon fibers prepared in this work had high adsorption rate to saturation and the selectibility for the above organic compounds. The adsorbed amount of acetone and methanol(diameter of$ 4.3\AA$ and $4.4\AA$ respectively) which are smaller than micropore diameter in size was 43~49%, which was larger value than benzene and toluene(in the same diameter as $5.9\AA$).
Potassium hydroxide activated carbons were prepared from Egyptian petroleum cokes with different KOH/coke ratios and at different activation temperatures and times. The textural properties were determined by adsorption of nitrogen at $-196^{\circ}C$. The adsorption of iodine and methylene blue was also investigated at $30^{\circ}C$. The surface area and the non-micropore volume increased whereas the micropore volume decreased with the increase of the ratio KOH/coke. Also the surface area and porosity increased with the rise of activation temperature from 500 to $800^{\circ}C$. Textural parameter considerably increased with the increase of activation time from 1 to 3 h. Further increasing of activation time from 3 to 4 h was associated with a less pronounced increase in textural parameters. The adsorption of iodine shows the same trend of surface area and porosity change exhibited by nitrogen adsorption, with KOH/coke ratio and temperature of activation. Adsorption of methylene blue follows pseudo-first-order kinetics and its equilibrium adsorption follows Langmuir and D-R models.
2-methylisoborneol (MIB) is a musty odor compound produced as a secondary metabolite by some cyanobacteria and actinomycetes. It is lead to distrust in tap water due to taste and odor. It is well known that activated carbon (AC) adsorption is the best available technology to remove 2-MIB and geosmin. In this study, physical characteristics of virgin AC and reactivated AC was compared. The effect of variation of NOM molecular weight on adsorption of 2-MIB in virgin AC and reactivated AC were also evaluated. BET surface area was decreased by 13 to 23% and total pore volume was decreased by 18 to 21% due to first and second reactivation compare to the virgin carbon. However, mesopore volume ($V_{meso}$) was increased about 14% after reactivation. It showed that micropore volume was decreased and move to mesopore or macropore after reactivation. Decreased adsorption capacity of 2-MIB was greatly related to below 3000Da. Adsorption capacity of 2-MIB was rather greater in virgin AC than in reactivated, which is strongly related to micropore volume.
