  • A probabilistic micromechanical framework is proposed to quantify numerically the self-healing capabilities of polymers containing microcapsules. A two-step self-healing process is designed in this study: A probabilistic micromechanical framework based on the ensemble volume-averaging method is derived for the polymers, and a hitting probability model combined with a crack nucleation model is then utilized for encountering microcapsules and microcracks. Using this framework, a series of parametric investigations are performed to examine the influence of various model parameters (e.g., the volume fraction of microcapsules, microcapsule radius, radius ratio of microcracks to microcapsules, microcrack aspect ratio, and scale parameter) on the self-healing capabilities of the polymers. The proposed framework is also implemented into a finite element code to solve the self-healing behavior of tapered double cantilever beam specimens.

  • This paper presents an analysis of the bending, buckling and free vibration of functionally graded sandwich beams resting on elastic foundation by using a refined quasi-3D theory in which both shear deformation and thickness stretching effects are included. The displacement field contains only three unknowns, which is less than the number of parameters of many other shear deformation theories. In order to homogenize the micromechanical properties of the FGM sandwich beam, the material properties are derived on the basis of several micromechanical models such as Tamura, Voigt, Reuss and many others. The principle of virtual works is used to obtain the equilibrium equations. The elastic foundation is modeled using the Pasternak mathematical model. The governing equations are obtained through the Hamilton's principle and then are solved via Navier solution for the simply supported beam. The accuracy of the proposed theory can be noticed by comparing it with other 3D solution available in the literature. A detailed parametric study is presented to show the influence of the micromechanical models on the general behavior of FG sandwich beams on elastic foundation.

  • Anisotropic characteristics of deformation are important to understand the particular behavior in the pre-failure state of soils. Recent experiments shows that cross-anisotropic moduli of granular soils can be expressed by functions of normal stresses in the corresponding directions, which is closely linked to micromechanical characteristics of particles. Granular soils are composed of a number of particles so that the force-displacement relationship at each contact point governs the macroscopic stress-strain relationship. Therefore, the micromechanical approach in which the deformation of granular soils is regarded as a mutual interaction between particle contacts is one of the best ways to investigate the anisotropic deformation of soils. In this study, a numerical program based on the theory of micromechanics is developed. Modified Hertz-Mindlin model is adopted to represent the force-displacement relationship in each contact point for the realistic prediction of anisotropic moduli. To evaluate the model parameters, a set of analytical solutions of anisotropic moduli is derived in the isotropic stress condition. By comparing the analytical solutions with exact values, we confirm that the analytical solutions can be utilized to evaluate model parameters within the acceptable range of error of 10%.

  • In this paper, we developed a physically-based micromechanical model for inelastic deformation of ceramic powders. The aggregate response of ceramic particles was modeled using the two-surface yield function which considered the shear-induced dilatancy caused by friction, rolling resistance and cohesion between powder particles and consolidation caused by plastic deformation of powder themselves under high compression. The constitutive equations were implemented into the user-subroutine VUMAT of finite element program ABAQUS/Explicit. The material parameters in the constitutive model were identified by calibrating the model to reproduce data from triaxial compression tests and simple compression tests. The density distribution obtained by using the proposed model was in good quantitative agreement with the experimental results of the triaxial compression and cold isostaic compression as well.

  • The focus of this research effort was characterization of the flexural and tensile properties of a specific ultra-high-strength, fiber-reinforced concrete material. The material exhibited a mean unconfined compressive strength of approximately 140 MPa and was reinforced with short, randomly distributed alkali resistant glass fibers. As a part of the study, coupled experimental, analytical and numerical investigations were performed. Flexural and direct tension tests were first conducted to experimentally characterize material behavior. Following experimentation, a micromechanically-based analytical model was utilized to calculate the material's tensile failure response, which was compared to the experimental results. Lastly, to investigate the relationship between the tensile failure and flexural response, a numerical analysis of the flexural experiments was performed utilizing the experimentally developed tensile failure function. Results of the experimental, analytical and numerical investigations are presented herein.

  • Polymer matrix composites are widely used in many engineering applications as they can be customized to meet a desired performance while not only maintaining low cost but also reducing weight. Polymers can experience viscoelastic-viscoplastic response when subjected to external loadings. Various reinforcements and fillers are added to polymers which bring out more complexity in analyzing the timedependent response. This study formulates an integrated micromechanical model and finite element (FE) analysis for predicting effective viscoelastic-viscoplastic response of polymer based hybrid composites. The studied hybrid system consists of unidirectional short-fiber reinforcements and a matrix system which is composed of solid spherical particle fillers dispersed in a homogeneous polymer constituent. The goal is to predict effective performance of hybrid systems having different compositions and properties of the fiber, particle, and matrix constituents. A combined Schapery's viscoelastic integral model and Valanis's endochronic viscoplastic model is used for the polymer constituent. The particle and fiber constituents are assumed linear elastic. A previously developed micromechanical model of particle reinforced composite is first used to obtain effective mechanical properties of the matrix systems. The effective properties of the matrix are then integrated to a unit-cell model of short-fiber reinforced composites, which is generated using the FE. The effective properties of the matrix are implemented using a user material subroutine in the FE framework. Limited experimental data and analytical solutions available in the literatures are used for comparisons.

  • A micromechanical model is presented for superplasticity in which heterogeneous microstructures are coupled with deformation behavior. The effects of initial distributions of grain size, and their evolutions on the mechanical properties can be predicted by the model. Alternative stress rate models such as Jaumann rate and rotation incremental rate have been employed to analyze uniaxial loading and simple shear problems and the appropriate modeling was studied on the basis of hypoelasticity and elasto-viscoplasticity. The model has been implemented into finite element software so that full process simulation can be carried out. Tests have been conducted on Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the microstructural features such as grain size, distributions of grain size, and volume fraction of each phase were examined for the materials that were tested at different strain rates. The experimentally observed stress-strain behavior on a range of initial grain size distributions has been shown to be correctly predicted. In addition, the effect of volume fraction of the phases and concurrent grain growth were analyzed. The dependence of failure strain on strain rate has been explained in terms of the change in mechanism of grain growth that occurs with changing strain rate.

  • This paper investigates the effect of micromechanical models on the bending behavior of bidirectional functionally graded (BDFG) beams subjected to different mechanical loading. The material properties of the beam are considered to be graded in both axial and thickness directions according to a power law. The beam's behavior is modeled by the mean of quasi 3D displacement field that contain undetermined integral terms and involves a reduced unknown functions. Navier's method is employed to determine and compute the displacements and stress for a simply supported beam. Different homogenization schemes such as Voigt, Reus, and Mori-Tanaka are employed to analyze the response of the BDFG beam subjected to linear, uniform, exponential and sinusoidal distributed loading. The results obtained by the present method are compared with available results in the literature and a good agreement was found. Several numerical results are presented in tabular form and in figures to examine the effects of the material gradation, micromechanical models and types of loading on the bending response of BDFG beams. It can be concluded that the present theory is not only accurate but also simple in predicting the bending response of BDFG beam subjected to different static loads.

  • In the present work, by considering the agglomeration effect of single-walled carbon nanotubes, free vibration characteristics of functionally graded (FG) nanocomposite sandwich plates resting on Pasternak foundation are presented. The volume fractions of randomly oriented agglomerated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction. To determine the effect of CNT agglomeration on the elastic properties of CNT-reinforced composites, a two-parameter micromechanical model of agglomeration is employed. In this research work, an equivalent continuum model based on the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach is employed to estimate the effective constitutive law of the elastic isotropic medium (matrix) with oriented straight CNTs. The 2-D generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) as an efficient and accurate numerical tool is used to discretize the equations of motion and to implement the various boundary conditions. The proposed rectangular plates have two opposite edges simply supported, while all possible combinations of free, simply supported and clamped boundary conditions are applied to the other two edges. The benefit of using the considered power-law distribution is to illustrate and present useful results arising from symmetric and asymmetric profiles. The effects of two-parameter elastic foundation modulus, geometrical and material parameters together with the boundary conditions on the frequency parameters of the laminated FG nanocomposite plates are investigated. It is shown that the natural frequencies of structure are seriously affected by the influence of CNTs agglomeration. This study serves as a benchmark for assessing the validity of numerical methods or two-dimensional theories used to analysis of laminated plates.
