  • This is the first study to deal in-depth with the achene ultra-structure of the genus Launaea Cass. in Egypt. It focuses on 12 taxa belonging to 10 species of this genus. The achene wall anatomy and surface sculpturing of those taxa were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Important aspects of the investigated taxa based on the achene characters as well as SEM micrographs of the achene surface and anatomical sections are given. Main and secondary costa of the inner achenes are used for easy differentiation between L. intybacea and L. massauensis.

  • Three marine heterotrophic flagellates from intertidal sediments of Gwang-Am beach and Garorim Bay, Korea were identified as Neometanema parovale Lee and Patterson 2014, Stephanopogon pattersoni Lee et al. 2014 and Thaumatomastix sp. These species are reported taxonomically for the first time from Korea, and are described with illustrations and micrographs. Diagnostics of these species are as follows. Neometanema parovale (Euglenozoa): size in vivo, $10{\sim}23{\mu}m\;long$ with 22 pellicular strips, ingestion apparatus barely visible by light microscopy and two flagella pointed in different directions when moving. Stephanopogon pattersoni (Percolozoa): size in vivo, $20{\sim}33{\mu}m\;long$, with 6 ventral and 1 ventro-lateral ciliary rows, and three barbs. Thaumatomastix sp. (Cercozoa): size in vivo, $14{\sim}17{\mu}m$ with body scales and spines, and two flagella with one naked and one scaled.

  • The relation between the aerodynamic diameter and some morphological parameters was studied for flame-generated aggregates. $SiO_{2}$ aggregates were generated from $SiCl_{4}$ in premixed methane/air flames. These aggregates were sampled and classified according to their aerodynamic diameter by a cascade impactor; moreover, computer program was developed and tested to find the equivalent area diameter and the fractal dimension of the aggregates. We calculated the parameters from the digitized images of the aggregate TEM micrographs. The aerodynamic diameters of the sampled aggregates were larger than $0.4{\mu}m$ in this experiment. In most cases, fractal dimension of their projection image was very close to 2.0 for these large aggregates. It was found that the equivalent area diameter of these aggregates was approximately three times larger than the Stokes' diameter of them.

  • Epoxy/S2-glass reinforced composites (SGRPs) infused with Cloisite 30B nanoclays were manufactured using the vacuum assisted resin infusion molding (VARIM) process. Prior to infusion, the matrix and clays were thoroughly mixed using a direct mixing technique (DMT) and a high shear mixing technique (HSMT) to ensure uniform dispersion of the nanoclays. Structures with varying clay contents (1-3 wt%) were manufactured. Both pristine and SGRP nanocomposites were then subjected to mechanical testing. For the specimens manufactured by DMT, the tensile, flexural, and compressive modulus increased with increasing the clay content. Similarly, the tensile, flexural, compressive, interlaminate shear and impact strength increased with the addition of 1 wt% clay: however the trend reversed with further increase in the clay content. Specimens manufactured by HSMT showed superior properties compared to those of nanocomposites containing 1 wt% clay produced by DMT. In order to understand these phenomena a morphological study was conducted. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs revealed that HSMT led to better dispersion and changed the nanoclay structure from orderly intercalation to disorderly intercalation giving multi-directional strength.

  • An activated carbon which showed big adsorption capacities of iodine, potassium permanganate and phenol was prepared from the Korean ricechaff. By scanning electron micrographs and IR spectra, it was observed that the organic components in the rice-chaff were decomposed to carbon dioxide and vapor by the pyrolysis and the activation, that activated carbon particles had carbon-carbon structures with a lot of microporosity. The adsorption capacities of iodine, potassium permanganate and phenol were determined. The adsorption isotherm of phenol was well fitted in Freundlich's equation.

  • Hot-dip galvannealed sheet (GA) with high strength of $45kg/mm^2$ in tensile strength, has developed for automotive applications. However, for a successful application, the powdering behaviour of GA must be minimized. The powdering of galvannealed coatings was reduced as the silicon content in the steel increased. Rapid heating and rapid cooling rate during the galvannealing process improved the powdering resistance due to the suppression of not only the ξ phase, but also the $ \Gamma _1$, phase. An analysis of the Fe-Zn alloy phases and its relation to the powdering behaviour are discussed with SEM micrographs.

  • Several $Al_2O_3$-based polycrystalline which had different dopant ratio in the range of 0.5mol% were prepared by doping pure $Cr_2O_3$, $ZrO_2$, $HfO_3$ Single crystalline which had same composition with above polycrystalline were made by means of floating zone method. This study examined the role of each dopant for enhancing the mefchanical properties of $Al_2O_3$-based Ceramics. Optical micrographs $({\times}200)$ of $Al_2O_3-Cr_2O_3$ single crystal showing not only radial crack (rc) on the specimen surface but median crack (mc) and lateral crack (lc) under surface at the edge of indentation mark. Fracture toughness of $Al_2O_3$-based Ceramics was increased with $ZrO_2$ content. Alloying effect of $Cr_2O_3$ contributed to the hardness of $Al_2O_3$ based ceramics.

  • Five strains of the Genus Rhizobium were isolated from the nodules of five leguminous plants respectively. They were identified according to Bergey's Manual together with the results of Vincent. The flagella of each strains were observed by electron microscope using negative staining with PTA and metal shadowing with chromium. Five host plants and identified Rhizobium strains were as. follows. Pisum sativum.....R. leguminosarum Phaseolus vulgaris.....R. phaseoli Trifolium repens.....R. trifolii Glycine max.....R. japonicum Lupinus grandiflorus.....R. lupini Electron micrographs showed that R. leguminosarum and R. phaseoli had 4 peritrichous flagella, where as R. trifolii had 5 peritrichous flagella. On the other hand, R. japonicum and R. lupini had 1 subpolar flagellum.

  • Layered structures of fiber cell wall of Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) were investigated by confocal reflection microscopy (CRM). CRM micrographs revealed detailed structures of the fiber cell wall such as S1, S2, and S3 layers as well as transition layers (S12 and S23 layers), which are present between the S1, S2, and S3 layers. Microfibril angle (MFA) measurement was possible for the S2 and S3 layer in the cell wall. The experimental results suggest that CRM is a versatile microscopic method for investigation of layered structures and MFA measurement in individual sub layer of the tracheid cell wall.
