Concrete contains numerous microcracks at initially poured. The growth and propagation of
nicrockacsk are believed tc finally incur the faiure of concrete. These processings are understood
as a damage. Damage IS represented as a second-order tensor and crack is treated as a con
tinuum phenomenon. In this paper, damage is characterized through the effective stress concept
together with the hypothesis of elastic energy equivalence, and damage evolution law and
constitutive equation of a damage model are derived by using the Helmholtz frte eriergy and the
dissipation potential by means of the thermodynamic principles. The constitutive equation of the
model includes the effects of elasticity, anisotropic damage and plasticity of concrete. There are
two effective tangent stiffness tensors in this model : one is for elastic-darnage and the other for
plastic damage. For the verification of the model, finite element analysis was performed for the
analysis of concrete subjec:t to uniaxial and biaxial loading and the results obtained were
compared with test results.
The effect of $ZrO_2$ dispersed phase on the mechanical properties in $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$system has been studied. There are both metastable tetragonal phase and stable monoclinic phase of $ZrO_2$particles diespersed in Al2O3 matrix at room temperature. Metastable tetragonal $ZrO_2$ changes to the stable monoclinic structure within the stress field of the crack. And microcracks are formed by the expansion of $ZrO_2$during the tetragonal-monoclinic transformation on cooling. Therefore stress-induced phase transformation and inclusion-induced microcracking contribute to the mec-hanical properties of $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$system. Sintered composites containing 10m/o $ZrO_2$ yield KiC values of 6.5MN/$m^{3/2}$ much greater than that of pure $Al_2O_3$ This increase results from microcrack extension and stress-induced phase transformation absor-bing energy by crack propagation. Flexural strength of composites is decreased considerably in comparison with pure $Al_2O_3$ This decrease results from microcrack as a crack former and higher porosity than pure $Al_2O_3$.
Microstructure of oxide formed on Zr-Nb-Sn tube sample was intensively examined by scanning transmission electron microscopy after exposure to simulated primary water chemistry conditions of various concentrations of Zn (0 or 30 ppb) and dissolved hydrogen ($H_2$) (30 or 50 cc/kg) for various durations without applying desirable heat flux. Microstructural analysis indicated that there was no noticeable change in the microstructure of the oxide corresponding to water chemistry changes within the test duration of 100 days (pretransition stage) and no significant difference in the overall thickness of the oxide layer. Equiaxed grains with nano-size pores along the grain boundaries and microcracks were dominant near the water/oxide interface, regardless of water chemistry conditions. As the metal/oxide interface was approached, the number of pores tended to decrease. However, there was no significant effect of $H_2$ concentration between 30 cc/kg and 50 cc/kg on the corrosion of the oxide after free immersion in water at $360^{\circ}C$. The adsorption of Zn on the cladding surface was observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and detected as ZnO on the outer oxide surface. From the perspective of $OH^-$ ion diffusion and porosity formation, the absence of noticeable effects was discussed further.

The presence of hydrogen in industrial plants is a source of damage. Hydrogen attack is one such form of degradation and often causing large tube ruptures that necessitate an immediate shutdown. Hydrogen attack may reduce the fracture toughness as well as the strength of steels. This reduction is caused partially by the presence of cavities and microcracks at the grain boundaries. In the past several techniques have been used with limited results. This paper describes the application of an ultrasonic velocity and attenuation in hydrogen damage. Ultrasonic tests showed a decrease in wave velocity and an increase in attenuation. Such results demonstrate the potential for ultrasonic nondestructive testing to quantify damage. Based on this study, reliable recommendation is suggested to detect hydrogen attack.

In this study, It was developed an monitoring cracks system based on image processing techniques in order to measure cracks, which are major damages in concrete, and to convert them into a database. The crack monitoring system consists of crack image captured equipment and a crack detection and analysis software. This system provides objective and quantitative data by replacing the conventional visual inspection. The crack detection algorithm w as verified through an indoor test using virtual cracks, and the amount of crack detection and crack width change was monitored by applying it to the self-healing repair mortar construction site. In the case of the crack width detected through image analysis, the maximum difference from the actual crack width was 0.0334mm. It was possible to detect microcracks of 0.1mm or less, and the effect of crack healing over time of the self-healing repair mortar was confirmed trough the field test.
We studied the characteristics and the growth mechanism of surface cracks from the Naksansa seven-storied stone pagoda(Treasure No. 499). The pagoda is composed of both medium-grained, porphyritic biotite granite and hornblende-biotite granite. Alkali feldspar megacrysts are easily found as phenocrysts in the rocks. Surface cracks intensely developed at the lower part of the stone pagoda, and their directions are of vertical, horizontal, and diagonal. The rocks of the pagoda have intrinsic microcracks which can be defined as rift and grain rock cleavages. Both rock cleavages seems likely to have led to the crack growth and consequently to the mechanical deterioration of the pagoda. The vertical cracks developed parallel to the vertical compressive stress, whereas horizontal ones formed by tensile strength normal to the vertical compression. In addition mineral cleavages and twin planes of alkali feldspar phenocrysts seems to have been closely related to the mechanical breakdown of the rocks in the NE part of the pagoda.
Water-induced strength reduction is one of the most critical causes for rock deformation and failure. Understanding the effects of water on the strength, toughness and deformability of rocks are of a great importance in rock fracture mechanics and design of structures in rock. However, only a few studies have been conducted to understand the effects of water on fracture properties such as fracture toughness, crack propagation velocity, consumed energy, and microstructural damage. Thus, in this study, we focused on the understanding of how microscale damages induced by water saturation affect mesoscale mechanical and fracture properties compared with oven dried specimens along three notch orientations-divider, arrester, and short transverse. The mechanical properties of calcite-cemented sandstone were examined using standard uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) tests. In addition, fracture properties such as fracture toughness, consumed energy and crack propagation velocity were examined with cracked chevron notched Brazilian disk (CCNBD) tests. Digital Image Correlation (DIC), a non-contact optical measurement technique, was used for both strain and crack propagation velocity measurements along the bedding plane orientations. Finally, environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) was employed to investigate the microstructural damages produced in calcite-cemented sandstone specimens before and after CCNBD tests. As results, both mechanical and fracture properties reduced significantly when specimens were saturated. The effects of water on fracture properties (fracture toughness and consumed energy) were predominant in divider specimens when compared with arrester and short transverse specimens. Whereas crack propagation velocity was faster in short transverse and slower in arrester, and intermediate in divider specimens. Based on ESEM data, water in the calcite-cemented sandstone induced microstructural damages (microcracks and voids) and increased the strength disparity between cement/matrix and rock forming mineral grains, which in turn reduced the crack propagation resistance of the rock, leading to lower both consumed energy and fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$).
Two groups of oxide dispersion-strengthened reduced-activation ferritic/martensitic steels (A and B) were prepared by adding Y, Ti, and Zr into steels through vacuum induction melting to investigate the inclusions, microstructures, mechanical properties of the alloys. Results showed that particles with Y, Ti, and Zr easily formed. Massive, Zr-rich inclusions were found in B steel. Density of micron inclusions in A steel was 1.42 × 1014 m-3, and density of nanoparticles was 3.61 × 1016 m-3. More and finer MX carbides were found in steel tempered at 650 ℃, and yield strengths (YS) of A and B steel were 714±2 and 664±3.5 MPa. Thermomechanical processing (TMP) retained many dislocations, which improved the mechanical properties. YSs of A and B treated by TMP were 725±3 and 683±4 MPa. The existence of massive Zr-rich inclusions in B steels interrupted the continuity of the matrix and produced microcracks (fracture), which caused a reduction in mechanical properties. The presence of fine prior austenite grain size and inclusions was attributed to the low DBTTs of the A steels; DBTTs of A650 and A700 alloy were -79 and -65 ℃. Tempering temperature reduction and TMP are simple, readily useable methods that can lead to a superior balance of strength and impact toughness in industry applications.
The main goal of this paper is to study the vibration of damaged core laminated annular plates with FG face sheets based on a three-dimensional theory of elasticity. The structures are made of a damaged isotropic core and two external face sheets. These skins are strengthened at the nanoscale level by randomly oriented Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and are reinforced at the microscale stage by oriented straight fibers. These reinforcing phases are included in a polymer matrix and a three-phase approach based on the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka scheme and on the Halpin-Tsai approach, which is developed to compute the overall mechanical properties of the composite material. In this study the effect of microcracks on the vibrational characteristic of the sandwich plate is considered. In particular, the structures are made by an isotropic core that undergoes a progressive uniform damage, which is modeled as a decay of the mechanical properties expressed in terms of engineering constants. These defects are uniformly distributed and affect the central layer of the plates independently from the direction, this phenomenon is known as "isotropic damage" and it is fully described by a scalar parameter. Three complicated equations of motion for the sectorial plates under consideration are semi-analytically solved by using 2-D differential quadrature method. Using the 2-D differential quadrature method in the r- and z-directions, allows one to deal with sandwich annular plate with arbitrary thickness distribution of material properties and also to implement the effects of different boundary conditions of the structure efficiently and in an exact manner. The fast rate of convergence and accuracy of the method are investigated through the different solved examples. The sandwich annular plate is assumed to have any arbitrary boundary conditions at the circular edges including simply supported, clamped and, free. Several parametric analyses are carried out to investigate the mechanical behavior of these multi-layered structures depending on the damage features, through-the-thickness distribution, and boundary conditions.
Two kinds of multifilament Bi-2223/Ag tapes, which are different in the precursor calcination temperatures, were heat treated for different time (12, 20, 30, 50, 70, or 100 h) firstly to obtain varied B2223 contents, and then followed by the same pressing and sintering cycles. The relation of the 2223 phase contents after the first sintering and the transport property of the fully processed tapes was studied. The results show that 75-80% 2223 phase formed in tapes before the first cold pressing is beneficial to get a high $I_{c}$ in the final tapes. Compensating the total heat treatment time of the tapes first sintered for 20 h to the same length as that first sintered for 50 h in the subsequent sintering stages, different $I_{c}$ enhancements were observed in these two tapes. No improvement on $I_{c}$ was found in the tape made from the powder calcined at higher temperature, whereas for the tape prepared with the lower temperature calcined powder, the $I_{c}$ was increased to the same level as that first sintered for 50 h. The 2223 contents before the intermediate mechanical work is related to the residual reactants, especially to the liquid phase, which is of vital importance to the phase conversion and healing microcracks, meanwhile, to the size and distribution of the non-superconducting secondary phases. The lower temperature calcined powder resulted in slow formation of 2223 phase, but also provided more reactants and liquid phase for the further phase conversion, as a consequence, for the Improvement of $I_{c}$. c/.
