  • It takes a long period to conduct the test on soil water retention curve (SWRC) in unsaturated soils. To improve such a problem, the high air entry disk has been replaced by micro-membrane. After the soil water retention test, the results by the micro-membrane were compared with those by the ceramic disk. Multiple samples in 5 regions were used to validate that SWRCs by micro-membrane are equivalent to those by ceramic disk. Therefore, a quick procedure based on micro-membrane has been developed, which makes it available to acquire much soil water retention data. The data of SWRCs were obtained for total 29 samples using ceramic disk or micro-membrane. For Korean weathered soils, the unsaturated hydraulic characteristics are sorted by three groups. Based on van Genuchten model, the group is divided by the parameter n, and the value of n could be correlated to the void ratio as each function.

  • This paper describes the influence on partial discharge characteristics of defects at the model XLPE/EPDM interfaces of power cable joints. The defects of void and copper which could inadvertently be present at the joint interface. We measured ${\Phi}-n,\;{\Phi}-q$ patterns by a computer-aided partial discharge measuring system. Several parameters i, e, maximum discharge $q_{max}$ [pC], average discharge q [pC/cycle], and average angle of discharge ${\Theta}g$ [deg] were found to depend upon the defect type varying applied voltage. As the result of time evaluation, partial discharges are small different at copper defects, but is decreasing obviously about 20 minutes at void defect. It considered that difference of magnitude of total positive discharge of Q+ [pC] and total negative discharge of Q- [pC] is SPMD(swarming pulsive micro discharges).

  • This study concerns flow and heat transfer characteristics of FC-72 condensing flow in a micro-channel. A computational model of condensing flow with a hydraulic diameter of 1 mm is constructed using the FLUENT computational fluid dynamics code. The computed void fraction contour plots are presented for different mass velocities. The smooth-annular, wavy-annular, transition and slug flows are observed with the model, which are quite similar to those observed in a micro-channel experiment. The computed two-phase condensing heat transfer coefficient is compared with previous empirical correlation for two-phase condensation heat transfer in micro-channels.

  • Current oil-type potential transformers for trains are filled with insulating oil, which could have problems like explosions due to rising inner pressure during train operation. Therefore, mold and dry-type potential transformers are being developed to prevent explosions. One problem in manufacturing mold-type transformers is preventing void formation around the coiled core inside the mold during epoxy filling, which could cause an electrical spark. Micro voids can remain in the resin after filling, and macro voids can occur due to the structure shape. A transformer that is being developed has a cavity at the junction of the core and the coil for better performance, and when highly viscous epoxy flows inside the cavity channel, macro voids can form inside it. Therefore, in this study, the free-surface flow of the mold filling procedure was analyzed numerically by applying the VOF method. The results were used to understand the phenomena of void formation inside the cavity and to modify the process conditions to reduce voids.

  • Mold-Flow 3 Die Stack CSP of Mold array packaging with different Gate types. As high density package option such as 3 or 4 die stacking technologies are developed, the major concerning points of mold related qualities such as incomplete mold, exposed wires and wire sweeping issues are increased because of its narrow space between die top and mold surface and higher wiring density. Full 3D rheokinetic simulation of Mold flow for 3 die stacking structure case was done with the rheological parameters acquired from Slit-Die rheometer and DSC of commercial EMC. The center gate showed severe void but corner gate showed relatively better void performance. But in case of wire sweeping related, the center gate type showed less wire sweeping than corner gate types. From the simulation results, corner gate types showed increased velocity, shear stress and mold pressure near the gate and final filling zone. The experimental Case study and the Mold flow simulation showed good agreement on the mold void and wire sweeping related prediction. Full 3D simulation methodologies with proper rheokinetic material characterization by thermal and rheological instruments enable the prediction of micro-scale mold filling behavior in the multi die stacking and other complicated packaging structures for the future application.

  • Compression tests were conducted at the various temperatures and strain rates to investigate void formation and microstructures behavior of a 1.9wt%C ultrahigh carbon steel used in forged workrolls. The microstructure, grain size and volume fraction of cementite were determined using specimens deformed in the temperature range from 800 to $1150^{\circ}C$ and strain rates from 0.01 to 10/s. It was found from the microstructural analysis that the grain size is larger at higher temperatures and lower strain rate deformation conditions. In addition, a higher volume fraction of cementite was measured at lower temperatures. The brittle blocky cementite was fractured at $800^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ regardless of strain rate. As a result, numerous new micro voids were formed in the fragmented blocky cementite. It was also found that local melting can occur at temperatures of more than $1130^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the forging temperature should be controlled between $900^{\circ}C$ and $1120^{\circ}C$. The temperature rise, which depends on the anvil stroke and velocity, was estimated through cogging simulation to find the appropriate forging temperature and to prevent local melting due to plastic work.

  • A numerical study of subcooled onset of nucleate boiling (ONB) in a micro-channel under pulsed heating using volume of fluids (VOF) model was conducted. The VOF simulation adopting the existing experimental condition is compared to the experimental data. The time to ONB was determined when the void fraction at the microheater surface first appeared. The theoretical superheat for homogeneous nucleation relatively predicts the transient ONB results of convective flow of water well based on local temperature distribution. It was found that once heat load increases at the heater, transient flow boiling starts to occur faster.

  • Effects of a nitriding treatment on the tensile and high cycle fatigue properties were investigated by conducting ion-nitriding and gas nitro-caburizing treatments on the spheroidized SCr430B medium-carbon steel and performing tensile and tension-tension high cycle fatigue tests. The nitrided samples showed much lower strength and ductility compared to those in the initial as-spheroidized state and premature fracture occurred at the hardened layers. The micro-voids in the compound layer caused fatigue crack initiation. Thus, the removal of the compound layer with micro-voids remarkably improved the fatigue resistance to even beyond that of the as-spheroidized sample.

  • Objectives: This study used micro-computed tomography (µCT) to compare voids and interfaces in single-cone obturation among AH Plus, EndoSequence BC, and prototype surface pre-reacted glass ionomer (S-PRG) sealers and to determine the percentage of sealer contact at the dentin and gutta-percha (GP) interfaces. Materials and Methods: Fifteen single-rooted human teeth were shaped using ProTaper NEXT size X5 rotary files using 2.5% NaOCl irrigation. Roots were obturated with a single-cone ProTaper NEXT GP point X5 with AH Plus, EndoSequence BC, or prototype S-PRG sealer (n = 5/group). Results: The volumes of GP, sealer, and voids were measured in the region of 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, and 6-8 mm from the apex, using image analysis of sagittal µCT scans. GP volume percentages were: AH Plus (75.5%), EndoSequence BC (87.3%), and prototype S-PRG (94.4%). Sealer volume percentages were less: AH Plus (14.3%), EndoSequence BC (6.8%), and prototype S-PRG (4.6%). Void percentages were AH Plus (10.1%), EndoSequence BC (5.9%), and prototype S-PRG (1.0%). Dentin-sealer contact ratios of AH Plus, EndoSequence BC, and prototype S-PRG groups were 82.4% ± 6.8%, 71.6% ± 25.3%, and 70.2% ± 9.4%, respectively. GP-sealer contact ratios of AH Plus, EndoSequence BC, and prototype S-PRG groups were 65.6% ± 29.1%, 80.7% ± 25.8%, and 87.0% ± 8.6%, respectively. Conclusions: Prototype S-PRG sealer created a low-void obturation, similar to EndoSequence BC sealer with similar dentin-sealer contact (> 70%) and GP-sealer contact (> 80%). Prototype S-PRG sealer presented comparable filling quality to EndoSequence BC sealer.
