  • We newly designed and manufactured a new arranging system for a three-dimensional artificial crystal of monosized micro particles. In this system, a robotic micro-manipulator accurately locates the spherical particle onto the lattice point, and subsequently fiber lasers micro-weld the contact points between the neighboring particles. Actually, one- and two-dimensional arrays were constructed using monosized tin particles with the diameter of 400 m. Moreover, due to optimization of the process parameters, we successfully constructed the artificial crystals of simple cubic and diamond structures. In particular, the diamond structure which can represent a large photonic band gap is expected to progress toward a practical photonic crystal device.

  • Electrochemical discharge machining (ECDM) has been found to be suitable for the micro-hole machining of nonconductive materials such as ceramics or glass compared with existing conventional and also non-conventional machining methods. However this machining process has some problems such as low geometric accuracy and low machining efficiency due to the random spark generation at the end of the electrode. This paper proposes the methods to improve the geometric accuracy of micro-hole using powder mixed ECDM process. The experimental results show the effects of powder producing improved geometric accuracy of machined hole and decreased concentration of spark energy.

  • The old technique of sandblasting which has been used for paint of scale removing, deburring and glass decorating has recently been developed into a powder blasting technique for brittle materials, capable of producing micro structures larger than $100{\mu}m$. Recently, this technique is applied to fabrication of the glass cap for OELD packaging. But, micro crack is generated on the blasted glass, which cause to decrease fracture strength. In this paper, we investigated the effect of blasting parameters on surface characteristics, surface shape and fracture strength of the powder blasted glass surface.

  • In order to understand the mechanism of the synthesis of particles using a plasma torch, it is necessary to understand the reaction mechanisms using a computer simulation. In this study, we have developed a simulation method to combine the Lagrangian scheme to follow microparticles and a nodal method to treat nanoparticles categorized with different particle sizes. The Lagrangian scheme includes the Coulomb force which affects the dynamics of larger particles. In contrast, the nodal method is adequate for the nanoparticles because the charge effect is negligible for nanoparticles but the number of nanoparticles is much larger than that of microparticles. This method is helpful to understand the dynamics and growth mechanism of micro- and nano-powder mixture observed in the experiment.

  • Gas surface treatment is considered to be effective for titanium because of its high reactivity. In this study, we investigated the gas nitriding mechanism in titanium sintered parts produced by metal powder injection molding (MIM) process. The microstructure and nitrogen content of sintered MIM parts were greatly affected by nitriding conditions. Nitriding process strongly depended on the specimen size, for example, the size of micro metal injection molding (${\mu}-MIM$) product is so small and the specific surface is so large that the mechanical and functional properties can be modified by nitriding.

  • A non-equilibrium powder metallurgy processing such as an MA/SPS (Mechanical Alloying / Spark Plasma Sintering) process is examined in a Ti-48moll%Al. TiAl intermetallic compound is a potential light-weight/high-temperature structural material. One of the major problems, however, limiting the practical use of the material is its poor workability. From this point, the powder metallurgy (PM) processing route has been attractive alternative of the conventional processing for such material The MA/SPS process is able to apply to a LIGA process. Optimization of the pseudo-superplasticity enables to fabricate micro-parts made of fine grained ceramics composites of TiAl by the LIGA process.

  • The global metal injection moulding industry is getting mature. The technology is on its way to grow from a niche technology to a widely accepted manufacturing process. This paper addresses the latest technological trends in MIM. Challenges in materials development as well as the current limits of the technology are discussed. Trends in processing like 2-component injection moulding and micro injection moulding are presented. The European MIM market situation is described and some key factors for business success are addressed. In the discussion of future business opportunities best practice examples are included.

  • Metallic porous materials have many interesting combinations of physical and geometrical properties with very low specific weight or high gas permeability. In this study, highly porous Cu foam is successfully fabricated by a slurry coating process. The Cu foam is fabricated specifically by changing the coating amount and the type of polyurethane foam used as a template. The processing parameters and pore characteristics are observed to identify the key parameters of the slurry coating process and the optimized morphological properties of the Cu foam. The pore characteristics of Cu foam are investigated by scanning electron micrographs and micro-CT analyzer, and air permeability of the Cu foam is measured by capillary flow porometer. We confirmed that the characteristics of Cu foam can be easily controlled in the slurry coating process by changing the microstructure, porosity, pore size, strut thickness, and the cell size. It can be considered that the fabricated Cu foams show tremendous promise for industrial application.
