Analysis of Multiple Network Accessibilities and Commercial Space Use in Metro Station Areas: An Empirical Case Study of Shanghai, China

  • Against the background of the rapid development of the Shanghai Metro network, this paper attempts to establish an analytical approach to evaluate the impact of multiple transport network accessibilities on commercial space use in metro station areas. Ten well-developed metro station areas in central Shanghai are selected as samples. Commercial space floor area and visitors in these areas are collected. Using ArcGIS and Spatial Design Network Analysis, the Shanghai Metro network and road network are modeled to compute diversified transport accessibilities. Evidence from land use and commercial space floor area within a 0-to-500-meter buffer zone of stations is consistent with location and land-use theory: commercial land use is concentrated closer to stations. Correlation analysis suggests that hourly visitors to the shopping mall are mainly influenced by metro network accessibility, while retail stores and restaurants are affected by both metro and pedestrian accessibility.

  • Construction of metro transportation infra is a large-scale project requiring tremendous financial resources. This study suggests operation method to use for rapid transit line existing infra such as Gyeongbu line and spare line capacity following second phase KTX construction. Reviewing various constraints of metro rapid transit operation, we found that the conditions for metro rapid transit operation are already satisfied in Daegu area, just like the case of Gyeongbu line in Seoul Metro area. Also, the evaluation of the economic feasibility of metro rapid transit operation in Daegu area shows that B/C is about 2.4, which implies that there is sufficient economic feasibility. According to the result of sensitivity analysis, the project is economically feasible unless the passenger demand decreases 15% and construction costs increases more than 70%. B/C is evaluated large because the utilization of already exiting infra lowers the initial cost. As one of mass transportation system of large capacity, metro rapid transit can generate significant spillover effect: It will strengthen competitiveness of metro area by connecting cities within the area and by extending one-day life zone of the area, to say nothing of the benefit of improving traffic condition. The construction of metro rapid transit network is necessary for the mass transportation system of Yeongnam area as well as Daegu area, and it may work as a starting point for uniting Daegu and Gyeongbuk and strengthening regional competitiveness.

Physical Topology Discovery for Metro Ethernet Networks

  • Automatic discovery of physical topology plays a crucial role in enhancing the manageability of modern metro Ethernet networks. Despite the importance of the problem, earlier research and commercial network management tools have typically concentrated on either discovering logical topology, or proprietary solutions targeting specific product families. Recent works have demonstrated that network topology can be determined using the standard simple network management protocol (SNMP) management information base (MIB), but these algorithms depend on address forwarding table (AFT) entries and can find only spanning tree paths in an Ethernet mesh network. A previous work by Breibart et al. requires that AFT entries be complete; however, that can be a risky assumption in a realistic Ethernet mesh network. In this paper, we have proposed a new physical topology discovery algorithm which works without complete knowledge of AFT entries. Our algorithm can discover a complete physical topology including inactive interfaces eliminated by the spanning tree protocol in metro Ethernet networks. The effectiveness of the algorithm is demonstrated by implementation.

Channel modeling based on multilayer artificial neural network in metro tunnel environments

  • Traditional deterministic channel modeling is accurate in prediction, but due to its complexity, improving computational efficiency remains a challenge. In an alternative approach, we investigated a multilayer artificial neural network (ANN) to predict large-scale and small-scale channel characteristics in metro tunnels. Simulated high-precision training datasets were obtained by combining measurement campaign with a ray tracing (RT) method in a metro tunnel. Performance on the training data was used to determine the number of hidden layers and neurons of the multilayer ANN. The proposed multilayer ANN performed efficiently (10 s for training; 0.19 ms for prediction), and accurately, with better approximation of the RT data than the single-layer ANN. The root mean square errors (RMSE) of path loss (2.82 dB), root mean square delay spread (0.61 ns), azimuth angle spread (3.06°), and elevation angle spread (1.22°) were impressive. These results demonstrate the superior computing efficiency and model complexity of ANNs.

  • Optical telecommunication has been growing at a rate that exceeds even the "Moore′s Law". However, while the electronic revolution has allowed everyone to have his/her own PC, the optical revolution is still confined to the long-haul network such that the individual end users are still connected to an electronic metro/access networks. However, given the rapid increase in the data traffic (e.g., multimedia), the optical edge that separates the individual end users from optical networks will eventually have to include the metro/acces networks.   • A certain amount of random vibration excitation to subway track is caused by subway operation. This excitation is transmitted through track foundation, tunnel, soil medium, and ground building to the ground and ground structure, causing vibration. The vibration affects ground building. In this study, the results of ANSYS numerical simulation was used to establish back-propagation (BP) neural network model. Moreover, a back-propagation neural network model consisting of five input neurons, one hidden layer, 11 hidden-layer neurons, and three output neurons was used to analyze and calculate the vertical Z-vibration level of New Capital's ground buildings of Qingdao Metro phase I Project (Line M3). The Z-vibration level under different working conditions was calculated from monolithic roadbed, steel-spring floating slab roadbed, and rubber-pad floating slab roadbed under the working condition of center point of 0-100 m. The steel-spring floating slab roadbed was used in the New Capital area to monitor the subway operation vibration in this area. Comparing the monitoring and prediction results, it was found that the prediction results have a good linear relationship with lower error. The research results have good reference and guiding significance for predicting vibration caused by subway operation.

Design Issues on a Metropolitan WDM Ring Network

  • A metro ring network using WDM technology requires many issues to be considered even though its transmission distance is shorter and its transmission capacity is lower than a long-haul WDM system. Unlike a long-haul WDM system, which is basically point-to-point configuration, a metro ring network usually equips with capabilty of wavelength reconfiguration. Therefore network performance considering crosstalk within OADM and the network behavior when the ring network is closed should be analyzed before implemented. We discussed some of results analyzed for the issues. Furthermore we proposed a novel method to design a dispersion map for a ring network, and demonstrated the methodology with an exemplary 8-node ring network of 399km circumference.

  • Metro Ethernet 서비스는 기존의 라우터나 광전송장비를 거치지 않고 기가비트 이더넷으로 구성된 망을 이용해 스위치만으로 LAN과 같이 연결하는 서비스이다. 이 메트로 이더넷은 기존 SONET과는 달리 패킷교환 방식이므로 링크 대역폭의 효율적인 공유, 저렴한 칩과 장비, 사용자가 원하는 다양한 대역폭 할당, 피리고 인터넷 사용자의 증가와 원하는 대역폭의 증가로 등장하게 되었다. Metro Fiber Ethernet에 적용되는 기술로는 패킷분류화, 포트전송율 제어, QoS, 망복구 능련, 이더넷 VPN, 트래픽 엔지니어링 등이 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 기술들을 이용한 Metro Ethernet을 국방망에 적용함으로써 초고속 국방 통신망 구축을 제안하고자 한다.

Performance Analysis of Metro WDM Star Network based on An Arrayed Waveguide Grating

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of a reliable, scalable, and cost-effective switchless wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network based on an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG). The network efficiency is significantly increased by spatially reusing wavelengths and exploiting multiple free spectral ranges (FSRs) of the AWG employed in the architecture. We have analyzed the performance of this architecture by simulating in $Optsim^{TM}$ with a control channel which exploits the broadband light source, i.e., an LED. The data was successfully transmitted to a distance of 30 km without using any EDFA's in the network, with a reasonable BER of $4.0530{\times}10^{-14}$.
