Synthesis of Nickel and Copper Nanopowders by Plasma Arc Evaporation

  • In this study, the synthesis of nickel nanoparticles and copper nanospheres for the potential applications of MLCC electrode materials has been studied by plasma arc evaporation method. The change in the broad distribution of the size of nickel and copper nanopowders is successfully controlled by manifesting proper mixture of gas ambiance for plasma generation in the size range of 20 to 200 nm in diameter. The factors affecting the mean diameter of the nanopowder was studied by changing the composition of reactive gases, indicating that nitrogen enhances the formation of larger particles compared to hydrogen gas. The morphologies and particle sizes of the metal nanoparticles were observed by SEM, and ultrathin oxide layers on the powder surface generated during passivation step have been confirmed using TEM. The metallic FCC structure of the nanoparticles was confirmed using powder X-ray diffraction method.

  • Pulsed wire evaporation (PWE) method is known as the promising production-technique for nanopowders. In this study, we developed and modified the previous single wire explosion equipment to the simultaneous two-wire explosion one for the fabrication of alloy or mixture of nano metallic powder. First of all, both the theoretical and empirical background of pulsed wire explosion of single wire were summarized, and compared with our experimental results for Cu and Al single wlre explosion. After then, the simultaneous wire evaporation equipment was designed, constructed, and tested. The current and voltage behavior were well matched between the calculated ones from the circuit equations, and the experimental results from simultaneous explosion of Cu and Al wire.

  • The preparation of composite powders for plasma spraying by an in-house designed mechanofusion process is investigated. Results show that dry particle coating depends on the chemical and mechanical properties of powders. In metal/oxide and metal/oxide/carbide powder mixtures, fine ceramic particles coat the surface of the metallic coarser particles. A nearly rounded shape of the final composite particles is induced by the mechanical energy input with no formation of new phases. However with the carbide/metal powdered system, only an intimate mixture of components is achieved. It is suggested that the coating mechanism is governed by agglomeration and rolling phenomena.

나노상 $SnO_2$ 가스센서에서 센서검지특성에 미치는 결정구조의 영향 (Effect of Crystal Structures on the Sensing Properties of Nanophase $SnO_2$ Gas Sensor)

  • Metallic tin powder with diameter less than 50 nm was synthesized by inert gas condensation method and subsequently oxidized to tin oxide ($SnO_2$) along the two heat-treatment routes. The $SnO_2$ powder of single phase with a tetragonal structure was obtained by the heat-treatment route with intermediate annealing step-wise oxidation, whereas the $SnO_2$ powder with mixture of orthorhombic and tetragonal phases was obtained by the heat-treatment route without intermediate annealing (direct oxidation). $SnO_2$ gas sensors fabricated from the nano-phase $SnO_2$ powders were investigated by structural observations as well as measurement of electrical resistance. The $SnO_2$ gas sensors fabricated from the mixed-phase powder exhibited much lower sensitivity against $H_2$ gas than those fabricated from the powder of tetragonal phase. Reduced sensitivity of gas sensors with the new orthorhombic phase was attributed to detrimental effects of phase boundaries between orthorhombic and tetragonal phases and many twin boundaries on the charge mobility.

비정질 기지 복합재 코팅층의 미세조직 분석 및 기계적 거동 (Analysis and Mechanical Behavior of Coating Layer in Metallic Glass Matrix Composite)

  • 비정질합금이 가지고 있는 우수한 기계적 성질과 화학적 특성을 부품소재에 표면개질을 목적으로 고속화염 용사법으로 대면적 코팅층을 형성하였고 내열성이 높은 자융성합금과 초경합금 성분들을 적절히 혼합하여 비정질기지 복합재료를 제조하여 코팅들의 미세조직 관찰과 나노인덴테이션을 이용한 미세표면의 기계적 거동을 분석하였다. 각 코팅층의 미세조직을 관찰한 결과, 단일상 비정질 코팅에는 미용융 입자와 lamellae 영역이 존재하고 자융성합금이 고용된 복합재에는 in-situ $Cr_2Ni_3$ 석출물, 자융성합금과 초경합금성분이 함께 혼합된 코팅층은 석출물과 ex-situ WC 강화입자가 공존하였다. 이들 미세표면의 기계적 거동은 제 2 상이 고용된 비정질 기지 복합재의 코팅층의 기계적 특성이 전체적으로 향상되었다.

초음파분무 연소법에 의한 나노결정 ZnO 초미분체 제조 (Preparation of Nanocrystalline ZnO Ultrafine Powder Using Ultrasonic Spraying Combustion Method)

  • For mass product of nanocrystalline ZnO ultrafine powders, self-sustaining combustion process(SCP) and ultrasonic spray combustion method(USCM) were applied at the same time. Ultrasonic spray gun was attached on top of the vertical type furnace. The droplet was sprayed into reaction zone of the furnace to form SCP which produces spherical shape with soft agglomerate crystalline ZnO particles. To characterize formed particles, fuel and oxidizing agent for SCP were used glycine and zinc nitrate or zinc hydroxide. Respectively, with changing combustion temperature and mixture ratio of oxidizing agent and fuel, the best ultrasonic spray conditions were obtained. To observe ultrasonic spray effect, two types of powder synthesis processes were compared. One was directly sprayed into furnace from the precursor solution (Type A), the other directly was heated on the hot plate without using spray gun (Type B). Powder obtained by type A was porous sponge shape with heavy agglomeration, but powder obtained using type B was finer primary particle size, spherical shape with weak agglomeration and bigger value of specific surface area. 9/ This can be due to much lower reaction temperature of type B at ignition time than type A. Synthesized nanocrystalline ZnO powders at the best ultrasonic spray conditions have primary particle size in range 20~30nm and specific surface area is about 20m$^2$/g.

Cu계 및 Ni계 비정질 합금 분말을 이용한 비정질기지 복합재의 제조 및 특성 (Synthesis and Properties of Amorphous Matrix Composites using Cu-based/Ni-based Amorphous Powders)

  • This work is to present a new synthesis of metallic glass (MG)/metallic glass (MG) composites using gas atomization and spark plasma sintering (SPS) processes. The MG powders of $Cu_{54}Ni_6Zr_{22}Ti_{18}$ (CuA) and $Ni_{59}Zr_{15}Ti_{13}Nb_7Si_3Sn_2Al_1$(NiA) as atomized consist of fully amorphous phases and present a different thermal behavior; $T_g$ (glass transition temperature) and $T_x$ (crystallization temperature) are 716K and 765K for the Cu base powder, but 836K and 890K for the Ni base ones, respectively. SPS process was used to consolidate the mixture of each amorphous powder, being $CuA/10\%NiA\;and\;NiA/10\%CuA$ in weight. The resultant phases were Cu crystalline dispersed NiA matrix composites as well as NiA phase dispersed CuA matrix composites, depending on the SPS temperatures. Effect of the second phases embedded in the MG matrix was discussed on the micro-structure and mechanical properties.

PROPOSE NEW MIXTURE TARGET FOR LOW-TEMPERATURE AND HIGH- RATE DEPOSITION OF PZT THIN FILMS BY REACTIVE SPUTTERING

  • A rf reactive sputter deposition technique was adopted to deposit ferroelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films with high rate from a ZrTi alloy target combined with PbO pellets. Deposition characterisitics including the effects of PbO are ratio were discussed. A new deposition mode called the quasi-metallic mode was observed. Perovskite PZT films were prepared at a growth temperature as low as$ 450^{\circ}C$. However, because the target structure is unstable, weproposed a mixture target consisted of Zr, Ti and PbO. Fundamental experiments were investigated using the powder target. Perovskite PZT film could be obtained at $450^{\circ}C$ with better electrical properties also.

  • $Ti_2AlN$ composites are a laminated compounds that posses unique combination of typical ceramic properties and typical metallic(Ti alloy) properties. In this paper, the powder synthesis, SPS sintering, composite characteristics and machinability evaluation were systematically conducted. The random orientation characteristics and good crystallization of the $Ti_2AlN$ phase are observed. The electrical and thermal conductivity of $Ti_2AlN$ is higher than that of Ti6242 alloy. A machining test was carried out to compare the effect of material properties on micro electrical discharge drilling for $Ti_2AlN$ composite and Ti6242 alloy. Also, mixture table as a kind of tables of orthogonal arrays was used to know how parameter is main effective at experimental design. Consequently, hybrid $Ti_2AlN$ ceramic composites showed good machining time and electrode wear shape under micro ED-drilling process. This conclusion proves the feasibility in the industrial applications.

  • This paper describes the Manufacturing process and electrical properties of ac thick film electroluminescent lamps which made of the mixture of ZnS:Cu,Cl phosphor powder and polymer binding materials. The phosphor layer is sandwiched between two electrodes, one of which is transparent, and is supported by a substrate. The substrate may be glass or flexible plastic or it may be metallic. In this study we manufactured suspend layer which consists of ZnS:Cu,Cl powder suspended in a NBR. As yet our results are behind other commercial product in electrical properties and brightness. However they can be improved by selection of appropriate polymer binding materials, development of blending technology.
