  • The industrial minerals play an important role in mining sector. More than 70 % of total mineral production come from industrial mineral sector. This paper reviews geological occurrence of kaolin, pyrophyllite and limestone, and current demand-supply status of major industrial minerals in the Republic of Korea. The kaolin is mainly distributed in the Kyeongsang province, formed by deep weathering of Precambrian anorthosite on mountainside of gentle slope. The pyrophyllite mainly occurs in the Kyeongsang and Chulla provinces, formed by hydrothermal alteration of late Cretaceous andesitic and rhyolitic rocks. Pyrophyllite comprises massive and lenticular bodies and contains minor amounts of kaolin, alunite and pyrite, in some places andalusite and illite. The limestone(Great Limestone Series of Cambrian age) is distributed widely in the Kwangwon and Chungcheong provinces. The limestone bodies are approzimately 70 km long and 3 km wide, elongated NE-ward, and show high grade of CaO content. In 1992, the self-sufficiency ratio of 44 nonfuel (metallic and non-metallic) minerals was no more than 30 percent. However, the ratio of 27 industrial minerals (non-metallic) represents high value of about 72 percent. The export/productjon ratio of the industrial minerals shows decreasing patterns from 12.2 % in 1983 to 4.2 % in 1992. Also the import/production ratio shows rapidly decreasing pattern from 84 % in 1983 to 38.2 % in 1992.

  • The accelerated industrialization of Korean economy over the last couple of decades has brought an era of mass consumption of mineral commodities. This increased consumption has been satisfied mainly by imports from abroad. South Korea has about 50 useful mineral commodities for the mineral industry, among 330 kinds of minerals described. In 1988 the self-sufficiency ratio of domestic demand for 44 non-fuel(metallic and non-metallic) minerals as a whole was no more than 29 percent. The ratio for 26 non-metallic minerals was much higher, about 66 percent. On the other hand, the ratio for 18 metallic minerals was relatively very low, about 6.3 percent. The correlation between GNP and mineral consumption in South Korea shows well the slow down patterns during the last two decades.

  • It is well known that PCB (Printed Circuit Board) is a complex mixture of various metals mixed with various types of plastics and ceramics. In this study, high temperature pyre-metallurgical process was investigated to extract valuable metallic components from the PCB scrap. For this purpose, PCB scrap was shredded and oxidized to remove plastic materials, and then, quantitative analyses were made. After the oxidation of the PCB scrap, $30.6wt\%SiO_2,\;19.3wt\%Al_2O_3\;and\;14wt{\%}CaO$ were analyzed as major oxides, and thereafter, a typical composition of $32wt\%SiO_2-20wt\%Al_2O_3-38wt{\%}CaO-10wt\%MgO$ was chosen as a basic slag system for the separation of metallic components. Moreover a size effect of crushed PCB scrap was also investigated. During experiments a high frequency induction furnace was used to melt and separate metallic components. As a result, it was found that the size of oxidized PCB scrap was needed to be less 0.9 m to make a homogeneous liquid slag and to recycle metallic components over $95\%$.

  • As the spirit of reconciliation between the two Koreas ripens, the integration of mineral names is required in preparing the reunification between the South and North Koreas. Currently, mineral names in Korean do not adopt the guideline for romanization of Korean that was proposed by the National Institute of the Korean Language (NIKL), and different names are often used for an identical mineral species. Here, for mineral names in Korean, we suggest using (1) the suffix, "$s{\breve{o}}k$", both for metallic and non-metallic minerals, (2) names in the NIKL example-list if available, (3) the suffix "$s{\breve{o}}k$" for minerals whose names are based on the names of persons or localities.

  • Domestic gold mine tailings, generally, contain a lot of non-metallic silica and clay minerals. These minerals can be separated from the tailings by various physical separation methods and used as raw materials for cements and ceramic products. In these physical separation procedures, metallic complex sulfides, in which Au and metallic constituents such as Pb, As and Fe were concentrated, were obtained as a by-product. These metallic constituents should be removed or separated from the by-product to extract Au efficiently. In this work, removal and separation processes of Pb, As, and Fe from the by-product were investigated. Pb was removed to under 3% by using alkaline oxidative leaching at the leaching condition of $120^{\circ}C$, 2M NaOH, 100psi $Po_2$, 250r.p.m., 4 wt.% solid and 30 min. leaching time. The leached residue was roasted and separated magnetically to obtain a non-magnetic product contained <0.2% As, <3% Fe and high concentrated Au more than 8,000 ppm.

  • The reductive precipitation of platinum and palladium in hydrochloric acid solution using hydrazine as a reducing agent was investigated. The reductive precipitation ratios of platinum and palladium increased when increasing the stoichiometric ratio for reducing agent, precipitation time, and pH. The precipitation ratio of platinum was much lower than that of palladium. This is the reason the reaction rate of $PtCl{_6}^{2-}{\rightarrow}PtCl{_4}^{2-}$ at the reduction reaction step of $PtCl{_6}^{2-}{\rightarrow}PtCl{_4}^{2-}{\rightarrow}Pt$ is very slow. The purity of platinum precipitated was very affected by metallic impurities, while it was possible to precipitate the high purity palladium since the precipitation rate of palladium was relatively fast. At the pH of 1.3, the precipitation temperature of $25^{\circ}C$, and the addition amounts of the hydrazine of 10 and 1.75 times the stoichiometric ratio, the reductive precipitation ratios of platinum and palladium from their hydrochloric acid solutions containing 2,000 ppm were 98.5% and 99.9% in 30 min, respectively.

  • A study was made on the feature extraction for non-metallic one deposits and their related geology using the Remote Sensing and Airborne Radiometric data. The area chosen is around the Haenam area, where dickite and Quarzite mines are distributed in. The geology of the area consists mainly of Cretaceous volcanics and PreCambrian metamorphic. The methods applied are study on the reflectance characteristics of minerals and rocks sampled in the study area, and the feature extraction extraction of histogram normalized images for Landsat TM and Airborne Radiometric data, and finally evaluation of applicability of some useful pattern recognition techniques for regional lithological mapping. As a result, reflectances of non-metallic minerals are much higher than rock samples in the area. However, low grade dickites are slightly higher than rock samples, probably due to their greyish colour and also their textural features which may scatter the reflectance and may be capable of capturing much hychoryl ions. The reflectances of rock samples may depend on the degree of whiteness of samples. The outcrops or mine dumps in the study area were most effectively extracted on the histogram normalized image of TM Band 1, 2 and 3, due to their high reflectivity. The Masking technique using the above bands may be the most effective and the natural colour composite may provide some success as well. The colour composite image of PCA may also be effective in extracting geological features, and airborne radiometric data may be useful to some degree as an complementary tool.

  • There are more than 2000 minerals on earth, and it has been implemented in various fields such as environment, architecture, livestock, chemistry, pharmaceuticals. Clay minerals are considered that they can change the physical and chemical properties through the adsorption and release of metal ions. Although domestic deposit of non-metallic mineral resources is approximately ninety-six billion tons, its application is limited and has hardly been used in high value-added industries involved in medicine, medical supplies, and functional food materials. Bentonite and zeolite are already used for cosmetic purposes and also used in living goods and packing materials. However, direct application to the food industry is relatively very rare. Since records regarding the intake of minerals for foods and medicines are found in the old literatures, the utilization of non-metallic minerals as food materials appears to be highly profitable. According to the trends in patent research for food and mineral resources, the company plays a main role for the development of the food containing non-metallic minerals in USA, and the trends confirms that this industry is emerging. Here, we provided the information about domestic and foreign patent trend for food industries involved in mineral resources and the application of mineral resources in the food industries. We also covered the domestic regulation regarding usage of mineral resources in food, and proposed domestic application plan for food production using mineral resources in the future.
