Arabidopsis AHL gene contains 4 exons encoding a putative protein highly homologous to the yeast salt-sensitive enzyme HAL2, a 3'(2'),5'-bisphosphate nucleotidase involving in reductive sulfate assimilation. AHL cDNA complemented yeast met22 (hal2) mutant. AHL fusion protein expressed in E. coli exhibited $Mg^{2+}$-dependent, 3'-phosphoadenosine 5'-phosphate (PAP)-specific phosphatase activity. $Li^+,\;Na^+,\;K^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ ions inhibit the enzyme activity by competing with $Mg^{2+}$ for the active site of the enzyme. The enzyme activity was also sensitive to ${\mu}M$ concentrations of toxic heavy metal ions such as $Cd^{2+},\;Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$, but was not recovered by addition of more $Mg^{2+}$ ions, suggesting that these ions inactivate the enzyme with a mechanism other than competition with $Mg^{2+}$ ions. Inhibition of the AHL enzyme activity may result in accumulation of PAP, which is highly toxic to the cell. Thus, the AHL enzyme could be one of the intial targets of heavy metal toxicity in plants.

A theory for the material transports through ion exchange membrane has been developed on the basis of nonequilibrium thermodynamics by removing the assumption of solvent flow in the previous paper and applied to a detailed study of the ionic transport properties of new charged mosaic membrane(CMM) system. The CMM having two different fixed charges in the polymer membrane indicated unique selective transport behavior then ion-exchange membrane. The separation behavior of ion transport across the CMM with a parallel array of positive and negative functional charges were investigated. It was well-known the analysis of the volume flux and solute flux based on nonequilibrium thermodynamics. Our suggests preferential salt transport across the charged mosaic membranes. Transport properties of heavy metal ions, $Mg^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$and sucrose system across the charged mosaic membrane were estimated. As a result, we were known metal salts transport depended largely on the CMM. The reflection coefficient indicated the negative value that suggested preferential material transport and was independent of charged mosaic membrane thickness.
Temporal changes of metal solubility have been repeatedly observed in soils equilibrated with metal salt solutions. This phenomenon is known as aging, yet factors that affect the degree of metal aging remain largely unexamined. In this study, we compared the extent of aging on metal partitioning depending on soil, metal, and metal loading. Five soils spiked with four levels of Cd (2.5-20 mg ${kg}^{-1}$), Cu, and Zn (50-400 mg ${kg}^{-1}$) salt solutions were aged in the laboratory up to 1 year. The partitioning coefficient ($K_d$) of each metal was calculated from the ratio of total to dissolved metal concentration in samples collected at times ranging from 1 day to 1 year. The highest $K_d$ values for Cd, Cu and Zn were recorded in a Histosol, Andisol, and fine-textured Alfisol, respectively, whereas the lowest $K_d$ was recorded for an Oxisol and coarsetextured Alfisol. For all soils, a pattern of increasing Kd with aging was evident for Cd and Zn, but not Cu. Rapid Cu sorption was limited when dissolved organic matter was high in soils. In highly-retentive soils, $K_d$ values seemed to be insensitive to metal loading, although a longer period was required for the higher metal loadings to reach the same degree of metal aging as the lower loadings. In soils with low sorption capacity, the $K_d$ values were determined more by metal loading than by aging. Therefore, marked differences can be expected in the degree of metal aging in spiked soils by the soil type, metal and amount of metal added.
A basic objective is the preparation and surface studies of supported molten salt catalysts because molten salts can stay as the liquid phase in the range of the ordinary reaction temperature. Many kinds of metal salt mixtures for the formation of molten salt phase are appliable but CuCl and KCl were selected in this study because Cu is considered catalytically reactive in many reactons. The loading of the molten salt was selected as 25 vol% of the total pore volume of ${\gamma}-alumina$ to provide reasonable exposed surface area. The surface structure of catalysts containing molten salts in the ${\gamma}-alumina$ was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). CuCl and KCl were added into the ${\gamma}-alumina$ using concentrated hydrochloric acid solution by the impregnation technique. The surfaces of the prepared catalysts before and after heat treatments were compared and they suggested that the heat treatment of catalysts helped the formation of molten-salt although the surface compositions of CuCl and KCl were not uniform.
The sun-dried, refined, and processed salt (roasted and bamboo salt) manufactured in Chonbuk province were analyzed their chemical compositions and minerals including heavy metals for safety evaluation. Average content of each eomponent as the lowest and the highest were as follows-pH; 6.80 (refined) to 10.35 (bamboo), water content; 0.13% (bamboo) to 10.7% (sun-dried), sodium chloride; 96.6% (roasted) to 84.3% (sun-dried), 804; 0.59% (bamboo) to 3.0% (sun-dried), water insoluble matters; 0.001% (refined) to 1.98% (bamboo), acid inoluble matters; <0.001% (refined) to 0.21% (bamboo), calcium; 0.038% (refined) to 0.213% (sun-dried), magnesium; 0.111% (refmed) to 1.078% (sun-dried), lead; 0.45 ppm (refmed) to 1.15 ppm (bamboo). Cadminium, arsenic and mercury were not detected in all salt. As the analytical results, all salts were differtent in their chemical compositions and safe in view of heavy metals.

In the marine area, the salt concentration in the soil increases, and the inland heavy metal pollution increases the damage of plants. In the inland industrial development area, researches on the genetic resources of plants together with the heavy metal accumulation of Co, Ni, Zn, and so on are required. Both of these problems have caused scientists to work hard to find plants that are likely to cause stress in plant roots. In this study, seeds of Arabis stelleri var. japonica collected near the shore were used for germination. The growth and development and tolerance of both Arabis and Arabidopsis seeds were investigated under laboratory culture conditions. As a result, Arabis showed resistance about 3 times in 250 mM nickle and cobalt, and more than 4 times in 1 mM zinc when compared to Arabidopsis. The tolerance of Arabis to Na salts increased by 20% or more at 50 mM concentration and Arabis was resistant to heavy metals and salt concentration. The accumulation of Na ions in the body was measured as a preparation for studying the intracellular mechanism. As a result, it showed a further decrease in resistance to ground water roots. It is considered that the activity of the exporting gene is important rather than the mechanism of accumulation.

Trace metal ions such as $Cd^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, and $Zn^{2+}$ in a highly saline sample were subjected to on-line complexation with 4-(2-thiazolylazo) resorcinol (TAR) dissolved in a background electrolyte (BGE) under transient isotachophoresis (TITP) conditions. A long plug of the saline sample, containing the trace metal ions but devoid of TAR, was injected into a coated capillary filled with a BGE composed of 150 mM 2-(cyclohexylamino) ethanesulfonic acid (CHES) and 110 mM triethylamine (TEA) at pH 9.7. Since the electrophoretic mobility of TAR fell between the mobilities of the anionic leading electrolyte ($Cl^-$ in the sample) and the anionic terminating background electrolyte ($CHES^-$), a highly concentrated zone of TAR from the BGE was formed at the rear of the sample matrix and then the metal cations toward the cathode were swept by isotachophoretically assisted on-line complexation (IAOC) between the metal ions and the isotachophoretically stacked TAR. As a result, anionic metal-TAR complexes were formed efficiently, which satisfy the TITP conditions between $Cl^-$ and $CHES^-$. The enrichment factors of metal ions including $Cd^{2+}$ were up to 780-fold compared to a conventional CZE mode using absorbance detection. The detection limits were 17 nM, 15 nM, and 27 nM for $Ni^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Cd^{2+}$ in a 250 mM NaCl matrix, respectively. Our method was successfully applied to the analysis of urine samples without desalting.
Polymer-metal complexed membranes were prepared by solvent evaporation method using ethylcellulose, platinum(II)acetylacetonate, and rhodium(III)acetylacetonate. The various composition of metal salt(0.3-4.0 wt%) were employed to obtain the optimum performance of final membrane. EC-metal complexed membranes were characterized by FTIR and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) to observe the morphology and the performance of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane gases was tested. It was shown that the metal salts enhanced the permeability of all gases without decrease of selectivity. However, it was found that Pt had more effects on the permeability of oxygen and nitrogen gases while Rh had more effects on the permeability of carbon dioxide and methane gases. EC-Pt complexed membrane(Pt 1.0 wt%) even showed the enhanced selectivity of oxygen/nitrogen(37%) due to the affinity characteristic of Pt to oxygen.
Sea urchin roe obtained from Anthocidaris crassispina and Pseudocentrotus depressus was briefly salt-fermented (5%), followed by ethanol treatment (1%) and the physicochemical properties as well as antioxidant activity were investigated. Compared to raw sea urchin roes, the salted one showed a significantly low amount of water (p<0.001) high salinity (p<0.05), ash content (p<0.001) and Na content (p<0.001). With salt-fermentation, the redness (p<0.05) and yellowness (p<0.001) of roe decreased noticeably, indicating the decomposition of endogenous carotenoids. Accordingly, the salted roe showed a lower DPPH radical scavenging activity than its unsalted counterpart. Additionally, it showed a significantly lower metal-chelating activity (p<0.05) and metal chelator content (e.g. ortho-phenolics) displayed by a negligible difference in titratable acidity. The salted roe showed significantly increased hardness (p<0.05) and total reducing capacity (p<0.001), which were attributed to the protein coagulation and the release of antioxidants bound to macromolecules after the ethanol treatment, respectively.
Chemical composition, and mineral and heavy metal contents of Yeomsan and Baekso sun-dried salts (1-5-year-old) were determined. Moisture contents (Yeomsan, 6.07-17.02%; Baekso, 4.29-16.15%) and pH (Yeomsan, 5.92-6.31; Baekso, 5.52-6.23) decreased as age of salts increased, while NaCl contents (Yeomsan, 80.35-92.74%; Baekso, 81.06-94.58%) increased with increasing storage period of salts. Older salts had lower content of water-insoluble matters. Nitrate content was not affected by aging of salts, whereas nitrite content was lower in older salts. Sulfate content of sun-dried salt decreased with aging of salt. Average concentrations (ppm wet weight) of major minerals in Yeomsan and Baekso sun-dried salts were: Mg, Mg, 1002-119; K, 1062-3411; Ca, 1503-3437; Li, 25-101; Ge, 8.35-0.21; Si, 43.99-6.48; and Mn, 6.79-1.55. Mineral content generally decreased with salt aging. Among heavy metals, Hg was not detected in all salts, and Cd (0.02-0.04ppm) was not affected by storage period. Pb was not detected in 5-year-old salts. Older salts showed brighter color than younger ones.
