  • Operating characteristics of a loop heat pipe (LHP) having a bypass line was investigated experimentally. The LHP had a sintered metal wick as a capillary structure and methanol as a working fluid. The sintered metal wick was made of stainless steel of which the average pore size was 5 ${\mu}m$and porosity of 47%. A bypass line of a small diameter was attached between the vapor escape passage and the liquid reservoir. The dimension of the flat evaporator was $50(L){\times}40(W){\times}30(H)$ mm and that of the condenser was $50(L){\times}40(W){\times}11(H)$ mm. Wall and pipe material of the LHP was stainless steel and heating area was 35(W) mm${\times}$35(L) mm. The inner diameters of vapor and liquid transport lines were 4.0 mm and 2.0 mm, and the lengths of the two lines were both 0.5 m. The LHP was tested for three different tilt angles of horizontal, favorite tilt, and adverse tilt. The thermal load range was up to 290 W at the condenser above evaporation position. Furthermore, the effect of a bypass line on the start-up transient as well as steady-state operation was presented and discussed.

  • Corrosion of pipes Is one of the most serious problems in the maintenance of water worlds. Corrosion is promoted not only by physical factors such as temperature, but also by electrochemical factors including concentration of soluble metal ions, chlorine ion, pH, DO and microorganisms. Corrosion products also affect corrosion rate. In this research, study results are summarized as follows ; 1) Corrosion test was performed for 4 weeks at $70^{\circ}C$, pH 7.0 with specimens of 4 types of metal materials used as service pipes. Corrosion rate and S.E.M were analyzed. The results were showed that corrosion 1.ate of carbon steel pipe was 4.10~5.22 $mg/\textrm{cm}^2$ . week, galvanized steel pipe 0.98~1.34$mg/\textrm{cm}^2$. week, Copper pipe 0.02~0.04$mg/\textrm{cm}^2$. week, stainless steel pipe 0.05~ 0.10$mg/\textrm{cm}^2$ . week. 2) When corrosion rate was tested for tile types of pipes at pH 7 and both $25^{\circ}C$ and $75^{\circ}C$, avaerage corrosion rate for 6 weeks at $25^{\circ}C$ Ivas 2.26$mg/\textrm{cm}^2$ . week in carbon steel pipe, 1.99$mg/\textrm{cm}^2$. week in galvanized steel pipe, 0.26 $mg/\textrm{cm}^2$. week in stainless steel pipe. • High-strength plastic water supply pipe evaluation method was evaluated in this study. Up to date, high strength water supply pipes that we install are mostly ductile cast iron pipes. Sometimes, a few PVC pipes are installed. Metal pipes have rust problem on the surface, causing serious damage to metal pipes and reducing the expected life span of water piping system. Nowadays, depending on technology development, some companies have improved properties of general PVC pipe performance with remarkable properties that exceed KS and ASTM standard. Here, we suggest a new method of performance evaluation for high-strength water plastic pipes.

  • The most the electronic industry has recently accelerated the modularization, the miniaturization and the high integrated trend of electronics fields such as electronics components, appliances and etc., the most increasingly the heat generation problem rises. Even though the conventional cooling technologies are widely used in order to reduce the heat loads, the technologies are not easy to meet the present trends due to the fact that most of many conventional methods are relative to external form environments such as size, design and so on. With regardless of those environments, however, a heat pipe is one of the most efficient systems to improve the heat transfer performance. And then the performance of the heat pipe depends on a wick structure. Of various wick structures, sintered metal wick is known so that it has some advantages such as smaller pore size, increasing porosity as well as high reliability. In this study sintered metal wicks, thickness 0.7 mm, 0.8 mm and 0.9 mm, were manufactured as of $100{\mu}m$ copper powder to obtain the manufacturing technology of heat pipes mounted with a sintered metal wick. Furthermore, experiments for the operational performance factors such as capillary limit, thermal resistance were not only performed but also compared with a theoretical model simultaneously. Experimental results agreed with the theoretical model, and then it seems to be required to study various development processes of sintered metal wicks for the high performance of a heat pipe system.

  • The Loop Heat Pipe(LHP) system uses capillary forces so as to pump the working fluid from heat acquisition to heat rejecting systems. The performance of the LHP systems depends mainly upon the operating performance of the wick structure. The capillary pressure increases with decreasing the pore size of the wick structure. By the way, the wick structure's permeability decreases with decreasing the pore size and the porosity. To obtain an ideal wick, the wick structure should possess several characteristics such as the small pore size, high porosity and chemical compatibility with working fluid. Sintered metal wicks have been mainly used as the capillary wick structure mounted in LHP because of the fact that the sintered metal wick has some advantages like convenient selection of wick material, smaller pore size and so on as well as high reliability. In this study, sintered metal wicks were developed to meet required several parameters to design the high performance LHP systems for obtaining even more effective cooling technologies.

  • In this study, a pressure vessel for a heat pipe was fabricated by bonding a metal thin film using a polymer compound sheet. In order to confirm the applicability of the experimentally manufactured copper material thin heat pipe of 0.6 mm or less, the pressure resistance and effective thermal conductivity for pressure generated according to the type of the working fluid of the heat pipe were evaluated to suggest the commercialization potential of the thin heat pipe. As a result of evaluating the pressure resistance and effective thermal conductivity performance of the thin heat pipe, the following conclusions were drawn. 1) Using a PEEK-based polymer compound sheet, it was possible to fabricate a pressure vessel for a thin heat pipe with a pressure resistance of up to 1.0 MPa by bonding a copper thin film, and the possibility of commercialization was confirmed at a temperature below 120 ℃. 2) In the case of the effective thermal conductivity performance evaluation test, the effective thermal conductivity of ethanol was higher than that of FC72 and Novec7000, and in the case of ethanol, the maximum effective thermal conductivity was 2,851 W/mK at 3.0 W of heating.

  • Nozzle in nuclear power plant is connected to pipe using safe end. Dissimilar metal weld between nozzle and safe end is followed by similar metal weld between safe end and pipe. And thus residual stress in dissimilar metal weld can be affected by similar metal weld. Similar metal weld impose bending stress on dissimilar metal weld, which is according to the length of safe end. In this study, simple nozzle model which covers various radius to thickness ratios was proposed to quantify residual stress in dissimilar metal weld based on finite element analyses. As a result, short length of safe end was proved to be more effective to mitigate residual stress in dissimilar metal weld and critical effective length of safe end is provided according to the radius to thickness ratio.

  • In this paper, the vibration characteristics of IHTS(Intermediate Heat Transfer System) piping system of LMR(Liquid Metal Reactor) conveying hot liquid sodium are investigated to eliminate the pipe supports for economic reasons. To do this, a 3-dimensional straight pipe element and a curved pipe element conveying fluid are formulated using the dynamic stiffness method of the wave approach and coded to be applied to any complex piping system. Using this method, the dynamic characteristics including the natural frequency, the frequency response functions, and the dynamic instability due to the pipe internal flow velocity are analyzed. As one of the design parameters, the vibration energy flow is also analyzed to investigate the disturbance transmission paths for the resonant excitation and the non-resonant excitations.
