BACKGROUND: Metal contamination of farmlands nearby abandoned mines is a serious environmental problem. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of stabilizers on different type of the soils contaminated with metals. METHODS AND RESULTS: The texture of silt loam soil initially contaminated with heavy metal was artificially adjusted to loam and sandy loam by adding sand, and the soil organic matter content (1.5%) was also altered by adding peat to the soils at 3.5 and 8.0%. The soils were mixed with 3% (w/w) of each limestone, dolomite, and steel slag. For the soils with different textures, the bioavailability of As was found to be the lowest in sandy loam compared to others metals such as Cu, Pb, and Zn. The efficacy of limestone and dolomite was not significantly different compared to the soils having different organic matter contents, but the stabilization efficiency of steel slag increased as the soil organic matter content increased. Moreover, stabilizers showed inhibition effect on the uptake of metals to plant. CONCLUSION: The stabilizers were found as effective materials to immobilize metals in soil and to decrease plant uptake of metals. Studies are needed to deeply elucidate the interaction between influencing factors and various stabilizers.
While furniture making in general has been traditionally regarded as labor-intensive industry, the making of metal furniture has immense potential in terms of its growth and as a value added industry. Granted that the technology and designing of metal furniture in Korea are still behind the standards enjoyed by the developed nations of the world, still its future here is promising when we consider the comparatively short history of its industry, Korea depends on imports from abroad for almost all the natural resources she needs for industry. Metal (especially iron) industry is, however, one field where she has some advantage over other nations. Korea is a major producer of iron and her technology in this field is competitive in the international market. When viewed from the points of environment and ecology metal furniture has good points, as metals are recyclable when they are discarded and collected properly according to their reusability. This adds to the merits its industry has here as this country, with her limited natural resources, has yet to solve the pressing problem of disposing ever-increasing waste matter from homes and factories.
Theoretical models of reionization require that approximately 10% of the Lyman Continumm (LyC) photons escape from their host dark matter haloes and re-ionize neutral hydrogen in the Universe. However, observations of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z~3 report much lower escape fractions of $f_{esc}{\sim}1%$. In an attempt to understand the discrepancy, we perform radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of isolated disk galaxies using RAMSES-RT with high resolution (maximum ~ 9 pc). We find that $f_{esc}$ is ~6% on average for the reference run ($Z=0.1Z{\odot}$), whereas the fraction decreases to ~1% in the case of metal-rich disk ($Z=1Z{\odot}$). This happens because dense metal-poor gas clumps are disrupted early due to strong Lya pressure and supernova explosions, while star particles are trapped for a longer period of time in the metal-rich environments. We also find that $f_{esc}$ is still significant (~4%) even when the amount of metal-poor gas is increased by a factor of 5. Our preliminary results suggest that the low escape fractions in LBGs may be better explained by (locally) metal-enriched gas near young stars than high gas fractions in galaxies.
In this work, the 1L grade integrated metal DOC/DPF filter that can install in engine manifold position was developed to investigate the effect of platinum-coating amount of filter on the improvement of filter activation temperature and reduction of particulate matter (PM). This filter was installed in 2.9L CI engine which meets the EURO-4 emission regulation. Tests for PM reduction efficiency of filter were conducted under ND-13 mode with full-load test condition. It was revealed that the time to reach the activation temperature of metal filter ($280^{\circ}C$) was shorter as the amount of platinum-coating increased. This short activation time can be helpful for the reduction of CO and HC emissions during cold start condition. At the same time, PM reduced as the coating amount increased. The reduction percentage of $DOC_{40}$, $DOC_{20}$, and $DOC_0$ were 96.7% (2.34 mg/kW'h), 95.1% (3.47 mg/kW'h), and 94.5% (3.69 mg/kW'h) compared to previous result (71.4 mg/kW'h), respectively.
Because some particulate matter emission sources may inherently produce soluble species, or some soluble species may be produced during atmospheric transport, it is important to understand the origin of a particles's solubility when water-soluble tracers are used in source apportionment studies. Laboratory experiments were performed on three types of soils (Mongolia grassland, Mongolia desert, and Korean rural soils), to study the impact of acidification by nitric acid vapor on the solubility of metals in the soils. To achieve this goal, concentrations of water-soluble metals (Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Mn, and Fe) in the soils measured before and after acidification. Contributions of concentrations of water-soluble metal species before and after acidification attack to their total concentrations varied little with soil type. Concentrations of water-soluble Mg, Al, K, Ca, Mn, and Fe from the soils after interaction with nitric acid vapor increased, with significant increases in soluble Ca and Mn for all soil types suggesting soil acidification enhances the amount of leachable metal species in soil dust. There was little increase in water-soluble Na and K after acidification for each soil type. This experiment demonstrates that quantities of water-soluble metal species in particulate matter are produced under high gaseous nitric acid conditions.
Repeated additions of untreated slurry to soil affected ecology and caused high levels of heavy metal in soil and ground water. The objective of this study was to evaluate heavy metal from hanwoo slurry with ferrous sulfate ($FeSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$), aluminum sulfate [$Al_2(SO_4)_3{\cdot}14H_2O$, alum] and aluminum chloride ($AlCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O$) as a way to improve environmental management in hanwoo industry. The treatment rates, which were incorporated totally within the hanwoo slurry, were 1.0 g and 1.5 g of ferrous sulfate, alum and aluminum chloride/25 g of hanwoo slurry. The various rates of chemical additives significantly increased dry matter (9.98~13.94%) and decreased pH (3.48~6.52) compared with the controls. The use of chemical additives decreased Fe (11~29%), Al (7~12%), Zn (13~36%), and Cu (4~32%) contents, except for Fe in hanwoo slurry with ferrous sulfate and Al in hanwoo slurry with alum and aluminum chloride. In addition, the reduction in heavy metal should be associated with reduction in pH. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that alum and aluminum chloride additives at rate of 1.5 g were cost-effective management practice that significantly reduces heavy metal from hanwoo slurry, while it may be improved environmental management.
After-treatment system for gasoline direct injection engines should be considered due to the regulation standard for particle number emitted from spark ignition engine vehicles. A metal foam particulate filter, which is thought to be more proper for gasoline engines for its unique filtration and heat resistance characteristics, has been evaluated via engine dynamometer tests.
To evaluate the organic matter and trace metal pollution in intertidal sediment of the coastal zone, various geochemical parameters (grain size, ignition loss [IL], chemical oxygen demand [COD], acid volatile sulfide [AVS], and metals [Al, Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Mn, Hg, and As]) were measured for the intertidal surface sediment of the mainland and islands between Mokpo and Haenam in the southwestern coast of Korea. The surface sediments consist mainly of finer sediments, such as mud and silt. The concentrations of IL, COD, and trace metals in intertidal sediment were relatively high in the shoreline of the mainland than in that of islands and those in some stations exceeded the sediment quality guidelines (SQGs). Moreover, the concentrations of IL, COD, and trace metals (except As) in sediment showed relatively good positive correlations with mean grain size, indicating that the concentrations of organic matter and trace metals in intertidal sediment of the study region are dependent on grain size of sediment. Pollution evaluation for trace metals using geochemical assessment techniques, such as enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index, and SQGs, suggested that the intertidal sediments in the study region show light pollution with Cr and moderate pollution with As. More extensive interdisciplinary studies are required to determine the potential causes of As pollution in intertidal sediment.
We investigate the influence of the New Electron Injection Layers (EIL) on the performance of the Alkali Metal Complex vapor-deposited Organic Light Emitting Diodes(OLED). Two different Alkali Metal Complex were used; Lithium Quinolate (Liq), and Sodium Quinolate (Naq). In all cases, $Alq_3$ was the Electron Transporting Layer (ETL). We measure and compare the current density-voltage (J-V) and luminance-voltage (L-V) characteristics. We concluded that the turn-on voltage, and luminance efficiency are controlled by the type of EIL material used. We show the longer life-time OLED with Alkali Metal Complex EIL than OLED with LiF EIL. And we show the Optimized Alkali Metal Complex thickness is 3nm. Existent LiF to because is inorganic material, there is trouble to do epitaxy into thin layers but regulates the thickness in case of Alkali Metal Complex matter characteristic that is easy be. Alkali Metal Complex also appeared by sensitive thing in thickness than LiF If utilize this material, It is thought much advantages may be at common use of OLED.
A study was carried out in order to investigate the removal efficiencies and removal characteristics of heaw metals such as Pb, Cd, Cr, Cu in raw water by one of conventional water treatment processes. The coagulants used in this study were Alum and PAC. Three kinds of water samples were provided: kaolin water, kaolin water mixed with humic acid and raw water from Han River mixed with suspended matter deposited on raw water inlet pipe. Heaw metals were added to the water samples with their respective turbidity, and jar tests were performed. In the results from heaw metal removal studies, lead might be adsorbed or exchanged on the particle surface (SS) rather than react with organic matter added. Cadmium was affected on the dissolved organic matter. Chromium was affected by the both dissolved organic matter and SS concentration, and the restabilization and the enmeshment appeared at moderate (50~80 NTU) and high (100 NTU) turbidity as defined in this experimenL The removal efficiency of copper was relatively little affected by the dissolved organic matter but by SS concentration in comparison with other heavy metals. In these studies as to the raw water turbidities and concentration of heaw metals, it is proved out that the removal efficiency on heaw metals in both cases of PAC and Alum as coagulants was not significantly different.
