TiC 입자강화 Mg 복합재료에 있어서 입자 분산거동 및 기계적 성질에 미치는 합금원소의 영향 (Effect of Alloying Elements on Particulate Dispersion Behavior and Mechanical Properties in TiC Particulate Reinforced Magnesium Matrix Composites)

  • TiC particulate reinforced magnesium matrix composites were fabricated by melt stirring method. The effect of alloying elements on TiC particulate dispersion into molten magnesium and mechanical properties were investigated. The incorporation time is defined as the time required for dispersion of solid particles into molten metal. The incorporation time of TiC particles into molten pure magnesium was remarkably shorter and the particulated dispersion was more uniform than that of pure aluminum which was reported previously. The incorporation time was, prolonged by the addition of Al, Bi, Ca, Ce, Pb, Sn or Zn. The tensile strength increased and elongation decreased by the addition of Cu or Sn into the matrices and composites. Although, the tensile strength of the matrices and composites increased by alloying with Ca or Ce, the maximum elongation was observed at a content of about 1% for the matrices. By alloying with Zn, the tensile strength increased for the matrices and composites, but the elongation of the matrices increased. The pure magnesium and its alloy matrix composites reinforced with 20vol% TiC have the tensile strength of about 400MPa. This value is compared with the tensile strength of SiC whisker reinforced magnesium matrix composites fabricated by liquid infiltration method at the same volume fraction. There fore, the melt strirring method which has the advantages of simple process is considered to be efficient in fabricating magnesium matrix composites.

온도 상승에 따른 혼합금속복합재료의 건식 마찰특성 평가 (Evaluation of Dry Tribological Characteristics of Hybrid Metal Matrix Composites with Temperature Rising)

  • 가압주조법으로 제조된 알루미나 섬유와 SiC 입자 혼합금속복합재료의 마찰특성을 조사하였다. 핀 형태의 마모 시험편은 전체 부피비 20%에 섬유와 입자의 서로 다른 비를 갖고 있다. 혼합금속복합재료의 윤활마모시험은 핀과 디스크 타입의 마모시험기를 사용하여 수행되었는데, 상온과 고온 $100^{\circ}C$$150^{\circ}C$.에서의 건식마찰특성을 각각 수행하였다. 마모면의 미시분석은 주사전자현미경(SEM)으로 조사하여 마찰특성과 마모거동을 분석하였다. 시험 결과 마모저항은 상온에서는 섬유와 같은 방향인 (PR) 방향에서는 SiC입자의 증가에 따라 향상되었다. 고온에서는 섬유와 수직한 방향(N)의 마모특성은 PR방향의 섬유가 마모면으로 전체적으로 쉽게 뽑히기 때문에 PR방향의 금속보합재료의 마모특성보다 우수하였다. 한편 마찰계수는 온도증가에 따라 감소하였다.

Growth of Al2O3/Al Composite by Directed Metal Oxidation of Al Surface Doped with Sodium Source

  • Both an unreinforced $Al_2O_3$/Al matrix and a ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ particulate reinforced composite have been produced by the oxidation of an Al surface doped with NaOH in the absence of any other dopant. Fabrication of the matrix was initiated by the formation of $NaAlO_2$, which provides a favorable surface structure for the matrix formation by breaking the protective $Al_2O_3$ layer on Al. During the matrix growth, the external surface of the growth front was covered with a very thin sodium-rich oxide. A cyclic formation process of the sodium-rich oxide on the growth surface was proposed for the sodium-induced directed metal oxidation process. This process involves dissolution of the sodium-rich oxide, motion of Na to the growth front, and re-formation of the oxide on the surface. Near-net-shape composites were fabricated by infiltrating an $Al_2O_3$/Al matrix into a ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ particulate preform, without growth barrier materials. The infiltration distance increased almost linearly in the NaOH-doped preform.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-copper (Cu) composites are successfully fabricated by a combination of a binder-free wet mixing and spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. The SPS is performed under various conditions to investigate optimized processing conditions for minimizing the structural defects of CNTs and densifying the MWCNT-Cu composites. The electrical conductivities of MWCNT-Cu composites are slightly increased for compositions containing up to 1 vol.% CNT and remain above the value for sintered Cu up to 2 vol.% CNT. Uniformly dispersed CNTs in the Cu matrix with clean interfaces between the treated MWCNT and Cu leading to effective electrical transfer from the treated MWCNT to the Cu is believed to be the origin of the improved electrical conductivity of the treated MWCNT-Cu composites. The results indicate the possibility of exploiting CNTs as a contributing reinforcement phase for improving the electrical conductivity and mechanical properties in the Cu matrix composites.

Preparation of Silicon Nitride-silicon Carbide Composites from Abrasive SiC Powders

  • Silicon nitride - silicon carbide composite was developed by using an abrasive SiC powders as a raw material. The composites were prepared by mixing abrasive SiC powder with silicon, pressing and sintering at $1400^{\circ}C$ under nitrogen atmosphere in atmosphere controlled vacuum furnace. The proportion of silicon in the initial mixtures varied from 20 to 50 wt%. After sintering, crystalline phases and microstructure were characterized. All composites consisted of ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ and ${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ as the bonding phases in SiC matrix. Their physical and mechanical properties were also determined. It was found that the density of the obtained composites increased with an increase in the $Si_3N_4$ content formed in the reaction.

  • 분말야금법 및 고온진공가압기술, 열간등가압성형기술을 이용하여 알루미늄 금속기 복합재료를 제작하였으며 이들과 관련한 미시역학 기반 강화공정 모델을 개발하였다. 고온, 가압 성형공정은 기지재료의 비탄성거동과 성형체 내부의 기공 제거를 통한 충진을 수반하게 되며 이러한 공정은 압력, 온도 및 강화재의 체적분률 등과 같은 공정변수의 영향을 받게 된다. 따라서 개발된 강화공정 모델을 유한요소해석 프로그램에 적용함으로써 고온진공가압과 열간등가압 동안 기공의 상대밀도 변화에 따른 충진거동을 예측하였고 다양한 공정조건 하에서 실험결과와 잘 일치함을 확인하였다. 완성된 알루미늄 금속기 복합재료의 건전성 평가와 관련하여 인장시험을 수행하였으며 초기 잔존하는 기공의 영향에 따른 제반 기계적 특성을 고찰할 수 있었다.

몬테카르로 시뮬레이션에 의한 $SIC_w$/Al 복합재료의 피로수명에측 (Fatigue Life Prediction of $SIC_w$/Al Composites by Using the Monte-Carlo Simulation)

  • It requires uch time and cost to obtain the fatigue crack growth life and fatigue crack growth path morphlogy from the fatigue crack growth tests. In this study, the Monte-Carlo simulation program was developed to predict the fatigue crack growth lofe and fatigue crack growth path morphology of metal matrix composites. Fatigue crack growth lives of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% $SiC_w$/Al composites were predicted by usign the Monte-Carlo Simulation. And the fatigue crack growth lives of 25% $SiC_w$/Al and Almatrix from Monte-carlo simulation were compared with fatigue life from experiments in order to verify the accuracy of Monte-Carlo Simulation program.

  • Microstructure, hardness and wear characteristics of $SiC_p/Al-6.5wt%Si-1.7wt%Mg$ alloy composites fabricated by the method of rheo-compocasting and hot pressing are investigated in this study. The dispersion of SiC particles in the composites is homogeneous and the hardness improves as additional amount increases. The wear amount of the matrix metal increases highly as wear rates increase, for the wear mechanism changes from adhesive wear to melt wear, and the matrix metal was coated on the surface of revolving disc and its weight increases. In the 5vol% composites, Fe is adhered on the surface of specimen by the projection of the dispersed hard SiC particles which have net-work structure and the coating layer is about $300{\mu}m$. But in the composite more than 20vol%, the wear amount of composite decreases because the SiC particles which have superior hardness, wear resistance and heat resistance properties resist wear, the abrasive wear turn out predominant wear mechanism and so the wear amount of revolving disc increases.

  • The tribological properties of the aluminum short fiber and glass fiber reinforced tin-bronze matrix composites manufactured by vacuum hot pressing was studied. The effect of the composition and the relative density on the wear properties was examined by a reciprocal type tribo-test machine. The results were discussed by the observation of the microstructure of sintered specimen and worn surface observation using SEM and EDS. Addition of the fibers led to the wear resistance since the metal matrix was reinforced by the fibers. The reinforcement of the fiber seemed to be stronger as the distribution of the fibers was more uniform. Graphite also reduce the wear loss. The pores in the sintered composites seemed to play an important role to improve the wear resistance since the pores provide the places where the solid lubricants locate.
