  • The sediment in the highly contaminated Gamjeon brook was collected, mixed with the raw material of the tile, and then the commercial tile was produced using the mixture. The concentrations of the heavy metals in the mixture-before and after the tile was produced-were analyzed and the effects of the acid solution on the produced tile were examined. The production of the tiles was successful and the result of heavy metal analysis showed that the concentration of Fe was the highest and that of Cd was the lowest The amount of heavy metal in the sediment - the raw material of the tile mixture was more than that of the produced tile. The elution concentration of the heavy metal by the acid solution(pH : 4 - 7) was low and the quality of the produced tile was better than the commercial tile. The result of this study suggested that the contaminated sediment was removed to produce good tiles, therefore the water pollution and soil pollution were reduced.

  • The control of nonpoint source pollution is essentially needed to successfully perform the Total Maximum Daily Load program. Of the various land uses in the nonpoint source, the paved areas such as a parking lot and a bridge are stormwater intensive land uses because of high imperviousness and high pollutant mass emissions. This research was performed to understand the magnitude and nature of the stormwater emissions with the purposes of quantifying stormwater pollutant concentrations and mass emission rates from a parking lot and a bridge. Two monitoring sites in Kongju city were equipped with an automatic rainfall gages and an automatic flow meter for accumulating the data such as rainfall, water quality and runoff flow rates. This paper will summarize the metal concentration changes during the storm duration and metal EMCs to characterize the concentration profiles in a parking lot and a bridge. Also a new concept, dynamic EMC, will be proposed to find the relationship between EMC and first flush effect. It can be used to determine the economical treatment criteria in best management practices.

  • Enormous volumes of mining wastes from the abandoned and closed mines are disposed without a proper treatment at Southeastern part of Kangwon Province. Erosion of these wastes contaminates soil, surface water, and sediments with heavy metals. Objectives of this research were to fractionate heavy metals in the mine waste and to assess the potential S. P. A. G.(Soil Pollution Assesment Guidance) of each metal fraction. Mine wastes analyzed for physical and chemical properties. pH of wastes ranged from 3.3 to 8.0. Contents of total N and loss on ignition matter were in the ranges of 0.2~5.6%, and 0.8~15.3%, respectively. Heavy metals in the wastes were higher in the coal mines than those in the other mine wastes. Total concentrations of metals in the wastes were in the orders of Pb > Zn > Cu > Cd, exceeded the corrective action level of the Soil Environment Conservation Law and higher than the natural abundance levels reported from uncontaminated soils. Relative distribution of heavy metal fractions was residual > organic > reducible > carbonate > adsorbed, reversing the degree of metal bioavailability. Mobile fractions of metals were relatively small compared to the total concentrations. Soil Pollution Assesment Guidance(SPAG) values were ranged from 0.08 to 9.14 based on labile fraction of metal concentrations. SPAG values of labile concentration were lower than those of total concentration.

  • The change of microstructure in the bonded interlayer and mechanical properties of the joints were investigated during Transient Liquid Phase Diffusion Bonding(TLP bonding) of STS304/SM17C and STS304/SM45C couples using Ni base amorphous alloys added boron and prepared alloy as insert metal. Main experimental results obtained in this study are as follows: 1) Isothermal solidification process was completed much faster than theoretically expected time, 14ks at 1473K temperature. Its completion times were 3.6ks at 1423K, 2.5ks at 1473K and 1.6ks at 1523K respectively. 2) As the concentration of boron in the insert metal increased, the more borides were precipitated near bonded interlayer and grain boundary of STS304 side during isothermal solidification process, its products were $M_{23}P(C,B)_6}_3)$ The formation of grain boundary during isothermal solidification process was completed at structural carbon steel after starting the solidfication at STS304 stainless steel. 4) The highest value of hardness was obtained at bonded interface of STS304 side. The desirable tensile properties were obtained from STS304/SM17C, STS304/SM45C using MBF50 and experimentally prepared insert metal with low boron concentration.

  • This study investigated the extraction and stripping performance of PIMs consisting of PVC and Aliquat 336. Extraction and stripping of three representative heavy metals - namely $Cd^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, and $Zn^{2+}$ - by the synthesized membranes were evaluated as a function of sodium chloride concentration and under different stripping solutions (0.01 M $HNO_3$, Milli-Q water, 0.01 M HCl and 0.01 M NaOH), respectively. Results reported here indicate that the formation of negatively charged metal chloride complex species was responsible for the extraction of the target metal to PIMs. Experimental results and thermodynamic modeling of the speciation of chloro metal complexes further confirm that the extraction selectivity between $Cd^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ can be controlled by regulating the chloride concentration of the feed solution. An acidic solution without any chloride was the most effective stripping solution, followed by Milli-Q water, and a diluted hydrochloric acid solution. On the other hand, the stripping of metals from PIMs did not occur when a basic stripping solution was used.

  • In analyzing heavy metals in soil samples, the standard protocol established by Korean Minstry of Environment (KSTM) requires two different pretreatments (A and B) based on soil particle size. Soil particles < 0.15 mm in diameter after sieving are directly processed into acid extraction (method A). However, if the quantity of soil particles < 0.15 mm are not enough, grinding of the particles within 0.15 mm ~ 2 mm is required (method B). Grinding is often needed for some field samples, especially for the soil samples retrieved from soil washing process that contain relatively large-sized soil grains. In this study, two soil samples with different particle size distribution were prepared and analyzed for heavy metals concentrations using two different pretreatment to investigate the effect of grinding. The results showed that heavy metal concentrations tend to increase with the increase of the fraction of small-sized particles. In comparison of the two pretreatments, pretreatment A yielded higher heavy metal concentration than pretreatment B, indicating significant influence of grinding on analytical results. This results suggest that the analytical values of heavy metals in soil samples obtained by KSTM should be taken with caution and carefully reviewed.

  • In this work, the optimized process condition of chemical solution deposition which is used to planarize the surface of the metal tape (which is used to grow IBAD-MgO texture template) was investigated. $Y_2O_3$ films were dip-coated on the surface of the unpolished metal tape as the seed and barrier layer. The effects of $Y_2O_3$ concentration of the solution (0.5wt.%, 1.3wt.%, 2.8wt.%, 5.6wt.%) and the number of coatings on the surface morphology and barrier capability against the diffusion from the metal tape were examined. The surface morphology and the thickness of the film were observed using the scanning electron microscope and the atomic force microscope. The presence of elements in metal tape on the film surface was analyzed using the auger electron spectroscopy. The $Y_2O_3$ film thickness increases with increasing the $Y_2O_3$ concentration in the solution, and the surface became smoother with increasing the number of coating cycles. The best result was obtained from the $Y_2O_3$ film coated 4 cycles using 2.8wt.% solution.

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are considered hazardous air pollutants and these are emitted from building materials and household products. VOCs can cause global warming as well as human sickness, and even cancer. Photocatalysis provides a way of converting VOCs into harmless materials. Various researches have shown that $TiO_2$ is the most efficient photocatalysts due to its excellent activity. In this study, metal/non-metal doped $TiO_2$ particles are synthesized for the enhancement of the photocatalytic properties of pure $TiO_2$. By metal/non-metal doping, band gap energies of prepared samples were analyzed by UV/Visible spectrophotometer. The physical and chemical properties of synthesized powder were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope, by BET for measuring their specific surface area, and by XRD for phase identification and particle size determination. Degradation ability for p-xylene was evaluated through monitoring the concentration in a closed chamber. Relation between their properties and decomposition abilities for VOC were evaluated based on the experimental results.

  • Dust samples were collected from 17 middle and high schools in the Jeonju-city. heavy metal concentrations were determined for the dry-deposited dusts from indoor and outdoor of classroom and playground of each sampling site. Concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in indoor\`s dusts were highly concentrated. Also heavy metal concentrations in outdoor\`s dusts were similar to that of indoor\`s dusts. Concentrations of Cd, Cu, and Zn in the dusts were much higher than the world average contents in soil and environmental orientation value. These levels are similar to those of the dust samples at middle schools located at Kangseo-gu and Yangchon-gu , Seoul. Playground dusts in 6 schools exhibited the enhanced heavy metal pollution with a pollution index (by Kloke) greater than 1.0. Most indoor and outdoor dusts exhibited the enhanced heavy metal pollution with a pollution index(by Cullbard et al.) greater than 1.0.
