A kinetic study is reported for $S_NAr$ reaction of 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (5a) and 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene (5b) with alkali-metal ethoxides (EtOM, M = Li, Na, K and 18-crown-6-ether complexed K) in anhydrous ethanol. The second-order rate constant increases in the order $k_{EtOLi}$ < $k_{EtO^-}$ < $k_{EtONa}$ < $k_{EtOK}$ < $k_{EtOK/18C6}$ for the reaction of 5a and $k_{EtOLi}$ < $k_{EtONa}$ < $k_{EtO^-$ < $k_{EtOK}$ < $k_{EtOK/18C6}$ for that of 5b. This indicates that $M^+$ ion behaves as a catalyst or an inhibitor depending on the size of $M^+$ ion and the nature of the leaving group ($F^-$ vs. $Cl^-$). Substrate 5a is more reactive than 5b, although the $F^-$ in 5a is ca. $10pK_a$ units more basic than the $Cl^-$ in 5b, indicating that the reaction proceeds through a Meisenheimer complex in which expulsion of the leaving group occurs after the rate-determining step (RDS). $M^+$ ion would catalyze the reaction by increasing either the nucleofugality of the leaving group through a four-membered cyclic transition state or the electrophilicity of the reaction center through a ${\pi}$-complex. However, the enhanced nucleofugality would be ineffective for the current reaction, since expulsion of the leaving group occurs after the RDS. Thus, it has been concluded that $M^+$ ion catalyzes the reaction by increasing the electrophilicity of the reaction center through a ${\pi}$-complex between $M^+$ ion and the ${\pi}$-electrons in the benzene ring.

A precision analysis was conducted for the quantification of trace metal levels in airborne particulates using ICP-MS. According to our study the quantitative analysis using Whatman grade 41 filters produces more precise and representative values of metal concentrations than that using EPM 2000 filters. The mean concentration of PM 10 analyzed during 1998 ~ 2000 was 82 $\mu$g/m$^3$. The concentrations of human carcinogens such as As and Cr were 8.65 and 25.87 ng/m$^3$, respectively, while those of probable human carcinogens such as Cd and Pb were 3.13 and 219.46 ng/m$^3$, respectively. Time-weighted mean concentration, calculated using surface wind speed and direction, indicated that there were differences between metals of crustal origin and metals of anthropogenic origin. The rectorial concentrations of anthropogenic metals and PM 10 were higher for north -west sector with calm or low wind speed conditions than for any other sector with high wind speed conditions. On the contrary, the rectorial concentrations of crustal metals were high with high wind speed. In addition, the sectorial concentrations of crustal metals were more affected by south-west wind directions, which were compared with those of anthropogenic metals. The enrichment factor (EF) values of many anthropogenic metals were higher than 50, while those of crustal metals were lower than 3, respectively. The concentrations of Cr and Ni in Daejeon industrial complex area were 11 times higher than those in the background site of Kuopio in Finland, while that of Pb in the complex area was 22 times higher, respectively.

$[Ru(bpy)_2(dppz)]^2+$ (bpy=2,2'-bipyfidine, dppz=dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine) (RuBD), a long-lifetime metal-ligand complex, displays favorable photophysical properties. These include long lifetime, polarized emission, but no significant fluorescence from the complex that is not bound to DNA. To show the usefulness of this luminophore (RuBD) for probing the bending and torsional dynamics of nucleic acids, its intensity and anisotropy decays when intercalated into supercoiled and relaxed pTZ18U plasmids were examined using frequency-domain fluorometry with a blue light-emitting diode (LED) as the modulated light source. The mean lifetimes for the supercoiled plasmids (< $\tau$ >=148 ns) were somewhat shorter than those for the relaxed plasmids (< $\tau$ >=160 ns). This suggests that the relaxed plasmids were shielded more efficiently from water. The anisotropy decay data also showed somewhat shorter slow rotational correlation times for supercoiled plasmids (288 ns) than for the relaxed plasmids (355 ns). The presence of two rotational correlation times suggests that RuBD reveals both the bending and torsional motions of the plasmids. These results indicate that RuBD can be useful for studying both the bending and torsional dynamics of mucleic acids.
The dependence of polarographic parameters on the pressure for the reduction of copper(II), cadmium(II), and zinc(II) complex ions with ethylenediamine, propylenediamine, and diethylenetriamine has been studied. In this study the dropping mercury electrode, the mercury pool electrode, and helix type of platinum wire were used as the working, the reference, and the auxilary electrode, respectively. With increasing the pressure from 1 atmosphere to 1,500 atmospheres, the reduction half-wave potentials of metal complex ions are shifted to the negative values and the diffusion currents become considerably larger, in keeping with the theory on the change of the physical properties of the electrolytic solution such as the density, the viscosity, the dielectric constant, and the electrical conductance, etc. The slope values of the logarithmic plot are increased with increasing the pressure, which indicates the more irreversible reduction. The temperature coefficients of diffusion current observed over the range of the temperature from 25$^{\circ}$C to 35$^{\circ}$C are about two percentage with increasing the pressure, therefore the polarographic reduction under the high pressure is controlled by diffusion. The linear relationships between diffusion current and concentration of metal complex ions are established over all pressure range.
The metal-ligand complex, $[Ru(phen)_2(dppz)]^{2+}$ (phen=1,10-phenanthroline, dppz=dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine) (RuPD), was used as a spectroscopic probe for studying nucleic acid dynamics. The RuPD complex displays a long lifetime and a molecular light switch property upon DNA binding due to shielding of its dppz ligand from water. To show the usefulness of this luminophore (RuPD) for probing nucleic acid dynamics, we compared its intensity and anisotropy decays when intercalated into the $tRNA^{val}$ and pBluescript (pBS) II SK(+) phagemid through a comparison with ethidium bromide (EB), a conventional nucleic acid probe. We used frequency-domain fluorometry with a blue light-emitting diode (LED) as the modulated light source. The mean lifetime for the $tRNA^{val}$ (<${\tau}$> = 166.5 ns) was much shorter than that for the pBS II SK(+) phagemid (<${\tau}$> = 481.3 ns), suggesting a much more efficient shielding from water by the phagemid. Because of their size difference, the anisotropy decay data showed a much shorter rotational correlation times for the $tRNA^{val}$ (99.9 and 23.6 ns) than for the pBS II SK(+) phagemid (968.7 and 39.5 ns). These results indicate that RuPD can be useful for studying nucleic acid dynamics.

Mononuclear Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II), Zn(II), Fe(III), Ru(III), and UO2(II) complexes of 2-hydroxy-4-(p-tolyldiazenyl)benzylidene)-2-(p-tolylamino)acetohydrazide (H2L) were prepared by direct method. The ligand and its complexes were isolated in solid state and characterized by analytical techniques such as elemental and thermal analyses, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility measurements and spectroscopic techniques such as UV-Visible, IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR. The spectral data indicated that the ligand acted as neutral/monobasic bidentate or monobasic/dibasic tridentate ligand bonded to the metal ions through the oxygen atom of ketonic or enolic carbonyl group, azomethine nitrogen atom and deprotonated/protonated phenolic oxygen atom forming either tetragonally distorted octahedral or octahedral. Antimicrobial activities of the ligand and its complexes were evaluated against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Aspergillus niger by well diffusion method. The results of antifungal activity showed that the Fe(III) complex (10) exhibited higher antifungal against Aspergillus niger than the other complexes. However, the results of antibacterial activity revealed that Cu(II) complex (4) is the most active against Escherichia coli while the Cu(II) complex (5) and Fe(III) complex (10) exhibited higher antibacterial effect on Bacillus subtilis than the other complexes.
Functions of the luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) and its induced release by divalent metal ions have received great attention because this neurotransmitter subsequently regulates the secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH). Metal-LHRH complexes were synthesized by addition of various Cu(II),Ni(II),Zn(II) ions into LHRH in order to understand how the induced release of LHRH is possible. The degree of complexation was monitored by $^1H$, $^{13}C$-NMR chemical shifts, and final products were identified by Mass spectrometry. Solutionstate structure determination of Zn(II)-LHRH out of metal-complexes was accomplished by using NMR and NMR-based distance geometry (DG). Interproton distance information from nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy was utilized for structure determination. Structure obtained in this study has a cyclic conformation exhibiting a specific ${\alpha}$-helical turn with residue numbers His[2]-Leu[7] out of 10 amino acids. Comparison of chemical shifts and EPR studies of Ni(II),Cu(II)-LHRH complexes exhibit that these metal complexes have 4-coordination geometry.
