In order to densify LAS(Lithuim Aluminosilicate)system compounds, we used metal alkoxides as precursors. Also Mg was added by sol-gel method using metal alkoxides to the LAS system for improving the sinterability, thermal and mechanical properties. The result was that the synthesizing temperature was lowered about 10$0^{\circ}C$, the sintering temperature was lowered by over 10$0^{\circ}C$ and MOR of samples from metal alkoxides was two times larger than that of sample form oxide.

The progress in the field of electronic materials has been especially significant for applications involving a range of electrical properties. Its importance is increasing with the increasing demand for integrated circuits. The sol-gel technique has been used for many years, and the metal alkoxides have featured prominently as source materials. The method consist of making a homogeneous solution of the component metal alkoxides in a suitable solvent, usually the parent alcohol; and then causing the hydrolysis under controlled conditions to produce a gel containing the hydrated metal oxide. The gel is then dried, and fired to produce a ceramic or glassy material at a temperature much lower than that required by the conventional melting process. This project consists of important theoretical considerations, processing techniques and applications related to electrophoresis derived thin films. In the electrophoretic process a metal alkoxide solution is gelled through hydrolysis-polymerization and converted the gel thin layer to an oxide by heating at relatively low temperatures.
Cordierite powders were prepared from Si(OC2H5)4, Al(OC3H7i)3 and Mg(OC2H5)2 by the sol-gel method. Two different methods were applied for producing fine and homogeneous powders. One is that Si(OC2H5)4 with a lowr rate of hydrolysis was partially hydrolyzed and then Al(OC3H7i)3 and Mg(OC2H5)2 were mixed and reacted. The other is based on the simultaneous hydrolysis of these metal alkoxides using i-C4H9OH which retards the rate of hydrolysis of Al(OC3H7i)3 and Mg(OC2H5)2. It was confirmed that ifne and homogeneous powders were obtained from both methods. Also these powders were calcined at four different temperatures during two hours. X-ray diffraction patterns show only ${\mu}$-cordierite phase at 1000$^{\circ}C$, ${\mu}$-cordierite and ${\alpha}$-cordierite phases at 1100-1200$^{\circ}C$ and ${\alpha}$-cordierite phase at 1300$^{\circ}C$ respectively.
Al2TiO5 powder was prepared by the sol-gel processing from th metal alkoxides ; aluminium sec-butoxide (Al(OC4H9)3 and tetraethyl orthotitanate (Ti(OC2H5)4) The particles of Al2TiO5 produced from alkoxides were measured to be below $1.5mutextrm{m}$ and mre than 90% weere below 1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ however those from commercial alumina and titania were over 0.5-7${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and only 60% were below 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 90% were below 2.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ Therefore Al2TiO5 powder produced from alkoxides had the narrower distributionin size than that produced from the commercial alumina and titania powders. The addition of mullite or Al2O3 powder to the prepared aluminum titanate inhibited the grain growth and this resulted in decreased and increase in density.
Simple ways to build up mixed-metal molecules which can act as potential single-source precursors to multimetallic oxides are reviewed. Emphasis is given to Lewis acid-base reactions between metal alkoxides M(OR)/sub n/, and between metal alkoxides and more accessible oxide precursors, carboxylates M(O₂CR)/sub n/ and β-diketonates M(β-dik)/sub n/. Characterization of the precursors is achieved in the solid state (single crystal X-ray diffraction, FT-IR) and by multinuclear NMR in solution. The reactions proceed toward the formation of aggregates in which the different metals display their usual coordinations numbers, often six for transition metals, as shown. Strategies for fixing the stoichiometry between the metals are developed. The reactivity of the MM species (dissociation, effects of chemical modifiers, of other metallic species, hydrolytic or non-hydrolytic condensation, etc.) will be indicated. Transformations into oxides are illustrated on precursors for titanates or niobates.
Cordierite powders were prepared by controlled hydrolysis of metal alkoxides with catalysts in water medium without using organic solvents. Water was adjusted to a certain pH by HC1 and NH4OH. $\alpha$-Cordierite powder was prepared from aluminum isopropoxide, tetraethyl orthosilicate and magnesium ethoxide mixed with water adjusted to pH of 3. At water pH of 11, $\alpha$-cordierite, mullite and $\beta$-quartz phases were coexisted. The powders were freeze dried, calcined and then fired at different temperatures. The characteristics of powders were examined by means of DTA, X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, and electron microscopy. It was found that $\alpha$-cordierite could be synthesized at temperature of 120$0^{\circ}C$ from the powders prepared by alkoxides with water medium without organic solvents.
Sol-gel preparation technique using a chemical reaction of metal alkoxides has been widely used for the fabrication of various materials including ceramics. However, its mechanism has been studied till now because a number of chemical ways are possible from various alkoxides and additives. In this study, the mechanism of hydrolysis, condensation, and polymerization of alkoxides were investigated from the fabrication of lead-zirconate-titanate (PbZr$\_$x/Ti$\_$l-x/O$_3$; PZT) thin film that is used as various micro-actuator, transducer, and sensor because of its high electro-mechanical coupling factors and thermal stability. Furthermore, the fabrication process and characteristics of self-patternable PZT film using photosensitive stabilizer were studied in order to resolve the problem of physical damage and properties degradation during dry etching for device fabrication. Using an optimum condition to prepare the self-patternable PZT film, more than 5000 ${\AA}$ thick self-patternable PZT film could be fabricated by three times coating. The PZT film showed 28.4 ${\mu}$c/cm$^2$ of remnant polarization (Pr) and 37.0 kV/cm of coercive field (E$\_$c/).
Cordierite ceramics with low dielectric constants were obtained through sol-gel techniques using as metal alkoxides. The powders for the sintered cordierite ceramics were prepared by hydrolysis of metal alkoxides with ethanol and distilled water. In the hydrolysis, the mole ratio of HCI/TEOS was controlled by changing the amount of HCI as a catalyst. The sol-gel derived powders were dried, pressed, and fired at $1300^{\circ}C$. The dried powders were calcined at $800{\circ}C$ for 3hours to remove residual organics. The fired bodies with different dielectric constants were obtained by using HCI adjusted to various mole ratios of HCI/TEOS in the process. The variation of the amount of HCI catalyst led to a significant influence on dielectric contant, which was attributed to the formation of pores in the sintered body. Especially, the porosity of the sintered body influenced the dielectric constants.
Basic research on the formation of monolithic glasses from metal alkoxide has been done concerning gelling of silicon alkoxides and dehydration of those gells. The felling time were increased with increasing of Carbon number of alkyl radical of alkoxide and am-ount of water and the lower pH value of water. Large portions of water and organic materials were rem-oved below 25$0^{\circ}C$ and shrinkage of glass took place above 80$0^{\circ}C$ Therefore heating up to 25$0^{\circ}C$ and above 75$0^{\circ}C$ must be done gradually with rate of 0.5$^{\circ}C$/min.
