  • The amount of information we can obtain from the m is enormous. However, the users are often confused with search results due to irrelevant information, misinformation, insufficient information, etc. This paper proposes a metadata management system trying to facilitate obtaining right information on the Web. Elements of the metadata for Web coursewares are selected and their relationships are identified in order to organize them in a relational database. Procedures to obtain the metadata are implemented in the Microsoft ASP(Active Server Pages). The system provides user-friendly interfaces to give essential information on the Web coursewares and to handle users' enquiries correctly and efficiently.

  • Data warehouse (DW) is important for analytical processing. Metadata is a key to its architecture. This paper proposes an architecture that consists of seven components. To illustrate data warehouse environment (DWE), this Paper proposes taxonomies having four flows. on the basis or the taxonomies and metadata, this paper proposes a methodology for building the data warehouse and metadata simultaneously. This integrated development methodology (IDM) consists of seven phases: (i) preparatory phase, (ii) requirement analysis phase, (iii) data warehouse development phase, (iv) operational data store development phase, (v) data mart development phase, (vi) metastore development phase, and (vii) maintenance phase. A metastore system is Proposed to help develop metadata interactively. An illustrative example is investigated to demonstrate the usefulness of IDM.

  • The Internet has gained popularity because it provides various information in digital format. However, it is very difficult to provide methods which make it possible to search adequate information resource from bulk of Internet information. In this paper, we define a SGML metadata DTD, named SeriCore, and design and implement a metadata retrieval and management system which can store, retrieve and manage the Internet metadata efficiently.

  • The preservation metadata which is defined the property and history of changes must be describes logically and structurally for implementing long-term digital preservation. The preservation metadata makes the users to access and retrieve authentic digital resources and the managers of digital archives to manage and preserve more effectively the digital resources. his paper is review of recent developments relating to digital preservation metadata including the taxonomy of information object classes of Reference Model of OAIS and outlines some library-based projects. Next, the paper investigates how to develop and use the preservation metadata in university libraries and what is the core preservation metadata elements. Finally, the paper recommends the set of preservation metadata elements with broad applicability to digital preservation in university libraries.

  • With development of information technology that allows bidirectional exchange and access of information made possible the formation of e-Government. The e-Government and the E-Government Act established for its support provides a tool for online access of government information. This brought on many changes in the recordkeeping environment of public institutions, and also guarantees access of government information by the general public. The active disclosure of government information was re-confirmed through the Freedom of Information act that was amended in 2004, and through its contents that offer guidelines for administrative information disclosure and announcements (Prime Minister Orders No.422) As a result of this effort, Ministry of Culture and Tourism Cultural Heritage Administration provide real time update of their homepages with focus on key organizational policies and records. Such changes are expected to other various public organizations. In order for public organizations to accurately and efficiently provide information sources, and in order to provide the public with easy access to such information, development of public infrastructure along with e-Government metadata are necessary. Korea does not yet have e-government metadata that has been standardized, although "GILF Core Element" has analogous functions. However, GILS Core element has been developed without recordkeeping intent, and it has not been successful in establishing a connection with recordkeeping metadata. Therefore, in this study, criteria for e-government metadata are proposed.

  • Metadata IR model has high precision and low recall because the query in Metadata IR model is strict that is, the query can express user information need exactly, while Full-text IR model has low precision and high recall because the query in Full-text IR model is a kind of simple keyword query which expresses user information need roughly. If user can translate one's information need into structured query well, the retrieval result will be improved. However, it is little possible to make relevant query without understanding characteristics of metadata. Unfortunately, most users do not interested in metadata, then they cannot construct well-made structured query. Amount of information contained in metadata is less than text information. In this paper, we suggest hybrid IR model using metadata and text which can provide users with lots of relevant documents by retrieving from metadata field and text field complementarily.

  • The purpose of this study is to design metadata for management and sharing of Yeogu data produced in the ecological field. Specifically, metadata is designed based on DCAT, which is designed to facilitate interoperability between data catalogs published on the web. In addition, ABCD, Darwin Core, and EML were analyzed and applied to metadata design to reflect the characteristics of the ecological field. As a result of the research, a total of 51 metadata elements were derived for managing research data in the ecological field, and 6 essential elements, 23 recommended elements, and 22 optional elements were included. The results of this study can be used to design a DB when building a research data management and sharing system based on metadata elements, and to suggest a metadata exchange format when linking with other systems.

  • Although digitization contributes to the conservation and preservation of cultural heritage resources, detailing the necessary techniques is a lack of standardization in existing digital repositories. The purpose of this paper is to present practical strategies to illustrate technical details of imaging processes and metadata description with examples. This paper also provides important management issues related to digitization management for project managers and practitioners.

  • This paper proposes some guidelines for Korean standards for statistical metadata to share on the Internet. The construction includes the minimum metadata set needed in the international standards based on the report and Korean Statistics Office. In result, 29 categories were selected from the SDMX and SDDS’consistency items and 14 categories from Dublin Core. Overall, 43 international statistics metadata was completed.
