The Development of the Automatic Triangular Mesh Generation Software Using Modified Lo's Algorithm (수정된 Lo의 요소망 생성 알고리즘은 이용한 자동 삼각 요소망 생성 소프트웨어의 개발)

  • For last two decades numerous automatic mesh generation algorithms for various two dimensional objects have been introduced continuously and among them triangular mesh generation schemes have been majority because of efficiency and controllability. In our study, an existing triangular mesh generation algorithm developed by Lo is totally modified to more improve node distribution, element shape, and objects shape independency. ft is composed of node generation part and element generation part. In order to find a suitable node position within geometry, the suggested algorithm searches desirable positions of points within boundary and optimizes node position to generate comparatively well-shaped elements. More over, the suggested algorithm handles various complex two dimensional objects and its meshing speed shows superiority to those of the existing triangulation mesh generation algorithms. It is fully automated in a sense of constructing object boundary and hence can be directly used as an independent meshing software.

Numerical stability and parameters study of an improved bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization method

  • This paper presents a modified and improved bi-directional evolutionary structural optimization (BESO) method for topology optimization. A sensitivity filter which has been used in other optimization methods is introduced into BESO so that the design solutions become mesh-independent. To improve the convergence of the optimization process, the sensitivity number considers its historical information. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of the modified BESO method in obtaining convergent and mesh-independent solutions. A study of the effects of various BESO parameters on the solution is then conducted to determine the appropriate values for these parameters.

  • A spot welded joint is modeled using 3-D finite elements with embedded strong discontinuities. The spot weld is represented by a special cohesive law on the embedded discontinuity surface, instead of meshing its geometry. This strategy naturally eliminates the need of adaptive FEM meshes fitting the local geometry of the spot weld. Mesh independent solutions are guaranteed by explicitly modeling the detailed shape of the spot weld, which is in contrast with the exiting approach using point constraints for the spot weld.

Computational fluid dynamics simulation for tuned liquid column dampers in horizontal motion

  • A Computational Fluid Dynamics model is presented in this study for the simulation of the complex fluid flows with free surfaces inside the Tuned Liquid Column Dampers in horizontal motion. The characteristics of the fluid model of the TLCD in horizontal motion include the free surface of the multiphase flow and the horizontal moving frame. In this study, the time depend unsteady Standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model based on Navier-Stokes equations is chosen. The volume of fluid (VOF) method and sliding mesh technique are adopted to track the free surface of water inside the vertical columns of TLCD and treat the moving boundary of the walls of TLCD in horizontal motion. Several model solution parameters comprising different time steps, mesh sizes, convergence criteria and discretization schemes are examined to establish model parametric independency results. The simulation results are compared with the experimental data in the dimensionless amplitude of the water column in four different configured groups of TLCDs with four different orifice areas. The predicted natural frequencies and the head loss coefficient of TLCDs from CFD model are also compared with the experimental data. The predicted numerical results agree well with the available experimental data.

  • Numerical simulations of two-dimensional steady incompressible lid-driven flow in a square cavity are presented by a new solution code(PowerCFD) which adopts an unstructured cell-centered method. Solutions are obtained for configurations with a Reynolds number as high as 10,000 with both rectangular and hybrid types of unstructured grid mesh in order to validate the code's independency of grid type. Interesting features of the flow are presented in detail and comparisons are made with benchmark solutions found in the literature. It is found that the code is capable of producing accurately the nature of the lid-driven cavity flow at high Reynolds numbers with no grid type dependency.

Numerical simulation of reinforced concrete nuclear containment under extreme loads

  • A finite element model for the non-linear dynamic analysis of a reinforced concrete (RC) containment shell of a nuclear power plant subjected to extreme loads such as impact and earthquake is presented in this work. The impact is modeled by using an uncoupled approach in which a load function is applied at the impact zone. The earthquake load is modeled by prescribing ground accelerations at the base of the structure. The nuclear containment is discretized spatially by using 20-node brick finite elements. The concrete in compression is modeled by using a modified $Dr{\ddot{u}}cker$-Prager elasto-plastic constitutive law where strain rate effects are considered. Cracking of concrete is modeled by using a smeared cracking approach where the tension-stiffening effect is included via a strain-softening rule. A model based on fracture mechanics, using the concept of constant fracture energy release, is used to relate the strain softening effect to the element size in order to guaranty mesh independency in the numerical prediction. The reinforcing bars are represented by incorporated membrane elements with a von Mises elasto-plastic law. Two benchmarks are used to verify the numerical implementation of the present model. Results are presented graphically in terms of displacement histories and cracking patterns. Finally, the influence of the shear transfer model used for cracked concrete as well as the effect due to a base slab incorporation in the numerical modeling are analyzed.

Automation of Fatigue Durability Analysis for Welded Bogie Frame Using a Multi-Agent Based Engineering Framework (멀티 에이전트 기반 엔지니어링 프레임워크를 이용한 용접대차틀 피로내구해석의 자동화)

  • A multi-agent and web based engineering framework concerning the automation of fatigue durability analysis for welded bogie frame of railway vehicles is presented. Mostly, this kind of design or analysis includes complex workflow, huge amounts of information processing, and problem solving. Macro programs of I-DEAS, APDL of ANSYS, and in-house fatigue code are utilized for parametric geometry representation, automatic mesh generation, static stress analysis, fatigue durability analysis, post-processing, and data sorting. The engineering framework is implemented on the JADE. Since every task requires a fairly complex process and specialized knowledge, the multi-agent based framework is very useful to keep the independency among several disciplines or tasks and to use distributed hardware and software resources. All engineering programs are integrated by XML wrapper. Related database of the engineering framework and web based user interfaces are also developed. A parametric study is carried out to take into account the effect of geometrical change of transom support bracket on its cumulative fatigue damage. The developed engineering framework reduced remarkably the time and costs required in designing and solving engineering problems.
