In order to improve polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) durability, the durability of membrane electrode assemblies (MEA), in which the electrochemical reactions actually occur, is one of the vital issues. Many articles have dealt with catalyst layer degradation of the durability-related factors on MEAs in relation to loss of catalyst surface area caused by agglomeration, dissolution, migration, formation of metal complexes and oxides, and/or instability of the carbon support. Degradation of catalyst layer during long-term operation includes cracking or delamination of the layer which result either from change in the catalyst microstructure or loss of electronic or ionic contact with the active surface, can result in apparent activity loss in the catalyst layer. Membrane degradation of the durability-related factors on MEAs can be caused by mechanical or thermal stress resulting in formation of pinholes and tears and/or by chemical attack of hydrogen peroxide radicals formed during the electrochemical reactions. All of these effects, the mechanical damage of membrane and degradation of catalyst layers are more facilitated by uneven stress or improper MEA fabrication process. In order to improve the PEMFC durability, therefore, it is most important to minimize the uneven stress or improper MEA fabrication process in the course of the fabrication of MEA. We analyzed the effects of the MEA fabrication condition on the PEMFC durability with MEA produced using CCM (catalyst coated membrane) method. This paper also investigated the effects of MEA fabrication condition on the PEMFC durability by adding additional treatment process, hot pressing and pressing, on the MEA produced using CCM method.
In this work, oil-in-water emulsions (O/W) were prepared successfully by membrane emulsification with $0.5{\mu}m$ pore size membrane. Sunflower oil was emulsified in aqueous Tween80 solution with a simple crossflow apparatus equipped with ceramic tube membrane. In order to increase the shear-stress near the membrane wall, a helical-shaped reducer was installed within the lumen side of the tube membrane. This method allows the reduction of continuous phase flow and the increase of dispersed phase flux, for cost effective production. Results were compared with the conventional cross-flow membrane emulsification method. Monodisperse O/W emulsions were obtained using tubular membrane with droplet size in the range $3.3-4.6{\mu}m$ corresponded to the membrane pore diameter of $0.5{\mu}m$. The final aim of this study is to obtain O/W emulsions by simple membrane emulsification method without reducer and compare the results obtained by membrane equipped with helix shaped reducer. To indicate the results statistical methods, $3^p$ type full factorial experimental designs were evaluated, using software called STATISTICA. For prediction of the flux, droplet size and PDI a mathematical model was set up which can describe well the dependent variables in the studied range, namely the run of the flux and the mean droplet diameter and the effects of operating parameters. The results suggested that polynomial model is adequate for representation of selected responses.
This paper presents an efficient membrane finite element for the cyclic inelastic response analysis of RC structures under complex plane stress states including shear. The model strikes a balance between accuracy and numerical efficiency to meet the challenge of shear wall simulations in earthquake engineering practice. The concrete material model at the integration points of the finite element is based on damage plasticity with two damage parameters. All reinforcing bars with the same orientation are represented by an embedded orthotropic steel layer based on uniaxial stress-strain relation, so that the dowel and bond-slip effect of the reinforcing steel are presently neglected in the interest of computational efficiency. The model is validated with significant experimental results of the cyclic response of RC panels with uniform stress states.

This paper presents a unique pressure sensor design for environmental applications. The design uses a new geometry for a multi bossed beam-membrane structure with a SOI (silicon-on-insulator) substrate and a mechanical transducer. The Intellisuite MEMS CAD design tool was used to build and analyze the structure with FEM (finite element modeling). The working principle of the multi bossed beam structure is explained. FEM calculations show that a sensing diaphragm with Mises stress can provide superior linear response compared to a stress-free diaphragm. These simulation results are validated by comparing the estimated deflection response. The results show that, the sensitivity is enhanced by using both the novel geometry and the SOI substrate.
The object of this study is shape finding and cutting pattern generation of membrane structures under the following assumptions : (1) material is linearly elastic (2) stress state is plane stress. Cable and membrane structures should introduce the nonlinear analysis considering geometric nonlinearity because these structures deform largely under the external loads. The analysis procedure is consisted of three steps considering geometric nonlinearity unlike any other structures. First step is the shape finding analysis to determine the initial equilibrium shape. Second step is the stress-deformation analysis to investigate the behaviors of structures under various external loads. Once a satisfactory shape has been found, a cutting pattern based on the shape finding analysis may be generated from the view point of construction. In this paper, (1) shape finding analysis formulation and an example, (2) cutting pattern determination procedure using weighted least-square minimization flattening method and some results are presented.
Waterborne PU membrane was prepared from waterborne PU dispersion solution to investigate physical and staining properties. The staining properties of waterborne PU membrane with acid dyes and disperse dyes were observed. The physical properties of the PU membrane were investigated by X-ray diffraction and IR spectroscopy. The staining property of waterborne PU membrane for azo acid dyes is better than that of disperse dyes. X-ray diffraction peaks sharpened and tensile strain and stress increased with heat setting temperature.
This study was designed to investigate the effects of silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) powder on oxidative stress and membrane fluidity in liver membranes of rats. Sprague-Dawley (SD) male rats (160±10 g) were fed basic diet (control group), and experimental diets (SWP-200 and SWP-400 groups) added 200 and 400 mg/kg BW/day for 6 weeks. A significant differences between liver mitochondria and microsomes of SWP-200 and SWP-400 groups could not be obtained. Membrane fluidities were dose-dependently increased (14.8% and 28.5%, 20.0% and 29.9%) in liver mitochondria and microsomes of SWP-200 and SWP-400 groups compared with control group. Basal oxygen radicals (BOR) in liver mitochondria and mocrosomes were significantly inhibited (15.2% and 21.7%, 12.6% and 18.6%, respectively) by SWP-200 and SWP-400 groups compared with control group. Induced oxygen radicals (IOR) in liver microsomes were significantly inhibited (15.5% and 16.1%, respectively) by SWP-200 and SWP-400 groups compared with control group, but IOR in liver mitochondria was significantly inhibited about 12.0% by SWP-400 group only compared with control group. Lipid peroxide (LPO) levels were significantly decreased (14.4% and 9.1%, respectively) in liver mitochondria and microsomes of SWP-400 group only compared with control group. Oxidized protein (OP) levels were remarkably decreased about 12.7% and 16.3% in liver microsomes only of SWP-200 and SWP-400 groups, but significant difference between liver motochondria could not obtained. These results suggest that administration of SWP may play an effective role in a attenuating a oxidative stress and increasing a membrane fluidity in liver membranes.

Sprague-Dawley (SD) male rats (160$\pm$10 g) were fed basic diet (control group), and experimental diets (SFP-2.5 and SFP-5.0 groups) added 2.5 and 5.0 g/kg BW/day for 6 weeks. Cholesterol level was significantly decreased about 8.0% in brain microsomes of SFP-5.0 group only compared with control group. Membrane fluidities were significantly increased (12.9% and 15.2%, respectively) in brain microsomes of SFP-2.5 and SFP-5.0 groups, but significant difference between in brain mitochondria of these two groups could be not obtained. Basal oxygen radicals (BOR) in brain mitochondria and microsomes were significantly ingibited (10.4%, and 24.0%, 7.9% and 14.9%, respectively) by SFP-2.5 and SFP-5.0 groups compared with control group. Induced oxygen radicals (IOR) in brain mitochondria and microsomes were significantly inhibited (11.8% and 14.1%, respectively) by SFP-5.0 groups compared with control group compared with control group. Lipid peroxide (LPO) levels were dose-dependently decreased (12.9% and 21.9%, 13.2% and 22.5%, respectively) in brain mitochondria and microsomes of SFP-2.5 and SFP-5.0 groups compared with control group. Oxidized protein (OP) levels were significantly decreased (15.7% and 17.1%, 16.7% and 15.7%, respectively) in brain mitochondria and microsomes of SFP-2.5 and SFP-2.5 and SFP-5.0 groups compared with control group. These results suggest that administration of SFP may play an effective role in a attenuating a oxidative stress and increasing a membrane fluidity in brain membranes.
