The numerical investigation of obliquely incident wave interactions with fully submerged dual buoy/porous-membrane floating breakwaters placed in parallel with spacing is studied based on linear potential theory and Darcy's law. The numerical solutions are obtained by using a discrete-membrane dynamic model and second-kind modified Bessel function distribution over the entire boundaries of fluid regions. First, numerical solutions for an idealized dual submerged system without buoys are obtained. Second, a more practical dual submerged system with membrane tension provided by buoys at its tops is investigated by the multi-domain boundary element method particularly devised for dual buoy/porous-membrane problems with gaps. The velocity potentials of wave motion are coupled with porous-membrane deformation, and solved simultaneously since the boundary condition on porous-membrane is not known in advance. The effects of varying permeability on membranes and wave characteristics are discussed for the optimum design parameters of systems previously studied. The inclusion of permeability on membrane eliminates the resonances that aggravate the breakwater performance. The system is highly efficient when waves generated by the buoys and membranes were mutually canceled and its energy at resonance frequency dissipates through fine pores on membranes.
A new simple 3-node triangular flat-shell element with standard nodal DOF (6 DOF per node) is proposed for the linear and geometrically nonlinear analysis of very thin to thick plate and shell structures. The formulation of element GT9 (Long and Xu 1994), a generalized conforming membrane element with rigid rotational freedoms, is employed as the membrane component of the new shell element. Both one-point reduced integration scheme and a corresponding stabilization matrix are adopted for avoiding membrane locking and hourglass phenomenon. The bending component of the new element comes from a new generalized conforming Kirchhoff-Mindlin plate element TSL-T9, which is derived in this paper based on semiLoof constrains and rational shear interpolation. Thus the convergence can be guaranteed and no shear locking will happen. Furthermore, a simple hybrid procedure is suggested to improve the stress solutions, and the Updated Lagrangian formulae are also established for the geometrically nonlinear problems. Numerical results with solutions, which are solved by some other recent element models and the models in the commercial finite element software ABAQUS, are presented. They show that the proposed element, denoted as GMST18, exhibits excellent and better performance for the analysis of thin-think plates and shells in both linear and geometrically nonlinear problems.
Mathematical description of arbitrarily-shaped tool surface are introduced by parametric patch approaches along with the related contact search algorithm. In order to maintain the advantages of membrane elements and to incoporate the bending effect, a BEAM(Bending Energy Augmented Membrane) element is proposed. Computation are carried out for some complex axisymmetric multi-stage deep drawing to verify the validity and the effectiveness of the proposed method.
We suggest a linear elastic flat shell element based on the HT(hybrid Trefftz) method. We formulate the membrane part of the proposed element as an HT plane element with the drilling DOF. For the bending part, we developed a thick HT plate element that can represent transverse shear deformations accurately. Because we derive both the membrane and the bending parts consistently using the HT functional, we can easily construct the triangular and the quadrilateral elements in a unified way. In addition, warping of quadrilateral element is compensated by force and moment equilibrium equations. We evaluate the performance of the new element in terms of accuracy and convergence.

This paper introduces a new approach to consider the bending history in finite element inverse analysis of the cylindrical cup drawing. A modified membrane element is adopted to add the bending-unbending energy to the total plastic energy on the bending-unbending region predicted from the geometry of the final shape and tools. The algorithm suggested was applied to a cylindrical cup deep drawing process. The blank shape and the distribution of the thickness strain are compared with those obtained from incremental finite element analysis. The comparison demonstrates the algorithm proposed reduces the difference between the results from inverse analysis and those from incremental analysis when the bending history is considered.

The objective of this study is to estimate the mechanical characteristics and nonlinear behaviors on the geometric nonlinear analysis of curved cable-membrane roof systems for long span lightweight roof structures. The weight of a cable-membrane roof dramatically can reduce, but the single layer cable-membrane roof systems are too flexible and difficult to achieve the required structural stiffness. A curved cable roof system with reverse curvature works more effectively as a load bearing system, the pretension of cables can easily increase the structural stiffness. The curved cable roof system can transmit vertical loads in up and downward direction, and work effectively as a load bearing structure to resists self-weights, snow and wind loads. The nonlinear behavior and mechanical characteristics of a cable roof system has greatly an affect by the sag and pretension. This paper is carried out analyzing and comparing the tensile forces and deflection of curved roof systems by vertical loads. The elements for analysis uses a tension only cable element and a triangular membrane element with 3 degree of freedom in each node. The authors will show that the curved cable-membrane roof system with reverse curvature is a very lightweight and small deformation roof for external loads.
The paper is concerned with an improved scheme for application of the blank holding force in order to take account of the thickness distribution in the sheet material of the flange region. The scheme incorporates with a modified membrane finite element method for planar anisotropic materials. The new scheme proposed two coefficients α and βto calculate the compressive stress in the sheet metal due to the blank holding force, which should be determined properly for accurate analysis. The effect of αand βon the blank holding force distribution and the deformed shape is investigated with simulation of rectangular cup deep drawing processes by changing parameter values.

Cochlea is well known to have the ability to analyze a wide frequency and this ability seems to be caused to the Basilar Membrane(BM) configuration. However, the relationship between the Cochlea frequency-position map is not clear. In this paper, the three-dimensional BM Model was made using the Finite Element method. Then, an attempt was made to examine the influence of the BM configuration on the Cochlea frequency-position map. Theoretical consideration reveals that the wide frequency-position of Cochlea is achieved by not only the BM configuration change along the length of the Cochlea but also the change of the Young's module of the BM along the length of the Cochlea.

Non-conforming membrane elements which have variable number of mid-side nodes with drilling degrees of freedom and which is designated as NMDx have been presented in this paper. The non-conforming elements with variable number of mid-side nodes can be efficiently used in the local mesh refinement for the in-plane structures. To guarantee the developed elements always pass the patch test, the direct modification method is incorporated into the element formulation. Detailed numerical tests in this study show the validity of the variable node NC elements developed in this study and a wide applicability of these elements to practical problems.
