  • In recent years, an increasing interest in membrane technology has been observed in chemical and environmental industry. Membrane technology has advantages of low cost, energy saving and environmental clean technology comparing to conventional separation processes. Pervaporation is one of new advanced membrane technology applied for separation of azeotropic mixtures, aqueous organic mixtures, organic solvent and petrochemical mixtures. Sodium alginate composite membranes were prepared for the enhancement of long-term stability of pervaporation performance of water-ethanol mixture using pervaporation. Sodium alginate membranes were crosslinked with CaCl$_2$ and coated with polyelectrolyte chitosan to protect washing out of calcium ions from the polymer. The surface structures of PAN and hydrolysed PAN membrane were confirmed by ATR Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). A field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM; Jeol 6340F) operated at 15 kV. Concentration profiles for Ca in the membrane surface and membrane cross-section were taken by an energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyser (Jeol) attached to the field emission scanning electron microscopy (Jeol 6340F). Pervaporation experiments were done with several operation run times to investigate long-term stability of the membranes.

  • This paper describes the preliminary study on the development of multi-stage membrane demonstration plant for removal of carbon dioxide from flue gas stream being emitted from LNG boiler in thermal power generation plant. The prerequisite requirement is to design and develop the membrane process producing a $99\%\;CO_2$ with $90\%$ recovery from LNG flue gas of 1,000 $Nm^3$/day. Asymmetric polyethersulfone hollow fiber membranes and membrane modules developed in this laboratory[1] were used in this study. Using the permeation data for the hollow fiber membranes, modelling on the membrane module and multi-stage membrane process was done to meet the requirement condition of the process design. The effects of the operating pressure of feed and permeate side and feed concentration on $CO_2$ purity and recovery were investigated experimentally with the developed hollow fiber modules. These experimental results matched well with theoretical modelling results.

  • Whole-cell attachment by covalent linkage, thereby simulating natural and specific attachments, improves the osmotolerance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells. The enhanced osmoresistance is correlated with a decrease in the intercellular concentration of trehalose and accompanied by membrane compositional changed. The results obtained indicate that yeast cell-support (physical) contact is sensed and responded to.

  • Many physiological processes of plant cells, such as nutrient uptake, salt tolerance, and cell enlargement, are mediated by ion transports across the plasma membrane. H$^{+}$-ATPases on both plasma and vacuolar membranes play major roles on active transports and ion channels mediate passive transports of various ions. It has been known that these proteins involved in cellular osmotic regulation and salt tolerance in the salt-accumulated soils.(omitted)

  • A major lipid-signaling pathway in mammalian cells implicated the activation of sphingomyelinase (SMase), which hydrolyses sphingomyeline to generate ceramide and phosphocholine. Sphingomyelinase is divided into many isoform groups dependent on optimal pH, and essential cation especially magnesium in their activation. Such as acidic sphingomyelinase, neutral sphingomyelinase and alkaline sphingomyelinase. Ceramide is known as a crucial second messenger in cell responses like cell proliferation. cell cycle arrest. cellular senescence, and apoptosis. (omitted)

  • Phospholipase A$_2$(PLA$_2$) catalyzes the hydrolysis of the sn-2 position of membrane glycerophospholipids to liberate arachidonic acid(AA), a precursor of eicosanoids including prostaglandins(PGs) and leukotrienes (LTs). The same reaction also produces lyso-phospholipids. So far, at least 19 enzymes that possess PLA2 activity have been identified, consists of low-molecular-weight, Ca$\^$2+/-requiring, secretory enzymes that have been implicated in a number of biological processes, such as modification of eicosanoid generation, inflammation, host defense, and atherosclerosis. • We developed a miniaturized solid-state carbonate ion-selective electrode (carbonate ISE) based on one-component room temperature vulcanizing type silicone rubber 730 (730 RTV) without adding plasticizer to the matrix. The optimized carbonate ion selective membrane is prepared with 85.8 wt% of 730 RTV, 11.1 wt% of trifluoroacetyl-p-decylbenzene (TFADB), and 3.1 wt% of tridodecyl-methylammonium chloride (TDMACl). This carbonate ISE exhibited excellent potentiometric properties (i.e., slope: 26.3 mV/dec; selectivity: $logKT^{pot}_{CO_{2},Cl^-}$= -4.00 and $logKT^{pot}_{TCO_{2},Sal^-}$=1.69); and detection limit for $TCO_2:\;4.0{\times}10^{-4}M$). In addition, the early potentiometric properties of the solid-state sensor with optimized membrane composition were not deteriorated for more than 60 days.

  • Portable-type two electrode system for the determination of highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide (10-75%) has been studied. The electrode body was made with teflon rod (length=10 cm, diameter=1.5 cm) to withstand the highly corrosive power of hydrogen peroxide. Glass carbon rod (diameter=3 mm) was used as the working electrode and a carbon cylinder (i.d.=5 mm; o.d.=9 mm) was used as counter electrode. The applied voltage for the determination of $H_2O_2$ was 0.8 V. Diluting the highly concentrated samples taken from the industrial batch to 10% or less, it was possible to make quantitative determinations, while eliminating the interference from the stabilizer contained in the sample and preventing the surface of the electrode from oxidative corrosion. Employing hydrogen peroxide permeable membrane (teflon membrane${\leq}100{\mu}m$) for the electrode system, it was possible to measure the content of $H_2O_2$ in highly concentrated samples directly, quantitatively and reproducibly with no extra dilution step. However, it was necessary to change the internal electrolyte frequently to maintain the analytical performance of the electrode.

  • Tolaasin, peptide toxin produced by Pseudomonas tolaasii, causes a brown blotch disease on the cultivated mushrooms. Tolaasin peptides form membrane pores and disrupt cellular membrane structure. Molecular actions of tolaasin consist of the aggregation of peptide molecules, binding to the cell membrane, and formation of membrane pores. Therefore, the inhibitions of any of these actions are able to suppress the blotch disease. We have isolated and identified several tolaasin inhibitors (named tolaasin inhibitory factors, TIF) from food additives. TIFs were able to suppress the blotch-formation by the pathogen inoculated to the mushrooms. In this study, TIFs were incubated under various conditions and their activities for the inhibition of tolaasin-induced hemolytic activity were investigated. Since TIFs are unsaturated carbon compounds, they were sensitive to the air exposure and light irradiation. In the anaerobic conditions, TIFs were stable and their activities were decreased by 10% for three months. However, near 90% of TIF activity was suppressed by two weeks in the presence of air and sun light. Temperature did not show any significant effects on the activity of TIF, since storages at 5, 25, $45^{\circ}C$ did not show any difference. Therefore, for the stable storage of TIF compounds, container should be designed to be dark and air-tight.

  • The preferential transport phenomena of neutral cation-anion moieties in neutral macrocycle-facilitated emulsion liquid membrane were described in this study. Emulsion membrane systems consisting of (1) aqueous source phase containing 0.001M $M(NO_3)_2$ (M = $Mn^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Sr^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$) (2) a toluene membrane containing 0.02M ligand (DB$N_3O_2$, DB18C6) and the surfactant span 80 (sorbitan mono oleate) (3% v/v) and (3) aqueous receiving phase containing $Na_2S_2O_3$ or $NaNO_3$ were studied with respect to the disappearence of metal ions from the source phase as a function of time. Cation transport rates for various two component equimolar mixture of metal ions were determinded. $Cd^{2+}$ was transported higher rates than the other $M^{2+}$ in the mixture solution.
