  • Tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) was used as carrier for the transport of Golden yellow and Cibacron LSG dyes through a hexane bulk liquid membrane. The transport efficiency of dyes by TBP was investigated under various experimental conditions such as pH of the feed phase (dyes solution), concentration of the receiving phase (NaOH solution), concentration of TBP in membrane, rate of stirring, effect of transport time, type of solvent, dye concentration in feed phase, effect of temperature.. The maximum transport dyes occurs at ratio of 1:1 TBP-hexane At pH 3.0 0.1 (feed phase) the transport dyes decreased. At high stirring speed (300 rpm) the dyes transport from the feed phase to the strip phase was completed within 60 minutes at $27^{\circ}C$. Under optimum conditions: Feed phase 100 mg/L dyes solution at pH 1.0 0.1, receiving phase 0.1 mol/L NaOH solution, membrane phase 1:1 TBP-hexane , Stirring speed 300 rpm and temperature $27^{\circ}C$, the proposed liquid membrane was applied to recover the textile effluent.

  • Fuel cells are seen as eco-friendly energy resources that convert chemical energy into electrical energy. However, proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have problems such as the use of expensive platinum catalysts for the reduction of conductivity under high temperature humidification conditions. Thus, an anion exchange membrane fuel cell (AEMFC) is attracting a great attention. Anion exchange fuel cells use non - Pt catalysts and have the advantage of better efficiency because of the lower activation energy of the oxygen reduction reaction. However, there are various problems to be solved including problems such as the electrode damage and reduction of ion conductivity by being exposed to the carbon dioxide. Therefore, this mini review proposes various solutions for different problems of anion exchange fuel cells through a wide range of research papers.

  • The poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/Ag Nanoparticles (NPs)/7,7,8,8-Tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) membrane was fabricated to obtain highly permeable facilitated olefin transport nanocomposite membrane, compared with PEO/Ag NPs/p-Benzoquinone (p-BQ) membrane. Polymer matrix, PEO and silver nanoparticle precursor $AgBF_4$ were fixed at 1 : 0.4 mole ratio and electron acceptor TCNQ content was controlled variously. And the best olefin separation performance was obtained at 1/0.4/0.004 mole ratio, and long-term separation performance was measured at this ratio. As a result, mixed-gas permeance decreased from 23 to 6 GPU, and selectivity decreased from 6 to 2 (propylene/propane) after 32 hours.

  • A manufacturing method has been devised to prepare novel heterogeneous cation exchange membranes by mixing ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers with a commercial cation exchange resin. Optimum material characteristics, mixture ratios and manufacturing conditions have been worked out for achieving favorable membrane performance. Ion exchange capacity, electrical resistance, water uptake, swelling ratio and tensile strength properties were measured. SEM analysis was used to monitor morphology. Effects of vinyl acetate (VA) content, melt index (MI) and ion exchange resin content on properties of heterogeneous cation exchange membranes have been discussed. An application test was carried out by mounting a selected membrane in a membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) system to investigate its desalination capability. 0.92 meq/g of ion exchange capacity, $8.7{\Omega}.cm^2$ of electrical resistance, $40kgf/cm^2$ of tensile strength, 19% of swelling ratio, 42% of water uptake, and 56.4% salt removal rate were achieved at best. VA content plays a leading role on the extent of physical properties and performance; however, MI is important for having uniform distribution of resin grains and achieving better ionic conductivity. Overall, manufacturing cost has been suppressed to 5-10% of that of homogeneous ion exchange membranes.

  • The surface of an ${\alpha}$-alumina tube was coated with zirconium modified polycarbosilane(PZC) by dip-coating method. Then the tube was pyrolyzed at 573~823 K. The prepared inorganic composite membrane was in $1{\mu}m$ thickness and had no pinholes larger than several nm. For the pyrolyzed inorganic composite membrane, the permeation test of He, $N_2$, $CO_2$, and $O_2$ was performed at 303~423 K. The gas permeation and separation factor were increased with increasing permeation temperature. The permeation for gases was controlled by the activated diffusion mechanism. The separation factor of $CO_2$, to $N_2$was 4.9 at 363 K on the composite membrane pyrolyzed at 823 K and its value was higher than that of He and $O_2$.

  • Polyamide membrane degradation by chlorine has been studied to improve membrane durability. In this study, it was found that the salt rejection was reduced rapidly and flux of the membrane was increased slowly far membrane treated under chlorine condition. In order to improve resistance to chlorine of the polyamide reverse osmosis membrane, fluorine-containing silane coupling agent (FSCA) was introduced to surface modification. Surface properties and chlorine resistance of silane modified membrane were compared with virgin membrane. It was found that the surface of silane modified membrane has dense structure according to FSCA concentration increasing. The results of surface analysis suggest that FSCA retrieved a severe change in the hydrophobicity and surface roughness. In addition, it appears that FSCA can enhance chlorine resistance due to the interaction of such substance with free radical chlorine.

  • Agilent 5973 GC-MS instrument was modified so that the capillary direct interface was removed and that a silicone membrane was installed between GC and MS. Feasibility study of the membrane interface GC-MS has been carried out. Vacuum of the mass spectrometer was not affected by the carrier gas flow rate up to $4.7m{\ell}/min$. As the carrier flow rate was increased, peak tailing was reduced and chromatogram peaks appeared earlier. Chromatogram peaks showed better separation and higher sensitivity as the membrane thickness was reduced from $127{\mu}m$ to $75{\mu}m$, and also as the interface temperature was increased. However, the membrane interface GC-MS had drawbacks such as background ions at 73 and 147 m/z and poor peak separation due to peak tailing.

  • Chitin, which is obtained mainly from the cuticle of a marine crustacean, has recently aroused great interest in its industrial and biomedical applications. Chitosan, deacetylated form of chitin, appears to be more useful for biomedical application and dehydration of aqueous solutions than chitin, since it has both hydroxyl and amino groups that can be modified easily. Amino groups on chitosan reacts with dialdehyde to form a Schiff base and then crosslinked, and can be easily neutralized with sulfuric acid and metal ions. Polyfunctional metal ions can form a metal-polyelectrolyte complexes with chitosan. Membranes used in modules so far working in industrial pervaporation plants are generally of composite type. This composite membrane was prepared by coating a porous polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane support of definite structure with a thin, dense layer of permselective chitosan. To apply industrial scale pervaporation process for dehydration of aqueous ethanol and isopropanol, chitosan composite membranes were prepared and tested at various conditions.
