Characterizations of Membrane for Water Treatment: Surface Charge Analysis by Electrophoresis and Acidity Measurements

  • The surface charge properties of a polymeric NF and a ceramic UF membranes were characterized in terms of zeta potential and acidity. Both the negative zeta potential and acidity values increased as pH increases due to ionizable acidic functional groups. Increased ionic strength reduced the acidity of the negatively-charged membrane surface as anticipated. Through these results, it can be envisioned are used to reject solutes with ionizable functional groups. Fouling of the negatively-charged membrane with natural organic matter (NOM) having a negative charge density was also investigated with respect to the surface charge. The surface charge of the NF membrane increased negatively when greater NOM adsorption onto the membrane surface occured.

Evaluation of the Effective Charge Density on Low Pressure Nanofiltration with the Separation Characteristics of Monovalent and Divalent Solutes in the Production of Drinking Water

  • The electric charge on a membrane was investigated by analyzing the experimental rejection of various monovalent and divalent ionic solutes. The characteristics of the separation of ionic solutes using various nanofiltration membranes were obtained from an experimental nanofiltration set-up, with a surface area of $40cm^2$ under the operational pressures between 0.25-0.3 MPa. The state of the membrane electric charge was observed using separation coefficients, i.e., the permeation ratio of monovalent to divalent ions. To confirm the state of the membrane charge observed via the separation coefficient, a calculation using the extended Nernst-Planck equation, coupled with the Donnan equilibrium, assuming different electric charge states of the membrane, was compared with the experimental rejection of ionic solutes. The examination of the characteristics of separation using three types of nanofiltration membranes showed that one of the membranes carried a negative/positive double charge density inside, while other two membranes carried either a positive or negative charge density.

  • It is well known as the role of ion exchange membrane with functional group in membrane matrix. Recently, we were reported that the charged mosaic membrane within parallel array of negative and positive charge groups. In this study we are reported the properties for the various transport coefficients of metal and heavy metal ions across charged mosaic membrane based on non-equilibrium thermodynamics is not based on equilibrium state.

  • Sulfonated Polyetherimide 막은 pore 형성을 위한 polyvinylpyrrolidone 과 저비점 용매 dichloromethane을 첨가하여 투과성능을 최적할 수 있었다. SPEL 막의 친수성은 단백질등의 투과시 모든 pH 범위에서 막 오염을 효과적으로 억제할 수 있으며, 도입된 sulfonic acid group의 음이온성으로 인하여 동일한 전하의 용질을 쉽게 분리할 수 있었다.

Nanofiltration of Electrolytes with Charged Composite Membranes

  • A characterization of the permeation and separation using single salt solution was carried out with charged composite membranes. Various charged composite membranes were fabricated by blending an ionic polymer with a nonionic polymer in different ratios. In this study, sodium alginate, chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) were employed as anionic, cationic and nonionic polymers, respectively. The permeation and separation behaviors of the aqueous salt solutions have been investigated through the charged composite membranes with various charge densities. As the content of the ionic polymer increased in the membrane, the hydrophilicity of the membrane increased, and pure water flux and the solution flux increased correspondingly, indicating that the permeation performance through the membrane is determined mainly by its hydrophilicity. Electrostatic interaction between the charged membrane and ionic solute molecules, that is, Donnan exclusion, was observed to be attributed to salt rejection to a greater extent, and molecular sieve mechanism was effective for the separation of salts under a similar electrostatic circumstance of solutes.

  • 본 연구는 복합 박막 활성층의전기적/분자 구조적인 특성이 오염성에 어떤 영향을 미치는가를 조사하였다. 복합 박막 형태의 폴리아미드계 역삼투 분리막에 대한 오염 거동 현상을 이해하는데 있어 표면 구조와 표면 전하의 연구는 매우 효과적이다. AFM 전자현미경을 이용한 표면 구조 분석과 EKA 전위차 측정기를 통한 표면 전하의 분석 결과는 역삼투 분리막의 오염에 영향을 미치는 중요한 인자를 보여주고 있다. 복합막의 활성층이 중성에 가까울수록, 조도 차가 작을수록 역삼투막의 유량 감소 속도는 줄어든다.

  • 본 연구는 소수성 고분자재료인 PSf와 양이온성화된 AMPS막을 제조하여 이의 투과특성에 관하여 조사하였다. AMPS분리막은 소수성인 PSf막에 비하여 fouling이 감소하였다. 특히, AMPS막은 양이온성을 띠고 있어 염기성 염료, 단백질, 아미노산과 같이 막표면과 동일한 전하를 가지고 있는 용질을 효과적으로 분리할 수 있다.

바나듐 레독스-흐름 전지용 격막에 관한 연구 (Study on a Separator for the All-vanadium Redox Flow Battery)

  • 바나듐 레독스-흐름 전지용 격막으로 사용하기 위해 폴리설폰(Psf)에 폴리페닐렌설파이드설폰(PPSS)을 블록 공중합 시킨 폴리머를 사용하여 양이온교환막을 제작하여, 막 특성을 평가하였다. 제작한 양이온교환막은 Nafion117보다 열적 안정성이 뛰어나다는 것을 TG분석을 통해 알 수 있었고, 1몰 황산용액에서의 막 저항은 3 cc의 CSA를 도입하였을 때 $0.96{\Omeg}{\cdot}cm^2$로 제일 작은 저항 값을 나타냈다. 제작한 양이온교환막의 바나듐 레독스-흐름 전지에서의 전기화학적 특성에 대해 평가하였다. 제작한 양이온교환막을 사용한 바나듐 레독스-흐름 전지의 100% 충전상태에서의 기전력은 바나듐 레독스-흐름 전지의 기전력 값인 1.4V를 나타냈으며, 각 충전상태에서의 충 방전 셀 저항은 Nafion117을 사용한 전지의 값보다 작은 값을 나타냈다.

Polycarprolactone Ultrafine Fiber Membrane Fabricated Using a Charge-reduced Electrohydrodynamic Process

  • This paper introduces a modified electro spinning system for biomedical wound-healing applications. The conventional electrospinning process requires a grounded electrode on which highly charged electro spun ultrafine fibers are deposited. Biomedical wound-healing membranes, however, require a very low charge and a low level of remnant solvent on the electrospun membrane, which the conventional process cannot provide. An electrohydrodynamic process complemented with field-controllable electrodes (an auxiliary electrode and guiding electrodes) and an air blowing system was used to produce a membrane, with a considerably reduced charge and low remnant solvent concentration compared to one fabricated using the conventional method. The membrane had a small average pore size (102 nm) and high porosity (85.1%) for prevention of bacterial contamination. In vivo tests on rats showed that these directly electro spun fibrous membranes produced using the modified electro spinning process supported the good healing of skin bums.
